Oh my dear Lord... err General British! To what strange lands hast thou lead thine Avatar?
But seriously, selling this MMO as “Richard Garriots Tabula Rasa” is nothing less but a big swindle, because it has as much to do with everything Garriot is famous for than George Bush with writing a book about Quantum Science. I mean, ok, it HAS his famous ethical dilemmas in some quests, but with a war going on its really little more than a very tiny figleaf. Either way, after fighting my way through the first 10 levels and scanning the regions and areas, I am still quite over the fence what to think about TR.
Tbh, I took the preorder beta only because I felt insanely bored with every other current MMO. After playing SWG and EQ2 for years, especially the latter, I just could not see it anymore. WOW (aka artoon Disneyland) & LOTRO (oh no MORE boars and wolfs!) are just a tad to simplified and generic for my taste and I had enough of staff wiggling Wizards and mysterious Elves – and I wanted a firearm and a technology based MMO again! Something more scifi, instead of magic and swords.
The gameplay felt surprisingly fun. You really get that feeling that there is a war going on around you! Ugly aliens land in evilly red shining ships or are beamed down in groups, trying to hold their keeps or overrun your allies bridges. The only other time I really felt being in a war like that was in the SWG PVP areas when Restuss was new. Save this isn’t PVP. The act is quite good, with all people running and fighting, and its all supported by the NPC soldiers on your side as well, so even when in your particular part of the world aren’t any players atm you still have war going on around you. After a dozen of MMOs where all NPCs are like nailed to the ground and frozen (like Vancrap… err..guard), it was very refreshing to see them run, attack, duck, take cover like you really advanced with an army.
The graphics is alright, while its sure not thrilling, I guess its due to the many things going on in high speed. I cant imagine it with EQ2 or VG graphic details, because… you know how laggy THOSE games are, hardly fit for such a fast paced game.
The point is, after playing 2 hours I always felt I had enough. It was fun, but I never had that feeling of real satisfaction, somehow, nor the same adrenaline rush like in PVP, despite the “show “ of war going on, you soon realize its just that, a show. You can easily avoid war or just keep running, unless by misfortune you really run right through a spawn. Since the crosshatch has an autotarget, which always hits the mob if you keep the pointed in a certain space around the mob, it has been criticized not to be a real First Person Shooter (FPS). I cant quite follow this 100%. It sure is simplified, but the experience shows, most MMO players have little favour for this kind of aim and cover, so I guess to make hitting the enemy a tad easier is a good way to get more people into the boat.
One of the big downsides will definitely be the lack of real PVP. Sure, we get clanwars, but that’s not the same, and it more feels like they added this to say “hey, we have PVP too” just like Turbine added Monsterplay to LOTRO.
TR sure can be fun a short while, but after a few days I had the hamster wheel feeling VERY quickly, which usually takes a much longer time to start. Somehow, it always the same gameplay, and tbh I felt quite exhausted every time. Playing 2 hours TR felt like 8 hours EQ2, mostly because of the very simple and repetitive experience. Its always aim, shoot, sometimes duck behind a sandbag, and that’s all of it. Also the landscape is nice but kinda boring and without any remarkable features, nothing I would put into a 2007 game at all. It could have been good, but atm there is just too little game in the game, too little diversity of things to do and see. I totally miss any kind of social play or roleplay. Unlike in games like EQ2, SWG or WOW you don’t have cities or villages or taverns to meet and greet. You rush into a camp, quickly grab quests, sell stuff and buy ammo and rush away into war. Since war is virtually everywhere, I got the feeling TR felt far too hectic everywhere. Maybe I am getting old, but war is nice and fine, but I also need to feel the contrast in my games to appreciate going into the war. I need cities and civilization where my character lives to value for what I fight, but TR is one big battle field only, its not a place you make house and home, and its not supposed to be. Alas. As such it fills the gap until Pirates of the Burning Sea or Warhammer come. It’s a bit a pity, since we are quite short on scifi MMOs, and it would be a good game if it were free of monthly fee. As it is I guess it will be a small niche game as soon as all the other big MMOs are out, end of this year and early 2008.

Tabula Rasa seems like a nice game. Something fresh and different from most of what is available. Yet, I share the same feelings as you, OP. Especially the part where you described about visible civilization that you could be a part of and interact with. Only if there was Anarchy Online 2... that would really get me off my ongoing vacation away from MMOs.

Graphics 8+ ; It's a MMO so i'm not expecting single player rpg type of graphics, but for its genre is sure looks very good. |

TR is weak. Don't get me wrong its a short term blast, but there is nothing there that will hold the player base for longer than a couple months. This is not to say that some people won't be completely enamoured, they will, a very tiny group of Garriotians will bask in the shallow glory of TR for years to come, of that I have absolutly no doubts. Look no further than Vanguards McQuadians for proof. TR is just lacking too many of the things that actually make an MMO world worth spending time in. While at the same time relying on too many of the crutch norms of current MMOs. There is little character customization, armors and weapons look more or less the same. The quests, such as they are are absolutly nothing anyone who has played an MMO before hasnt seen. There is practically no opportunity at all for players to "make thier mark" on the world. I do fear that the cloning system will do the exact opposite of what is intended. Much like DAoC it will create a situation where longer time players will not interact with new players until those player are up to the same level as the older ones. This means that after the initial rush of new customers, the truly new will be playing solo for a relativly long time, this is never a good thing for a social MMO. The biggest reason that TR will ultimately fail will be because it is a game in which action action action is the only viable play style, my friends I ask you, what is the point of playing an MMO in that case? Failure here will be measured in direct relation to pre-launch hype. Looks to be a year of fallen design Giants. Short term fun, absolutly. Long term enjoyment, its just not there. -Gooney

| And that is why... Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness. |
