Games are like air! You wont miss either until you aren''t getting any.

OP  10/11/07 3:28:24 PM#1

Ive had this weird gut feeling about this game for a while but I always thought, "hey give em a chance... I dont really know anything about the game really" but now that I think about it... some things just dont make sense. Please, if Im totally off the chart here let me know. I need someone to give me hope cause I really like Star Trek and I really want this game to be good.

1. NO real Official website!! STO.net.... NO, just nonono. I dont care what they call it its not a PE run website with forums and info. No offence to the guys running it but its not what I want. If they cant make a real website, can they make a game?? I cant say that I have ever seen an MMO being developed without a dedicated in house run website.

2. NO PSIs! Mounts in space??? What is that? I cant even Imagine playing as a ship in a Star Trek RPG game. And NO, floating cities/spaceships isnt the same thing as playable Interiors its just an auction house with warpdrive for me, same as those boring stations in Earth&Beyond. Sure, have em by all means but not as an only option for interiors!

3. Fire, hire, hire, stupid comments, fire, fire, dump a game, hire, new investors, announcements not on official website about STO future(see no1). This puts a huge dent on my opinion about the stability of PE. What are they doing, just winging it??

PE needs to get their act together. Get a proper website going, start putting some info on it, listen to people, stop screwing around, this is a HUGE IP they have and screwing it up = fast track to not ever beeing able to touch a game again without a "SHOO, go away, shoo, dont touch this game, shoo I tell you!" Please, someone, gimmi hope, Joanna... anyone?

You must be one of those people who clearly doesn't search for info. STO.net was around before the conception of Star Trek online was thought of or bought by PE. They chose to use that site as an informational soure. If you happened to look in the forums, there is a post or two about them putting up a site sometime soon. STO.net shows alot of information about the game and its development. Your 2 seconds of glancing at it probably did not find it. Seriously, get over the NO PSI's. Its sad enough that you apparently did not use its search feature, yet you cry for something without one ounce of shared information that you have posted on that site. Before you cry about another game or part there of, please atleast look through the site, read the forums, and add to the debates. No your free to flame back, but i warn you, I bite! :)

That's the site the put up in January. The site that asked for e-mails and has never sent a SINGLE letter since then to anybody of note.

PE is proving itself to be more and more of an incompetent organization. Apparently, this cancellation even caught PE by surprise, because they are handling it like they do not care about their image.

If you think it is just a coincidence that GandH was an egregious WoW-clone, think again. Daron Stinnett worked on WoW and has publicly stated he likes WoW and many of the staff at PE worked on WoW.

STO had better preview something good, because they have released nothing of note in years.

After PE's graceless and total false advertising about GandH, can anyone trust them about STO now?

They could slap together a few new flashy screenshots, and a nice little gameplay video, but that would still be able to hide boring gameplay, just like WoW apparently did.

That reminded me of Johan and the Whale from the Bible.

I'll refer STO as Johan from now on.  I find it fitting at this point of time.

There is hope. The new investors no doubt told PE to stop wasting time and resources on G&H, and to get going on projects that stand to make a profit.

Deep cuts were made with this 3rd round of lay-offs that were part of restructuring that was due in no small measure to the business goals of the new investors.

Now for the tiny glimmer of hope... the new investors have shown that they aren't playing around. If they follow a pattern I've seen first hand, they will replace all of the upper management, even the founders, if they don't meet performance expectations, or they could dissolve the whole company and turn the project over to another studio or team.

If PE proves to the investors that they are completely hopeless, they could sell off any assets in an attempt to minimize their losses or even make a modest profit.

Simply put, PE can not continue to operate the way they have been. The new investors want to make a profit, and they will insist that PE produce, or else.

I hope that gives you enough hope to hang on.

No guarantees though.

Well, Idunno... I hope the new investors are standing there as Mr.Wallace would say it: "With a pair of pliers and a blowtorch" making sure they deliver. And that startrekonline.com, thats not a proper website, its a thing with pictures and a glowing Federation emblem, theres not a word on it about recent events.

If PE proves to the investors that they are completely hopeless....

Said Keogh

But PE already has. When you open an official website to the public, which they did nearly a year ago, you update it regularly and actually send e-mails to the 50,000 plus that signed up for a newsletter. You show some work after being in development for 3 years.

STO is a independent project from GH. Why did not PE plan things out properly where they could ACTUALLY DEVELOP their games, which was they THEIR JOB WAS. NOT SPENDING ALL DAY AT STO-NET.

If G&H was as great as PE was saying it was, why did they cancel it?

If STO is such hot stuff, then why have we not seen it yet? Why don't we know of any gameplay features that sound exciting?

PE is a company that obviously had no management, little discipline, and a bunch of money to burn. The company has lost all credibility.

THE MOST DAMAGING BLOW TO PE'S CREDIBILITY WAS PROPPING UP STO-NET AS THE OFFICIAL 'PREFERRED' COMMUNITY SITE, WHEN ALL GAMERS RECOGNIZED THE PRO-PE SLANT AND SPIN THERE AND CENSORSHIP AND THOUGHT IT WAS AWFUL. AND THE WAY DARON BEGAN TO DISMISS STAR TREK FANS AND THOSE WANTING A INNOVATIVE MMO.

PE cannot regain credibility unless STO undergoes drastic change, and that has very little chance of happening. I do think PE should be folded and STO sold.

I'd say things are somewhat grim atm...but hey... give them some time... they might have learned from past mistakes.  No reason to write them off completely, but wouldn't surprise me if they were still not stable enough to really move forward on this projects.

Since you quote me...

Allow me to qualify my remark.  I was referring to the new investors.

Now I have stated that what we have witnessed proves that the management at PE can't successfully run a company or project, but what I didn't mention was that they also do one thing exceedingly well.

They know how to schmoose the money out of an investor. They talk the talk as well as the slickest used car salesman you would ever want to meet. However, its nothing more than a con job, reminiscent of all the young MBA grads that created .com companies for the sole purpose of going public and cashing in, back during the boom days, with no intention of actually running the .com after the big pay off.

So, when do I get my first ship? "Everyone gets their own ship," said Daron, "Each player starts out with a small shuttle early on in the game, and then they graduate to successively larger ships as they gain in rank. They use that ship to get around the galaxy to fight against other enemy races, and to do missions for Starfleet on various planets. They will be able to group up with other players in space or on the ground."

So what does it take to get a ship of the size and prestige of a galaxy-class starship? "The largest ships, the ones that players dream of walking around on and working with, those are the equivalent of "player cities." It gives us a way to fill up these spaceships with real people instead of NPCs." The alternative would have required people who control massive ships to sit around in a hub somewhere looking for enough people to man something of that scale. Not exactly fun; we all hate waiting. http://www.mmoabc.com/a_8a8a8ae415429dd6011547d91cf30008./AGDC-2007-Star-Trek-Online-Early-Whispers.htm

That is a PREVIEW website, and contains no FAQ, no list of gameplay features, no screenshots, and no forum. And it is rarely updated. And it has been up since January 2007, only adding the interview links which countain limited information. And it has asked for e-mails since its birth yet none has even been sent. Plus it is PE's second PREVIEW/BLOG website for STO, the first one was up from 2004-2006 and is not deleted.

That was another Daron dodging of the real issue, PLAYER SHIP INTERIORS. Gamers accepted long ago that capital starship were not for individual players, however not offering ship interiors to players except as "player cities" leave a lot to be desire, and demonstrates the game headed in a derivative direction, a dumbed-down WoW clone which already failed with G&H.

Why not put the pressure on PE? They had pretty much a wide level of support from all gamers when they announced the game. Everyone lapped up their moves until 2006 and 2007, when the waiting and delays were only met with news the game was deaded to a generic formula, and the promise of player starships with interiors was scrapped. Gameplay details have revealed a totally unimaginative and stale approach just like G&H. The attitude of the STO devs have been increasingly condescending and blatantly phony. And all the "AAA MMO" descriptions of G&H and spinning the delays and layffs show PE is either not trustworthy or that they have no measure of quality at all. IT's not personal at all, but it is clear PE is a very, very small company with a bad rep, and STO in their hands is bad for them and for gamers. They do not have the resources and talent on board to develop the game people want, and there is no way a company with less than 200 employees can draw in talent that the big guns of the video game industry already have.

One thing is clear, the whole Perpetual Entertainment company strategy as established by Chris Mckibbin was to copy the success of WoW by adopting its game design right into their games. This is proven by many beta reviewes who complaining that many features of G&H were almost a design copy of WoW. G&H was delayed years and no longer can compete and or was too inferior too enter the market. PE hopes to do design the same strategy into STO, with less bugs, and capitalize on the IP to draw in gamers. They are implementing a cynical and tasteless strategy, only to maintain initial game sales and profit, but they will fail in the long-run, and another mediocre at best Star Trek game will be on the market.

PE will contribute nothing to the MMO genre, except to be noted as a company that tried to cash in on the WoW craze and ended up with a  rep as a scrupulous and copycat developer.
