Fruitless argument. You might as well shake your fist and gnash your teeth for all the good it'll do. MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR |

Hmm.... I suggest you consider not reading the forum threads that annoy you then..... quite a few don't relate to WOW comparisons "Just because you aren't paying doesn't mean it's not PTW." - Amaranthar |

I'm going to start saying everything copied Pong, which they did. It was the first game, graphics got copied from that game onto other games etc and so fourth up until what we have now.
Also think about it, The ball goes from side A to side B and back to A again, sound familiar with quests?
So, everything technically copied Pong. Thank you very much. |

Ok, I'll take a shot at seriousely responding.... People like WoW because it streamlined the MMO. It took all those elements that they saw working in other MMOs and removed all the annoying little edges. While it is a highly derivative piece of plagarism, it is shiny and sleak and easy to understand. You can jump right in and have fun. It's easy and accessible. The vast majority of MMO players don't want difficulty. They want rewards with the illusion of having earned them. The main thing people want after WoW, I think, is ease of use. Well, Wow is the biggest game around right now so of course thats the game everyone compares with the new ones. Was the same With EQ 5 years ago, will be the same with whatever game thats gonna be biggest in 5 years from now too... When Wow came it put the standard for the games to come. Wow has been on the top for a few years now and maybee it will be for a few more years but I have never seen a game that lasted over 5 years keeping that big popularity (ok, outside South Korea). Sooner or later will a new and better game show up, something new and fresh. Maybe its will be Conan or Warhamster, Maybee GW2 or Maybe somethings else later. Technology changes fast and old stuff get outdated. Thats actually the good part. I Wonder what Blizzard will cook up after Wow? World of Diablo maybe? World of starcraft? Wow2? And Wow is a brilliant game, no-one said anything else but people will speculate on forums about who will become the next big game, thats only natural. Of course there will still be people playing Wow in 10 years but it will be like UO is today, a few fanatics. Unless of course Blizzard actually can totaly change the game with time, but no one else have ever done that, and also that no one else is able to do a better game. Still, I would never complain about Wow. |

Before EQ, everything was compared to UO (and before that to other muds and what not). After EQ, everything was compared to EQ. After WoW, having obtained roughly 20x the subscribers of EQ (450,000 x 20 = 9 million), has now taken over the comparison throne. In case you haven't figured it out, we ALREADY KNOW that EQ was before wow. The simple fact of the matter is that we don't care. WoW provides a much more meaningful comparison as so many more people have been exposed to it. It is a completely logical progression, and as far as I'm concerned you have serious issues going all batshit insane about this topic. Go do some yoga or something to relax. You are way too uptight.... |

There was a time when MMORPG.com wasn't a bashfest? Just expect it and look over it. There are useful bits mixed in with the braindead comparisons. Don't rely on anything here, just try to get a general feel for a game and then try it yourself. Most of the people that post on this site (me included) are jaded and cynical about the MMO market. WoW is just the easiest metric and a convenient baseline. MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR |

If you don't want to read WoW comparison threads then don't read them. There isn't any law that says you have to read every thread in the forum (well...except perhaps the moderators). |

WoW is referenced for a very simple reason, and if you weren't blinded by your dislike for the game (people in general, not just the OP) then you would understand WHY people reference it. The vast majority of MMO players have at some point played World of Warcraft. It has a huge subscription base and is now part of the realm of common knowledge. There. The end. Problem solved. Using WoW as an example isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Before WoW everyone referenced EverQuest because it was a game that not all, but a good number of MMO players had experience with for good or bad.
