I think, mostly, PvP belongs in FPS and not in MMORPGs.

I can see where it is fun; I always enjoyed the arena battle in EQ 1 when I was bored.  I actually did enjoy some PvP battles in WoW.  Nevertheless, speaking for myself, PvP is not important.

Duels should be in the game, and I liked SWG with the bounty hunter thing.

But what do you think?

How Imporant is PvP to YOU?

Extremely Important. Without PvP, I probably will not buy/play.
Important. I want it as a feature.
Neutral. All depends, man.
Unimportant. I really do not care for it.
Extremely Unimportant. It is another timesink that developers use to avoid innovation, creativity to enhance immersion and gameplay.

PvP is important to me but it does not blind me. I will try out new games and ideas and might find something new I could enjoy.

I think PvP is important because it provides a good end game factor I mean what do you do once you are leveled up and there is only mobs left grind them for cash or reroll an alt and do it all over again. Or do you go and compete against others try out diffrent armor till you have the ones that works for you in PvP.

I know people will not agree but WoW got it right in a way but not totally I mean with the whole BGs and Areans provides a big endgame content if you ask me.

Personally, I have always regarded any MMORPG without equitable PVE and PVP as incomplete.

Well thought out PVP is what I currently I evaluate all games for...which is one reason why I'm holding back on buying TR..... and anxiously waiting on WAR.

IMO.... if you only want to play PVE... might as well play single player games.... because they do a much better job in terms of content and combat.....

So long as good PvP is factored into the game instead of added as an afterthought it can add a huge dimension to the game (whether you're into fighting or not) in terms of player driven goals, politics, the need to socialise and an added importance to crafting.

I'd play a good PvE mmorpg, but for long term appeal, I'd want a bit more than that.

Extremely important.  I won't play another MMO whose primary focus is on grinding (leveling), raiding, and acquiring the next uber item.

I generally dislike one on one pvp (if i wanted that, i'd still be playing Tekken!)

But there is such satisfaction to be had in a hard won group-pvp battle that although its not the most important thing i think about, it's definitely a big consideration when i look at new games...

I don't much care for the qualifications you put on your selections.

As for myself, I don't care for it at all.

If the mmorpg doesn't have PVP then i don't play it cause whats the point of online games if you can't compete to be the best, might aswel just be playing a single player RPG otherwise.

Don't really care much, and if it's FFA PvP with full loot then I will absolutely not even touch it. I'd rather play something more akin to how WoW implemented it, and MAYBE how EQ implemented it. But I don't really care one way or the other because I play to talk and socialize with other players, not to beat em up.

Besides, if I want to play PvP at it's fullest, then I put on Halo or Battlefront.

When I want to play a PvP game I fire up the ole Counter Strike and have a good time of it. To me that is PvP at it's fundamental core.  PvP in MMORPG's is pretty fun even though  most of the MMO's seem  to be geared toward the  item centric combat  atm . But like the OP mentions PvP is not so important to me as the PvE aspect of the game.

I wont try a game if its build around PvP only such as Archlord or so.

'Sidenote' Whats the different between an ego-shooter and an PvP-only MMORPG, sorry but I see none (please no flames about this opinion)

If PvP and PvM are on the same gameplay than I would try it.  A Game without PvP could have a hard time to get enough Player to live long but who stays really long and pays the most fees ? Yes its the RP-Player.

So a great game have to have both but one side MUST go without the other.

important

I find most PVE only games you can get burned out on much faster than if they have even a basic pvp system.

WoW is a good example,it has a lot of PVE right now,but it also has battlegrounds and world pvp options to do when you need a break from questing and grinding. Not that WoWs pvp is actually any good of course, even the most hardened wow fanboy would admit its not particularly balanced. But its there and its a seperate diversion from the rest of the world which breaks it up a little.

Free for all pvp isnt a requirement of mine, its a very pointless mechanic to just run around ganking people with no consequence or purpose;pvp needs a point to it such as area control, base capturing,or some kind of ladder system.Shadowbane had a good pvp set up,but it was marred by practically everythign else being poor. I also like to have consequence to your actions such as being marked as an outlaw and having friendly npcs become hostile to you, though this seems to be in more korean games that western.

Looting, again not something that sways me for or against ,if its in its in,if it isnt who cares?it adds nothing anyway, and it doesnt have a place in games that already have a heavy gear grind to them, but in non gear based games its good. perhaps one day a game will allow you to loot body parts to hand in elsewhere for rewards such as buffs, gear, whatever. I hope that we start to see non gear based games more often.

Ive played/play both free for all and consentual pvp games,so im not bothered if either system is in place as long as its balanced and has a point to it,be it guild warfare, faction or racial.Consentual at least gets rid of all the utter tools which is a good thing as far as im concerned.

Conversely I won't try any new title built soely with PVE in mind. As in all things balance is essential.

I don't find it coincidence that games built with both PVE & PVP in mind useually have tighter gameplay mechanics, fleshed out skills, AI and balance.

Wow! Twice in one day, I have to disagree with you [I must be having a bad hair day or something ;)]

I play MMOs, mostly solo, because they have MORE content than most single player games.  NWN2 had a nice campaign, but it ENDED - MMO's don't end...

PvP is a requirement and it can't be Brawn Vs. Brawn type PvP only.  Theres soo many other things players can compete with besides just combat.

I'm neutral on this topic, I enjoy, but some games are not designed for it. Even if you allow for dueling, you have to take time and balance skills for both PvE and PvP. I only enjoy PvP if the game is designed with the idea from the beginning. If not, hyper focus on making a great PvE environment, we have enough games trying to do everything.

The innate sin of Mankind.
