Well, I'm different, I'm mean and I don't like stupid people. I probably would have made fun of her until she cried, then dated her best friend afterwards. Ok...I'm not really THAT mean. But I really do hate stupid people. Not people who are naturally less intelligent, but those who choose to be less intelligent. Trust me there's a difference. The easiest way to guarantee a slap upside your head, or at least a look of pure disgust is to speak to me in ebonic or web fanboi slang or ask me if Florida is in Europe.... Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the occaisional WTF, or STFU, or FTW, for teh win...etc. But when it is apparrent that you REALLY think that is the only way to spell those words or phrases...then you should just hold your breath until you die and for the love of god (or whatever) do NOT reproduce! Let your bloodline die with yourself. Um...like...I'm like...done and stuff, like yeah. D.

wot u meen? Old joke. No seriously. People bringing up grammar and spelling mistake in a discussion is the lowest kind of critism(see right there, i cant spell that treeing word). But I wouldn't tolerate ingame spelling errors in quests or like that. Or if i read a long forum post, that is very serious... I would question the poster. But all in all... It's really how you present yourself to others. If there is people I would try and look presentable for, I would try and write better. Speaking as if you are illiterate in a forum is akin to showing up for an interview in a corporate setting wearing a throwback jersey some basketball shorts and untied nike's. It's one thing when its obvious you are doing it on purpose, but when it seems to be the only way you know how to spell it makes you be perceived as idiotic. D.

/daddy voice on I've always taken pride in trying to be well spoken and made an effort to spell and use decent grammar. Being a bit older now (35) when I try to carry on a conversation with people typing poorly I feel like I'm being Dad or something. I think in the same way I'm trying to present myself as an intelligent person many are trying to give the impression they're cool or something. In my opinion, it's all good, be who you want to be. I should mention that typing/speaking with bad english will come at a price. Eventually people do grow up and have to go to college, get big jobs, join the work force, etc etc Don't think it can be turned on and off like a switch. Many language habits are hard to break. good or bad. The curse of the youth is live for today and who cares about tomorrow. /daddy voice off

It's not the fact that people are getting "stupider or dumber" I think it's the fact people are just getting plain lazy. In my gaming experience, when I run into someone speaking that god awful l337 speak or what ever, I just ignore them, and hope they go away. It's a lazy way to communicate, and annoying when someones just doing it to sound all cool, or what they think others think is cool.... |

It's not games, it's something that I would say was founded in irc. I chatted before I started playing mmos and I see the exact same acronyms, it's no coincidence. 1337 used to mean something, now it's mainstream and became something to identify a script kiddie or wannabe - real hackers only use it as a joke so that's why it became offensive- it got common and 14 yr olds picked it up that didn't know a router from a hub. Anyway, shortcuts serve a purpose for typing faster but when it becomes the entirety of the sentence, it loses it's charm and that's why it's annoying. I refuse to talk to people that can't put together legible phrases, that's the way to cope. Some people don't even know what stuff means, how many ppl say "pone" for pwn which should be "own", it's called a typo just like teh and ppl actually say "te" - If 3 letter words that have that "awesome cryptography" on them give you trouble decoding, there's not much hope for your english. That crap makes me want to smack them just hearing someone say "pone" like they have a clue. Yet pone is it's own word because of the pstupid now. I had a b/f that liked to write love letters w/all that junk, it made me not want them and ponder his iq - he thought they were cute. |

Don't forget that besides the natural mistakes of the very young players, you also have to count with the ones from spanish, portuguese, german, french etc. MMORPG are not for english ppl only. I know it's peace and not piece, but I made that mistake on a sentence here recently. |

It’s easy for an intelligent person to behave like an idiot. It’s a lot harder for an idiot to try and look intelligent, and you can always tell the difference.
I’m 36 now and appalled at the grammar skills on the internet. I think I caught the tail end of the education system actually caring about students able to read and write properly when they leave school. For some reason, it doesn’t seem to matter that much anymore. Reading many of the posts on the site alone makes my eyes bleed.
As someone else said, I don’t mind a “FTW” or “WTF” every now and then. The people purposely using this leet speek garbage doesn’t bother me as much as someone actually trying to make a point, and every other word is incorrect.
Some of my favorites are…
“Your an idiot!”
“I no your an idiot!”
“There wrong!”
“Their wrong!”
“That’s rediculous!”
“Where the best!”
Yes, for those of you who don’t know, here’s your first English 101 lesson..
Your is not the same as You’re (which is a contraction of YOU ARE)
No is NOT the same as know
There, Their, and They're are NOT the same things (you look them up as your homework assignment)
Rediculous is spelled RIDICULOUS !
Where is NOT the same as We’re (WE ARE)
Occasionally when the whole spelling and grammar subject comes up on these boards, you get some genius who calls people like me “grammar Nazis” (or sometimes it’s ” grammer” /sigh). You may also get someone who quotes that famous paragraph from some university where every word is spelled incorrectly, but you can still understand the meaning of what they are trying to say. All those responses do is defend stupidity and laziness. Personally, I feel it speaks volumes about you as a person how you express yourself publically. If you try to make a serious argument defending your point about something, the grammar you use will make me take your opinion and actually respect it, or take it with a grain of salt. If you say something like ”Your wrong, that’s the most rediculous thing I’ve herd”… well, if you don’t see the 3 errors in the previous sentence, you just failed. Ask mommy for another $8,000 to take the college course again.
I know we all make spelling/grammar errors. Yes, you will probably find one or two in my post. We’re not perfect. However, I love the analogy that someone else posted in this thread. It’s like coming to a business interview wearing some basketball shorts and untied sneakers. That’s perfect, think I’ll use that J |

I can attest that the quality of spelling and composition began to degrade online long before the MMO's came about, however I do think it has hastened the decline. Writing correctly and coherently is a skill; it takes work and practice and not everyone will be able to always succeed to the extent that they might like. That said, it really bugs me when I read "loose" instead of "lose". I don't know why, it just gets to me. I mean, what the heck are they teaching you kids in skool deez dais? Aint my tacks dollers going to make you all better edjimcated, or what?
"There goes the neighhboorhood! Hey! All you darn kids! Go on! Get offa my game! |

I agree, the bad English of your youth carries into adulthood...and the net result is the English language will evolve and adapt itself to the communication needs of the future. Typing in shorthand may just be the wave of the future, and one day people may all speak in shorthand as well.... People of even 50 years ago would be appalled at the state of the language today.... imagine what will happen in 50 more years. (well, im hoping we can all be wired for thought transmission, but I'll be dead by then anyways)

I would suggest that those of you complaining about proper spelling and grammar go back and check what you posted. I know my skills are not the greatest, but when you complain about other people. Where does that put you? I found problems in all your post, so you all get an F. |

Originally posted by Centhan Other than the issue of making many of the readers assume you're a bit thick, nobody's actually mentioned the whole point of having decent spelling and grammar (or at least some kind of standardization). It's to make yourself understood, which I would have thought mattered if you were going to the effort of typing something into a forum in the first place.

I personally rebel against the idiotic internet slang, and grade-school grammar that plagues MMOs. I almost always RP a character who uses "long words" (for lack of a more proper descriptive), giving the feeling of brooding, malevolent intelligence. Personally, I find people who use terms such as "I no" to be repulsive, and rarely respond to them without a certain amount of contempt. |

Honestly I think the problem is that the younger generation (yes the younger generation are the ones responsible for using this new wave of "internet lingo" and by younger I mean teenagers now) were new to learning the usage of the PC at such a young age and because of this they were unable to type as fast as some older players. This and the text messaging craze created a need for them to shorten words. Some words are just ridiculous though. They will shorten a word and mispell it but it will use the same amount of letters as the original word does. I know that most of the people I game with are unable of typing in excess of 60 words per minute and as such begin to use a lot of shorthand. My mother is a medical transcriptionist and types fast enough that the keyboard letters wear off of the keyboard (she gets a new keyboard every few months) and I learned how to type quickly while growing up. The fact that this younger generation wasn't really pressured into having correct grammar, puncuation and spelling has made it much worse than in earlier generations. I remember going through Highschool taking Honors and AP english all the way through 11th grade, then in 12th grade I got lazy and decided to only take regular 12th grade english. (Now keep in mind this was in 1996) That regular 12th grade english class was a joke. They were learning vocabulary words such as decapitate. It has only gotten worse since then. One of the worst things this country has done is not wanting children to fail. Coddeling them and promoting them unwarrented to higher grades has created a generation of extremely lazy and stupid individuals. I mean honestly what happened to getting F's, or not making the little league baseball team because you just weren't very coordinated? What happened to getting held back a year in school if you needed more work? The problem is only going to get worse until we realize as a Nation that our current school system is failing us entirely and we need to completely revamp it. First thing we need to scrap is Summer Break. It is an entirely dated system that makes the first 2-4 months of school worthless because the teachers have to spend that time reviewing what the children learned the year before. Next we need to make standards higher and fail kids when they aren't getting it. Also, we need to make mandatory learning programs for kids that help them focus on core learning principles. Our children should all be on programs that allow them to at least take Mathematics through Pre Calculus before they graduate Highschool. They should take science all the way through Laboratory Chemistry and Physics. They should learn how to do research papers properly well before they ever step foot into college.
Man I am so disgusted by the US school system currently... /rant off Currently playing: Looking Foward too: |

I sling slang around for grins. I typically use 'interweb' lingo to make fun of those that do it on purpose. People use that form of 'ill communication' for a few reasons: They don't know the correct way to type, spell, and/or they have no clue how to turn thoughts into sentences. "lrn 2 english" They are lazy. They are following the masses. (See: move "Idiocracy" for future of world) They are kids, trying to sound like adults or older and cooler kids. Because they can. To get on the nerves of those that don't approve. ... I'm in my 30's myself. I really use the /ignore command a lot in WoW. (Barrens Chat is pretty much the best example of what raw sewage is like in the form of written text.) ... Typo's happen.
