On the base mmorpg.com page there is an advertisement of LOTRO where it is a long trailer of cinematic action. What a freaking lie!

The gameplay is NOTHING like the cinematic! sure, i understand its marketing benefit, but they are selling their game based on a movie (in this case the cinematic trailer).

Is it too much for me to hope that soon we'll actually achieve GAMEPLAY that matches the quick free flowing form of most action cinematics? Take the intro movie to WoW. It looks AWESOME! realistic textures, and fluid motions, then you get in game and you're like... WTF is this cartoon #&&%?

There is a serious disconnect. Have we become so jaded to this type of marketing scheme that we're oblivious to the gross decifiencies that most games employ?

I look forward to a day where game mechanics reach a fluid and rapid developement where i can actually control those life-like movements in an online world. I want my game trailers to be actual gameplay, not an artist's cinema rendering of what is COULD be like.

(i'm not adverse to wearing a suit or even a few key sticky pads and whirling about my room to imitate the actions of my online personality. Just get it in the mainstream !!! If you build it they will come, provided it has some quality to it).

anyone else feel similarly?

Eat purple!

You should change the title of this thread to "When hell freezes over".

Gameplay will never be the same as trailers and cinematics. It's just the way it is. Game companies use trailers to show off the game and they will show it off awesomely, it's their cruel way of making you spend your hard earned money on a game that could well be crap.

This is where demos and gameplay trailers come in handy.

you are of course correct, but do you not have a desire for the two to merge and reflect each other? Cronicles of Spellborn have done this to a degree... and it has been sucessful (imo) for them.

I agree, but it involves Hardware, Investment(Money) and time duration, as well as time before there's actually a possibility to do so for an MMO.

Well i agree gamepaly trailers like that are just borderline fraud in some cases.

Of course some trailers are pretty accurate tho like the recent EvE online - Trinity trailer

EVE is the only game ive ever seen with realistic trailers tbh. Everything in their trailers is actual ingame footage, which no other mmo's seem to follow unfortunately :(

Well yes, I want games to be as awesome as the trailers portray them to be. But not at the expense of the trailer. IMHO I kinda like how teaser trailer make the game look like the best thing that ever came out, it gets you phyched up about a game that you're already excited about. However, I do think that trailers should show you actual gameplay as well. I mean, before buying "The Witcher", I had only seen the game trailers, no actual gameplay, then when I got it I hated it and re-sold it.

Personally, I think any game that exclusively uses CGI trailers for promotion is trying to hide how bad thier game is.  So I just don't play them.  On the other hand when a game has a couple fully in-game captured trailers, then I usually try them.

ALL of EQ2's trailers except for the intro movie are 100% in game cinematic. All of their expansions have used actual in game footage.
