It's taken over 3 years, but now PE is devoting itself to the production of STO. Based on game details released so far, what appeals to you? Beyond the IP of course. Are people overeacting? Will STO indeed be the AAA world-class title that G&H could not be? For me, I hope to see freedom of exploration without many instances locations, I hope space travel is not bound by planets, and I would like housing on planets and on personal starships. I think the core experience of a great STO game would be the experience of a player with a few dedicated friends, traveling the galaxy in their own starship with interiors to relax, battle, train, and explore in. and Guilds should get their own starbases and capital starships and planet-side bases. I would like to see social destinations where players can trade and heal and relax and do missions. My nightmare scenario would be the game becoming EvE in space with a dash of SWG, and WoW on the ground with a dash of Trek. |

Based on what I saw in G&H beta, the future looks bleak for STO as long as it stays with PE. The executives at PE, by their own admission announced that after 5 years of development they had failed to create a polished quality game that could successfully compete in today's MMO marketplace. So what's changed, why should we belive they can now successfully and miraculously create an even more ambitious AAA MMO? Based on everything that PE and it's management have done to date, a look at this list can help you predict STO's future.

I have gotten to the point where I am absolutely going to leave MMOs alone for awhile (going back to consoles) until next year at least. I was a frequent over at STO.net (once upon a time) but after reading several threads and even discussing some things with the developers (me trying to direct them in the right direction in game dynamics) with consistant thread upon, thread ,upon thread. I realized, That it was a futile effort, a waste of time and all out a wasted interest to even talk about the game until, there was concrete screen shots, a laid out plan (which they have been lying about for almost 2 years now). A concrete directed outlook on how they would cater to "all" the masses (currently they are interested in only casual mmoers (non trek types to). If this game resembles anything in the order of SWG for the genre (game made me almost vomit at anything Star Wars after playing it for 22 mos) I will not touch it with a ten foot pole. Until Daron and the "Star Trek Rat Pack" can get things together and actually show something concrete like a "Official forum" (tired of one sided "Cinc arguments" on STO.net) I'll be joining the others here with my "bashing STO stick" here. I really hate to say this about the game and I have been a "Trekker" for a long time (going on 28 years now) but currently this game is in trouble and if it is released next year will certainly not be done (i'm 100% sure about this). |

A clarification is in order. Most of Perpetual Entertainment's critics on this forum aren't really bashing STO. Critics like myself simply express our skepticism, and point out the failings of PE, and it's lack of credibility as a legitimate MMO development studio. Simply put, most critics on this forum are not opposed to the idea of having a Star Trek themed MMO created, we just don't belive (based on the evidence) that PE is up to the task. So, we aren't STO bashing, we are just critics of PE. And to keep this thread on topic, STO has no future with PE in charge of the project. |

Personally I am going to take a wait and see approach. Do I have concerns based on what I have read and seen to date? oh yes, very much so. I really do not want another generic mmorpg, that is covered by WoW. I really do not want another Earth and Beyond, visually stunning but lacking depth. What I am looking for is a doorway into the Universe that I grew up with. When i log into STO, I want to feel like I am "going boldly where no man has gone before," not to sector 546 and quest giver 2978 to kill 15 tribbles for a phaser +3. I really do not want to spend 4 nights a week raiding a Borg ship to get a tier 5 warp engine for a ship that only needs me to fly about the universe. But will I say right now, today that PE has no hope? No, i really can not do that. So i wait like an Orion Pirate fo that merchant to come this way. After all the hype, all the smoke, I want to see what the game is. Then and only then will I decide if PE's work merits my patronage. |

A big part of a mmo is the comunity and the trust we have in the developpers. What PE just did with G&H has just thrown that trust to a really low level. I just hope it can't get worse and only go better from this point. |

Trust is something that belongs with us humans but we all need to learn some day that hype/promises and whatnots simply don't work well in this industry. And aslong we continue to see people putting to much trust in these company's we will continue to read topics of htese games when released of allot of disappointments. Especialy those who follow games for years are in most cases the loudest to share their disappointment when such game is released. Just check any release'd mmo for hte last 2.5 years and you all will understand what i mean. As that is what happens when people put their trust in these company's as honostly i can not think of one MMO that has been released the last 2.5 years that people really seemed to love/like, all we saw at every new mmo in the last 2.5 years ALLOT of people who fel for its hype but didn't get what has been hyped. Trust your own jugdment when you get the change to play something they hacve created but never jugde a game of its hype as ....well being reallistic it would mean else i should still believe in Santa Cla....oops sorry The only way you should trust a game company is when you work for them, then it's importent to fully trust them. But after all the experiance i have with games i wish i could trust them but the fact remains we can't, we can only have hope............or ......step into the gaming industry ------------------------------------------------------------ |

...is it really that bad? Is G&H that bad? I haven't played it but the premise sounded good.
I loved EnB but they screwed it with little depth or space to explore. That and the weird, non-unique stances everyone had in station. It was ahead of it's time with both an avatar and a ship That third person perspective in the cockpit was AWESOME. I still remember it. |

I was in beta, and yes it was bad. Go read some of the comments on beta. Think about this, if the game were any good, wouldn't PE prefer to go ahead and launch it? Again, go read the PE interview where its executives talk about their reasons for shelving G&H. Here is a link to the interview: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/gameId/187/setView/features/loadFeature/1518
