MMORPG Character Monuments ...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest... |
I was reading about the WoW movie (which I wager in addition to paying $9, we will have to spend DKP to see) thats currently in the works and it made me wonder. What MMORPG would you like to see made into a running TV series (Lets say 10 episodes). Rather than just stating a name of a game.... What would be the encompasing plotline? what would be the main chars? I tink DAOC would make a fun series. Chronicaling an extended battle over one of the Keeps (Bled for example). Each week the battle from the viewpoints within each faction. The Series runs until the Keep is taken/or saved by one of the attacking realms. Torrential |

I think FFXI would make a pretty good TV show. Not only does it have lots of lore like WoW, it's got coherent story lines. WoW, not so much. Chris Mattern |

EVE tv serie would be nice, it could tell the story of young pilot who trains skill points and grinds money for better ships, joins a huge corporation and takes part to epic battles, falls into love with virtual friend only to discover that she's a guy IRL, and feels so betrayed that he leaves the corporation and turns into bitter pirate.
And a Vanguard tv serie named Saga of Egoes. It would ofc tell about the development of Vanguard. |

UO...the history between Lord British and Blackthorn would be a good background with the series being based from the PIOV of a young squire. There could be an episode where someone in a luminous robe and a tribal mask kills Lord British, it would be ok though, he would be back in the next episode looking ever so slightly embarrassed.
Would be a good show though as long as it wasn't handled along the lines of Hercules or Xena. Notice: The views expressed in this post are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the reviews of MMORPG.com or its management. Neil Thompson |

WOW. It has a much deeper dynamic and storyline. The cartoon look already exists. The possibilities are endless with WOW as a cartoon on tv. You could have a tauren fighting a paladin in the arena area then have each one talk back and forth and have the pally bubble then say that he has to go for tea time and hearth out on the tauren. Then have a mess of alliance come in and kill that tauren.

Uhh... I guess I'm partial to City of Heroes. If it was done right, it could be a fun cartoon. =========== |

EvE has a whole universe of stuff that could be used in a tv show. But I guess there would be problems about (being in a pod) How could you have a main character. I think they could handle it by maybe following the team on a pirate ship(ship on EvE do have people on them). So much could make a show.
My mind is swimming with to many idea right now <p align="center"><a href="http://cyborg.namedecoder.com"> |

Guild Wars, it could be a series of mini-series, ranging from Factions to Eye of the North, and could follow the same character through. Probably a character made specifically for the show, like a player character would be. |

lol I can see it now.
Person1 : I swear to god you say one more thing about my mom and I'll KS you all day and you'll never finish that quest. Person2: Yeah, its ok man, I already finished the quest to sleep with your mom. Person1: Thats it, I told you... Person2: The quest reward sucks though! I got an epic crabs drop and its BoP! Worse yet, its non-destructable like a hearth stone. *begins to scratch* Person1: Dude, wrong on so many levels. Person2: Yeah I know, thats no quest reward. Thats more like quest punishment! What was that guy thinking giving me that quest... Come to think of it, I had to use a video camera to complete it too... Person1: If that gets put on the auction house, I'm never speaking to you again. Person2: Yeah, it would sell for a lot of gold thats for sure. Especially since its a legendary item. - - "What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?" - - |

EVE imo, so many possibilities to do a good politically involved show. |

Now THERES a target audience. the real question is, how many viewers do you think a TV show based on an MMORPG would draw? I mean, considering most of us never turn on the TV, something like that could be airing and we wouldnt even know it. Like all my gamer buddies I ask if theyve seen that Toyota world of warcraft commercial. Nobody I asked has ever seen it, and the ones that have viewed it on you-tube guess my point is, I dont think us MMO gamers log in enough TV time for something like that to appeal to us. Id last five minutes watching it, walk away from it and log into whatever game it was based on and play it :) but, in fairness of the OP and the fun topic, I think Eve has unique enough lore to accomplish this. |

Hopefully, no one will try. They already made a mmorpg into a TV series and it wasn't very good because of how it went. Manwha---->MMO---->Anime series based on the mmo. It woulda been alot better if they just skipped basing it on the mmo and based it straight on the original story. |

Perhaps, but I wager a series based on a MMORPG would be as good as the writing. If someone puts a show based on WoW and says "bah, we can do this cheap..people will watch it just because it has WoW in the title" You will see a crapy show get canned in its first week. However, you pay writers what they are worth and actors/animators to do it right...I bet you have a significant fan base that will take time out to watch. Think of it this way...if 4 years ago you told me that I could make a blockbuster trilogy based on a Walt Disney ride ..I would have laughed. I'm not laughing ..."Arrrrr" Torrential |

You don't know enough of the game lore. You should read some of the offical fiction and other articles CCP has posted up. It's fascinating stuff. Pod pilots are not permanently grafted to their pods; they get out of them when they're not piloting the ship. So it wouldn't be that hard to base a show around a pod pilot. You'd see him interacting more with world while outside his pod than you see in the game, of course. The game reality is distorted to meet the needs of a practical game; the TV show reality would have to be distorted in different directions to meet the needs of a TV show.
All ships in EVE have people on them, even those run by pod pilots; the pod pilot is the only crew only on the smaller frigates. A battleship has thousands of crew; a titan has millions. Read "Hands of a Killer" in the EVE chronicles, which deals with a pod pilot recruiting a new officer for his ship. (And reminds you just how pod pilots are on the top of the heap--the average person in EVE doesn't have life nearly so good) Chris Mattern |
