Friday Update: Servers and Beta Update:
- Oct 12, 2007
Today we wanted to update you on something which has been a lively debated topic recently, namely our server set-up and our Beta progress.
....................................... The server news is a bit of a bummer, but there is still the chance the server list may be editable - At least the continentental servers offer different choices and locations. The news about Beta is great, I enjoy the honestly and openess put forward. "This means that we are getting ready for larger-scale Beta deployment! We now have the hardware, the set-up (and an awesome game;) ready for larger scale testing!"

Looks like they are moving right along. So any ideas on when they might be sending out more beta invites? |

Well, have the people that are promised a beta spot allowed into the game yet? They've had a lot of competitions etc, so I doubt every winner has gotten their beta access yet since, they're only now ready for the general beta. It'd be kind of weird if they started sending out more beta invites before the people who are already promised a spot is allowed in. -- |

When the spot comes the spot comes for those who won one I guess:

Sometime in the future I imagine. Winning a contest gets you a spot in line, you still have to get to the front to get "in", and how fast the line moves will depend on beta progress ~ Athelan

For those of you we have defined as “veterans” (which have not gotten a Beta invite yet), we are looking to send an invitation within the next few weeks. and mmorpg.com winners arent invited either |

Originally posted by Thomson1 Veteran doesn't = competition winner Everyones in the que, competition winner would be higher up in general, but theres a place for everyone. yeah im patient but its strange that the mmorpg.com winners wait since tha beginning of 2007 with a guarenteed spot. as far as i know there where almost no other beta invite handouts before the mmorpg.com contest (i only remember the sweeptakes with 3 winners/each) and another funny thing, about 5 or 6 month ago i got the comic and an inflatable and today my brother woke me up and told me i got another letter from funcom, i couldn't imagine whats in it but heh? it was another signed comic, again by gaute godager, and even the same on? that makes no sense at all ^^ |

Thanks for the quote on the contest winners Avery, let's hope things will work as they anticipate, and that they can send lots of beta invites. Can't wait to see this new combat system. |

Does anyone know if the rating thing will check what copy you have of the game, or where you connect from? I'm seriously hoping it's the first. Since I don't want to have my experience limited by the fucked up game ratings here in Germany |

I would be under the impression its what country the game was sold in that hold the type of rating associated with it. For example, Some guild friends from Europe will probably get some N American friendsto purchase them a copy of the game and then mail then the key code usually previlant with the box and then the European guildies can just update their 'Open Beta Clients' (when open beta starts next year) so they can start playing with everyone from day one. So if you don't want to play with the "Clipped" German version - prob gonna have to buy from a different country.

Huge boo to localized servers. I prefer having a global base of people to play with at all hours of the day. |

Avery: That example is basically the same thing as the article said, but still not the answer to wether the rating will be based on where you're playing from or where you bought the copy. Since the animations are apparently controlled server-side, it's possible that buying a copy from another country won't help.. Though, in that case, playing through a proxy from another country probably will, but is likely to increase your latency :/ But, will Funcom release a list of countries/regions where they're cutting out the gore/nudity stuff? It'd be nice to know before you buy the game wether you'll get to play the real version or some censored stuff... -- |

you can be sure even tho i live in europa ill be playing on US servers, i dont understand why this is becoming more and more commen to do for game companies. only hurts them in the end. |

Very disappointed about localised servers. We all know its done for marketing reasons. If people want to sacrifice a bit of ping and full Customer support hours for the ability to play with their overseas friends, then really it should be their choice.

Im curious what this means for guilds that are neither American nor European - for instance Australian guilds? Do Aussies get classed as West Coast Americans or Eastern Europeans? Or can we choose which servers to use? |

Originally posted by FischerBlack It depends on the client you purchase. If you purchase and install the US client, then you will play on the US server(s). Conversely, if you purchase and install the EU client, you will play on the EU server(s). Australians tend to play on US servers anyway, so you'd want to get yourself the US client. |
