If you've been following the game Tabula Rasa, you probably recognize that female character that they keep using in their promotional material. You know, the redhead with the really intense eyes? Well today, NCsoft has provided us with her back story.

The warmth coming from the embers felt good against her skin. Sarah Morrison was careful not to let the hot coals burst into flames, for anything but a slight glow might give away her position. She had searched for nearly an hour before finding this spot and she would be damned before she was going to go hunting for another one before she was ready. It's not like eating roasted calla root was any better then eating it raw, it was almost as bitter. The fire was more for warmth. Foreas could get pretty cold at night, and the glowing embers gave off just enough heat to chase the chill away.

It was cold the night the Bane attacked, too. A strange frown crept across Sarah's battle hardened face as she thought back to a life that almost seemed like someone else's. She remembered regretting not grabbing a leather jacket before sneaking out of the house that night. She was 19 then, and like most 19 year olds, Sarah was more interested in having fun than arbitrary rules regarding curfews. Just because she was still living under her dad's roof while failing her way through college, just because her three younger brothers had a curfew did not mean her father had a right to limit her freedom. But he tried. He just didn't like her friends, she thought to herself as she slipped through the window, silently creeping along the far wall of the house into the backyard. She had become very skilled at getting out unnoticed, something she had been very proud of at the time.

Not a bad read, but it doesn't do anything for me. When I was a kid, reading about or watching another snot nosed kid like her become a heroin would be cool, but now that I am much older, I prefer my heroes to be older as well. It just isn't fun reading about heroes that are 19 yrs old anymore. Maybe I am getting too old for these sorts of things. =(

Instead of a snot nosed brat being the hero, I would have rather seen the father become the hero after the Bane destroyed his family. The father first lost his wife a while back, now the Bane came and took his family. The father becomes enraged, joins the resistance, and becomes something bad ass like the punisher. These 17-19 yr old kid heroes in Final Fantasy type games and this game doesn't do anything for me. Can you imagine being a 40 yr old gamer (I'm not 40) and having to answer to that 19yr old snot nosed kid that just before the bane attacked could only think about herself and what is cool? <shudders>

That would make her what ?  Around 23 or 25 ?

When it comes to war I have only ever seen (with my own two eyes) a handful of men (No women in the job I was in) older than 28 who I would completely consider hero's.

Most of the folks who are doing the heroic stuff are just kids or, as JK-Kanosi likes to put it, Snot nosed brats.

At 23 I can sort of relate to her character.  Having been in a war myself.  I would think that a few older folks could relate to her as well.  You were all kids once, with dreams and tragedies (whether great or petty).  Besides shes just one character.  The character you create can have any backstory you want.

Yeah, I think there are more. In the video, there is more than just her, but they are using her in all of their media. I don't know, like I said, maybe I am just too old for games. Games seem to be geared more towards teenagers with their heroes and stuff. Either way, the story is really interesting and I was pumped to play the game until all the reviews started pouring out. I guess I'll be waiting until the next Sci-Fi game. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay looks fun, but others said it was fun too. Just that is gets old and has no depth. Just about every review confirmed this.

Well.  I was able to attain the rank of Sergeant in the Marines in 4 years.  Its not hard but it usually doesn't happen for most folks.  I'd say 4 to 6 years to reach the rank Sergean is realistic.

I was a Corporal in the Marine Corps, a machine-gun team leader when I was in Iraq. I was 22 then. People in the military with responsibility have to grow up quick, so it's not the same as an ordinary 22 yr old. Besides, I was more referring to the story at hand...not her future accomplishments. I never snuck out at night, think only about myself and what was "cool" when I lived under my parents roof. I worked full time, kept a GPA of 3.0 and above and prepared myself for a career in the Marine Corps. I wanted to become an officer, but I didn't know my options and after telling my recruiter my goal was to become an officer, he really didn't help me in that area. Instead, he got me hyped up about being in Security Forces and the Infantry. Security Forces was fun, because I got to do CQB, but the Infantry flat out sucked. The infantry reminded me of high school clicks. People were really immature in the infantry and you had to be in the cool crowd to get ahead. I was married and had a kid at the time. I could careless about being cool in the Infantry. Sorry, I just have no respect for people who conform to the majority just to be cool, hence the snot nosed kid reference.

As far as she could tell, that life and the people who were in it were gone forever. Today, not even two years later, Sarah Morrison was a Sergeant in the AFS, on her way to infiltrate a Bane outpost.

But yeah, the story is meh.  I'd love more detail to the carnage the Bane left behind and her experience in being transferred into another world.  This story's like the game:  Bland, unpolished and lacking depth.  RG's cashing a paycheck and has lost touch.  How long has this game been in development and the best he can do is a half-assed WoW?

The problem is no one really cares about this generic character, just like no one will care about TR.  I'm really disappointed in TR, Garriott spent the past seven years doing what exactly?  The game could have had so much more, but after over a half decade of development time, and you can't use the Mechs or the Flyers, that  might be excusable if  we were giving a a mission system that made people actually give a damn about the Lore,  I can't believe this is the same guy that gave us UO.

That seems to be the feeling going around. And I have to say that I feel much the same.

Great, more attempts by developers to use their games as a vehicle for pursuing writing careers. The interviews I've heard from the devs makes the game sound like there's going to be a lot of it in TR. 

I'm less impressed with TR everytime I see this form of 'story-telling' rearing up in it.  If I want to read a book, I will read a book by an author who got published for his writing skills.   I don't play ideo games for this, the game should tell the story itself.

I definitely will remember the name Sarah Morrison. This was one of the questions the community manager, CuppaJoe, asked in an interview for a beta slot. Not a lot of info on google, unfortunately.

Interesting read, I skimmed through it. Good luck to NCSoft and DG on this title.

Am I the only one who thinks she looks like she was modeled after Milla Jovovich?

Before you listen to the bad comments about the game.  Go drop $5 for preorder, try the beta and then make your decision.  You can always get your $5 back.  There will never be a perfect game.

Eeew no she totally doesn't look like Milla Jojovich.

Anyway, I didn't feel the story coming through my playtime with the game. I'm only a few hours into it, but still.

This whole backstory feels separate from the actual game.

And you trust reviews rather than try something for yourself? I've read countless reviews saying it was this and that, reviews by other people who don't know what I do and don't like in a game. I personally love the game and no review could change my mind. It's what I've been looking for in a game for a long time. It's a new game with countless possibilities and in time it'll be even greater. That's just my take on the subject of not trying something for yourself. Everyone knows that the most vocal people on forums are people who hate the game because those of us that enjoy it are too busy playing it ;) Try it out, you might be surprised.

 

I never trust a review, but a group of them, from professional and amatuer beta players?  Sure, especially if I can't get a trial.  I've been in the beta for a while although time constraints have held me back from doing much more than the beginner missions and going to the first zone real zone, the woods.  What I have played hasn't given me all that much motivation to continue playing though.

I certainly wouldn't recommend spending 5 dollars or loaning 5 dollars to gamestop to try it though....

I on the other hand WOULD recommend spending $5 and try it. So as they say, "Different strokes for different folks."
