heh its like 2 different games. As a game dev in training myself, it kind of blows me away that a game can change that much |

Lets all be glad they didn't continue the look/feel of 2004 and for those who don't know or understand why the game has changed to what it is today..... “Uninspired Results” Moving Tabula Rasa forward, at this point, meant moving backwards. Garriott and his team took a close look at what they had: With an eye on time to market, and a belief that MMOs didn't sell based on graphical quality, the team that hoped to innovate on every front had chosen to use a licensed rendering engine. The backdrop of their world was a blending of sci-fi and martial arts served up in an awkward futuristic art nouveau style. The choices in male avatar costuming were so poor that nearly everyone chose to play as a female. A focus on making story the center of the game led to a dependence on instanced content, making the world feel desolate and lonely. Despite a chorus of voices warning the Tabula Rasa team that the game just wasn't working, the developer continued on in a belief that, according to Garriott, it would all somehow come together in the end. http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060323/huebner_02.shtml

Like i said glad they choose a different route then what we saw back then, which wasn't in any way original. Geuss you only comment on the small part i copy/pasted and not the full report where the link is there for. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

All I can say is thank god they ended up where they are now. I'm not so sure I would have picked up TR in that sort of "setting". The TR we have today is much more unique and more immersive than the world that was in place at that time. I was running around the Plains last night and have a new respect for the game. Just outside of the main base, there were airstrikes, strikers coming in every few minutes, 5 or 6 dropships of bane, just all going at it. The setting was perfect, war was truly at hand. Flying shards of ice, balls of fire, and electricity were abundant and everyone was battling it out till every last Bane was gone. It was just a realization that they accomplished something many games just can't. Then I set my graphics up only to leave myself drooling over what a better computer would provide in terms of quality. I've been playing without shadows for so long now, I didn't realize what I was missing. Man if only I had a few grand. |

Lol, I didn't realise TR had started out a different game and was completely redone half way through development. The combat looked like something from mortal combat with all those martial arts moves and spinning around the place. |

I was looking forward to the game back then. I liked the look of character movements and skills. Not that i do not like current TR, but i liked the first idea alot more. |

It reminded me of "The Saga of Ryzom". I do like the color of the old style though. If they would of use the current TR Engine style and kept the Fantasy Sci-Fi, would of been really cool. |

Originally posted by TrenchgunUnfortunately, it isn't that rare when Richard Garriott is involved. Ultima IX was restarted from scratch at least three times and UO2 was canned by EA when Mr. Garriott decided it needed to be restarted from scratch a second time. If it wasn't for the fact that his boss is his brother, the Asian/Western MMO hybrid Tabula Rasa would likely been released.

I would have loved to have UO2 ...and I think alot of older gamers would agree
old TR < new TR |
