This thread has gone on for a good amount of time and should be used as a base of nominations that could be listed and numerated in a poll, perhaps inserted by the original poster in the original post or just by anyone tacked on the end. You know, just insert three polls for past, present and future with all the choices that have been mentioned so far (including the 'none' slot) and then as people vote we can see the data all in one place instead of spread out. I'd do it, but I don't have time right now

Let's tally the results so far. Cast your votes in the following polls but still post and respond as well if you wish.

Let's tally the results so far. Cast your votes in the following poll but still post and respond as well if you wish, especially regarding your hopes or lack of hope for the future. The options for all 3 polls were pulled from all the previous responses as nominations and are not completely arbitrary. I put in almost everything mentioned except for perhaps one or two very obscure titles that were not seconded.

This maybe should be a separate thread and if so I apologize, but I'm curious looking at the results of what people think the best PVP game is, what makes the pvp in those games get their vote. In particular UO, I've never played it myself, just curious why most people here think the PvP in UO was good. What made it good? |

For all it's flaws UO was a step in the right direction. In my opinion it has all been a backward slide since then. The reasons I think it was so great is the fact that initially you could be attacked almost anywhere and loose all your stuff. These days that would never fly because the games are so focused on time invested in grinding to get all kinds of phat loot. In UO it didn't matter so much because this focus was more relaxed. Part of getting around and doing dungeons or harvesting materials was doing it safely with the possibility of getting attacked by other real players always just around the corner. It was part of the game, there was no opting out, but it made it exciting. It wasn't like you couldn't avoid getting caught. If someone came after you there was always the possibility to run for your life and often you would escape. I can't imagine how boring mining would have been for me if I hadn't had all those adventurous run-ins with bandits. Traveling was always exciting, you never knew when you would get attacked on the road. Sometimes you walked off the road in the trees if you really didn't want to run into someone. That's why I liked it, and why I can't stand current games where there is no excitement or dynamic danger. You go somewhere, you click, you bash, you die, you come back, etc. So boring. I haven't played it in ages, but as far as I can tell, very little of what made it good originally is left. Why would they change it if it was so great? Well clearly it had its problems and they wanted to address those. Unfortunately, as is the case in most MMOs they fixed things wrong. What we need is the right design with those desirable elements built in from day one and further supported and expanded on. |
