I'm really curious about the general knowledge of a WoW subscriber. So im starting this poll to find out what do WoW subscribers actually think about what was the first graphical MMORPG and what is considered first 2nd generation MMORPG (considered by ign.com and gamespot.com). When it hits (and if it hits) 100 votes ill write here the results and also the correct answer :>

Subjective question Do you mean meridian 59/ultima online and the progress to everquest/asheron's call or are you talking about text MUDs? Maybe games like the Gemstones series? or going way back to the BBS days of tradewars?
I think I will go with 'I thought they got the word MMO by flipping over the letters in WoW and moving them around'.

Now, I may be wrong about how you would answer this question, but I would assume you are not including MUDS or BBS. This is the category that I would place Neverwinter Nights, the AOL version. (I played it so I can categorize it anyway I please) |

Two major problems with this question overall; 1 - As most have pointed out, you have completely missed the MUD generation, which is most probably the "first generation". 2 - You have no definition here of what is considered to be 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 25th generation and what defines one from the other??? Without these two factors, the question is meaningless! It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays. |

Yes, because that's where it all comes down to when people play a MMO: You HAVE to know everything about the genre's history before you make the choice which game you're gonna play.

if you want to have a discussion about MMO history, then do it. But it cheapens your post to set up a thinly-veiled poll to show that "I'm smart and WoW-subscribers are noobs." Clearly some posters here do actually want to discuss the progression of MMOs. |

Firstly, that is one point of view and there are many on what is considered to be advances or no in the MMO or other games markets. Secondly, you completely missed "The realm online" and more importantly "meridian 59" (first 3d MMO and possible candidate as second gen) which were both released before Ultima online! It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays. |

OP: With all respect, but "MMORPG generations" are so vaguely defined terms, that there is no right nor wrong answer to your 2nd question - it depends whom you ask and all answers are just as good as are the arguments behind them.
And according to Wikipedia's History of MMORPGs article, first 2nd gen MMORPG is AO, wich is completely missing from your poll. |
