I was following this game for over 6 months trying to get into beta and live the life of a pirate, but now that I got it, I am DISAPPOINTED!! Basically, the ship combat system is repetative, tedious (limiting cannon balls is lame) and the missions are almost without reward! Economy is decent in concept, but it is going to be rediculous (cow costs 1 million gold, new ship 3000) due to the risk/reward/sacrifice to get items. Avatar combat is a joke, surely looks like it was made in a week, and it is so repetitive that I often forget what quest I am doing. Missions are all the EXACT same, just in different locations. Open world sailing is overly long, underly realistic, mostly an open are for unrestricted gankage by npc's and players alike. All in all, this is the worst game I have ever beta-tested, and is in the running for the worst mmo I have played int he last 2 years! Considering I am a beta-lover, that is harsh but true words. I had some friends over, and some brews in the fridge to make a long weekend of the game, but we were done in less than 6 hours.... all of us hated it. Elite poster by 82 |

Agree go play wow, wait i play wow, dam.
Anyway thsi game is in open beta and its a fun game , it sucks if everything you do is about e-peens such as swords etc. Basiclly, like the OP compensating with an e-peen fools no one , anyway . This game is not as good as i had hope it would be but i still enjoy it. considering the lack of good mmo's out there right now i have to say you are out of your mind with that review. I have been playing this beta for a week and have been having a blast doing so. The ship battles are extremely fun and if you read the story lines you will see that all the quests have something different going on. Just my opinion. |

Fairly accurate review. I gave up on it after 1 evening as well. Maybe in a year or so, it'll improve. Maybe not. |

Originally posted by smitty0356 Dude, I respect your opinion. But I disagree with you on all your points. POTBS is fun. It is a great change from sauturated MMO market of fantasy and sci-fi games. It has historical locations, themes, battles and more. You can have a first, middle and last name. The econmy is 99% soley player driven. You can change the way your avatar looks any time for free, rename your ship as much as you want, pvp or quest.....geez I could go on.....
And if the beta is so bad...then why do Flying Labs keep having to add more beta servers? POTBS has more beta servers than some established released games have total. |

I feel bad Vanboi'ing this but you can rename your ship and make a full name if you want and change your avatar at any time in Vanguard as well. Economy is basically the same way and boating is just a for fun or getting around activity so though I never played this game yet, your points seem trivial to a good pirate game. |

This game is way too linear, hell you can't even jump, nor can you go in water. The combat is dull and uneventful, often consisting of chasing down some pirate ship for 10 minutes to press the same cannon button over and over to kill them. The melee combat is boring. The water doesn't even look good it's either way too sharp or way too smooth. |

I can not stop to think if you forgot to mention that you think it sucks that there is alot of water in PotBS aswell... I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention. |

LOL, The OP said: "Basically, the ship combat system is repetative, tedious (limiting cannon balls is lame) and the missions are almost without reward!" And my first thought is: compared to what? I think WoW was to repatitive to play, and what kind of rewards were he expecting in a player based historical sandbox MMO? A magical wand?? |

The game's not going to appeal to everyone, nor is it meant to. Many people have found it fun, many have not. The world still turns and it's not the apocalypse.
Ship combat is done very well and when you have groups, it can be a blast trying to manuever around and get on someone's rear. It's very tactical in some respects. Avcom is pretty much so-so, and that's not going to cut it with a new game. They are working on it and only time will tell to see if they can get it as polished as the ship combat. The end-game is in question right now. What do you do when you reach the top? They are working on that as well, with missions geared toward groups, with rewards to match. They are also working on instances that you can find on the open sea that will be unique and such. As the game stands right now, you're either a fan, or you're not. If you are, then you're not really going to be dissuaded from the game as you've seen how FLS has changed it over the years and actually listened to its playerbase. They are, by far, the most communicative bunch of devs I've ever seen for a game, MMO or not. I'm willing to give the game a chance and see how it changes. I know the game is far from perfect, but for now, I'm enjoying it for the most part. If you're on the fence about the game, the beta will be opened up to everyone next week, I believe, which is just in time for the Christmas holidays. So you can check it out and decide for yourself whether you can like it or not. |

Maybe I'm the exception here but personally I have the most fun in POTBS from level 1 to 25. After that the level grind finally starts kicking in.... and I hate level grinds :) It's a fun game, and the combat does get more complex as you increase in skill/ability/level/whatever. The AVCombat sucks ass but hopefully they'll address it's sheer and utter boredom before release. Probably not but owell... it's definitely an 'afterthought' area and an obvious one at that. I love the character customization. I love the skill system, not everyone will have the same skills till much much later in life (post 50) because many folks will specialize in different areas of their profession. Quite refreshing to cookie cutter 'you are x class and will get y skill as you level' games. It's no EVE but it's not a bad little game. If I weren't playing EVE I'd probably purchase this. That said it does fall a bit into the 'sandbox' category due to the way it plays which means huge fans of WOW/EQ clones will probably not enjoy this as much as more sandbox oriented players. SWG fans should absolutely love this one if they can get past not having a lightsaber. I do think it needed to have the ability for societies to build their own towns though. That's a glaring lack in this game and really should be possible. Make them conquerable as well to add spice to things. According to the Devs that's in the long term plan though so I think t his game has a LOAD of potential both in the short and long term. Bottom line: If you're tired of fantasy and EVE isn't y our thing, this may just be the game you are looking for. It's a nice cross-over MMO... not totally a sandbox but not an EQ clone either. |

Originally posted by zymurgeist Wait, I head this line somewhere before.... let me think... oh ya, "it gets better after 25 in LOTRO too!" hehe Eh got me, what's for one isn't for the other. The OP's post makes me think one thing, kid with needed instant gratification that only WoW can bring. Sorry to the vets here about brining up the WoW thing :P it's over done. But alas, this is what he want's and that is theonly game that will give it to him. Even Warhammer dosn't have instant gratification, suprisingly I didn't see it all that great, it reminded me of WoW allot except it looked different. But that's for another board. Eh, people will like it or hate it, as I hate WoW he hates this, till I actually see resonable post I should just stop looking they all read the same.
