Servers cost money to maintain. Support crew costs money. Development costs money. Guildwars manages to run for free because it's not a "true" MMORPG (They even admit to this themselves). The instancing reduces the server load MASSIVELY. It's basically a pretty Diablo 2 in terms of how the game is hosted. Most of the load is client-side. Additionally, GW's expansions pay the upkeep cost. Not to mention GW doesn't have anywhere near the support staff that WoW does.
Besides, they're in this to make money. Why would they want to lose 8,000,000*$15/month? |

If they stop charging a monthly fee, they might as well shut the whole thing down and walk away. It is so hard to turn a profit in the MMO sector, they would have to be crazy to severely cut their revenue just to make a bunch of unemployed teenagers happy. |

People who pay for play was a stupid idea and basically you are losing money, first you pay for the game second you pay for the monthly fee and the third and final point that i'm going to make out is the phone bill and people who pay to play online games are stupid. |

I simply have to reply to this brash logic... This always makes me chuckle. People complain about the $14.99 per month as excessive to play a game they might invest 3+ hours a day to. Let’s do some math, hm? Let’s take a casual gamer in WoW who plays…oh…lets say 2 hours a day. My math says they play approximately 14 hours a week then. Let’s take that times 4 then. Well, that’s 56 hours a month. (I won’t state the irony of people willing to dedicate more hours to a game then to a “normal” job of 40 hours to pay for said “addiction”.) Now, 14.99 divided by 56 hours a month is about .27 and hour. Conversely, let’s say you played WoW a whole year. 14.99 * 12 = 179.88. If one was not playing a game like WoW (or EQ2, or DDO, or LoTRO, etc.) they might buy an average over 6 single player games a year; each costing about $49.99 each. (Let’s not even talk about the sales tax on top of it. Remember, WoW is sold in monthly allotments with NO taxing) Anyway, 6 * 49.99 is 299.94. So, by playing a MMO that charges 14.99 a month, you are actually saving $120.06 a year. (Again, I’ll leave out the average of 7% sales tax. Your saving is actually much more when it’s factored in). This is due to the fact that you are in fact playing but one game most of the time and not needing to buy another game when a single player game is completed. To summarize, if you think that $14.99 is too much to play a game that in the end saves you almost $120 a year…well…you might want to study harder in your economics class. Sheesh…$14.99 is cheaper then a night at the movies with a date. Rock on WoW, EQ2, etc. You guys give “most” of us hours and hours of entertainment for the mere cost of about $3.74 an hour. Brilliant! Disclaimer: These numbers are just average numbers. It's meant to illustrate a point only. Please reserve flames for someone who will actually feel a need to defend themselves against people who think $14.99 a month for any quality game is robbery.
Edit for dividing hours by cost instead of cost by hours. |

Not sure exactly how you are doing your math but 56 hours at 14.99 is about 27 cents a hour.

Drat, you are correct. I got distracted somewhere in there while writing and did 56/14.99 instead of 14.99/56. Do forgive. The point is the same though. (And actually, the cost would be much lower then my backwards math would lead to believe). |

And in regards to the phone bill... I just discovered a new technology.. its called broadband. |

How would the elimination of the fee make you enjoy the game more? Is you mommy, your wife, significant other or somebody else giving you grief about it? What then would the developer use to fund expansions and further development. How would they pay for the server operation and maintanance? Please dont say item mall. Those words offend the ears of western players who loath the idea of the un equal play field that occurs when there are haves and have nots based on item purchases rather than time played, skill, or any number of factors that make monthly fee games so much better in general than their item mall counterparts. |

Just wait for this kid to grow up. I wish I would be able to see the face of his landlord or electric company when he tries to say that those should be free as well. |
