I’m tempted to say something like “Tip #1 beginner is spelled b-e-g-i-n-n-e-r” and leave it at that :p

Anyway Antonia Bayle is probability the best server for a new player to start on for PvE, Nagafen for PvP. Race isn’t make or break for any character so choose one you like.  Class is somewhat dependant on what you want out of the game, but Summoners like Conjurors and Necromancers are solid bets for all aspects of the game, as are some priests with the right AA spec.  A melee speced Warden or a Battlepriest speced Inquisitor work well.

I will agree that Antonia Bayle seemed to be the most new player friendly server i found. I started with a conjurer as my first char and im loving it, but I have been having fun with my Trubador as well. I would say just give a few a try and see what you like best.  Im also pretty new to the game but i havent really found there to be much difference between races so i dont really think it matters, but im not positive on that.

I'm going to be starting the game back up some time next week.  Everyone tells me that antonia bayle is THE server right now so that's what i'm going with. Good luck

Since the game is not a competition...you don't have to think in WoW terms here

i.e: What is my best build

Instead treat it like a game to have fun...pick what you like and enjoy..Want to look at a Catlike race, and feel like a fast striking type of rogue? Swashbuckler is cool..Want to be an Elf that changes into many types of creatures...Fury...etc..

Think RPG, and you can't lose...if like Casters...pick a caster...Fighters...etc...

Well, you get my drift..

The game was built around this effect, and all classes can fit some WoW based stereotype Tank/Heal/DPS

Check out some sites to read up more like eq2i.wikia.com, or eq2.tentonhammer.com

And of course...go in to have fun...don't rush, and ask for help, and you will grow..

Cheers!

I think you got that a little backwards, lol.  The WoW classes are EQ1 based stereotypes, lol.

I chose the Fae race because I hate falling damage since Fae has FREE FALL as racial ability you won't ever have to fear heights anymore. Also the Fae race is quite pleasing to my eye although they're one of the smallest races in the game (I think they're even smaller than gnomes) and physically the weakest (lowest strength, stamina but amazingly agile due to high agility).

As the above posters have said, play whatever classes you wanted. If you want to solo alot and yet contribute to a party then play a fury/warden, necromancers/summoners and Shadowknights are one of the best soloers. Every class can solo to some degree but some more efficiently than others while some classes are more group oriented. You don't have to grind in EQ2 since there are a billion quest in the game and you can level up exclusively thru quests alone (some people even chose to do that by disabling the combat experience). With the introduction of the AA (Advance Achievement) system most people prefer to level up by doing quests. Believe me you'll be 70 before you've even remotely gonna be running out of quests to do and due to the mentoring system you can even go back and do early quests that you have missed or out-leveled.

All of the classes are based on D&D's classes. Both WoW and EQ both based their classes off D&D. While D&D got those classes ideas from pseudo real world/Fantasy world created by various other authors way back in the 18th century.

For example:

Assasins class are based on hashashin which are middle eastern sect of Shia muslims (that originated from Persia -- today's Iran) that terrorizes the crusaders by executing political assasinations.

Paladins are of course based on the very real knights templars (or holy knights) of the middle ages.

Mages are based on an ancient tribe of people living in ancient Media or Medea (near present day Iran/Kurdistan) called Medes (Magus/Magi in Latin/Greek). Which are the ancestors of the modern day Iranian people.

Druids are well known because they already existed in the ancient world and are priests/healers/scholars in ancient Celtic society.

Necromancers or Necromancy of course originated from the greek word Nekros (dead) and manteia (divination) and refers to practicioners/people who attempt to divine (speak to) the dead.

See? Go confuse the whole thing...

And of course...all class based style systems are based on Tolkien Fantasy, which is based on Mythological text like Beowulf...

Awww man...this could go on for a while...

Can we get back to Tank / Healer / DPS?

lol...Cheers!

Touché, well argued.  OP: If you have played any RPG, you should have the basic understanding of how the classes work.

Tank - Fighter (Guardian, Bezerker, etc)
Healer - Priest (Fury, Templar, Mystic, etc)
DPS - Mage/Scout
           (Wizard, Conjuror, etc)
           (Ranger, Swashbuckler, etc)

Basically, there are a hell of a lot to choose from, so go to www.eq2players.com or www.everquest2.com and read up on the classes to see what interests you.
