Hey, as the title suggests, I'm looking into playing FFXI for the first time, and wanted to check on server populations. I've been burned the last few games I've tried because the server pops were so bad that grouping was a rarity. How easy is it to find groups, what is the community like, and what jobs are usually in demand?

Hello, I assure you that grouping in FFXI is not a rarity, as it is nearly impossible for almost every single job to solo effectively. This is all after about level 10. Level 1 to 10ish are solo levels, or small groups of 2 or 3 people if you so choose. Finding groups is very situational, as it all depends on what jobs people are playing at any given time. However, the second link that Satimasu posted is fairly accurate in most situations for each job finding groups. Tanks, healers, and other support jobs are likely more in demand than damage dealers. This is the reason I chose my server, Asura. Although, the population is spread out rather evenly among the servers. For the most part the FFXI community is great. There's some elitist types and rather immature players, of course, but people are very helpful, especially if you're willing to put yourself out there and ask questions. One's reputation can be important in this game, so people tend to act polite. In groups, members congratulate each other on any accomplishments (usually leveling up), let each other know when they have to leave, and often even find replacement members for themselves so that their leader doesn't have to. Here's a couple previous threads of people asking similar questions, if you haven't already seen them:
