...of Warcraft. On Wednesday morning, Managing Editor Jon Wood attending the opening keynote address at the Austin Game Developers Conference, where Blizzard co-founder and president Mike Morhaime discussed the secrets of Blizzards success.

Day one of the Austin Game Developers Conference kicked off with a keynote speech from Mike Morhaime, the President and Co-Founder of Blizzard. If you've been living under a rock in the MMO world for the last few years, Blizzard is the company that brought World of Warcraft to the market, and paved the way for an expansion in the MMORPG industry.

"Our industry is young, and moving fast."

Morhaime led off by talking about the major leaps that have been made by way of communication in the 20th century.

The world has become a smaller place," he said. He's right. Online communication has made it possible for people who may never have had the opportunity to communicate with one another to meet, share ideas and become friends. Online games were a logical consequence of that change.

Love or Hate WoW, if more games companies not only listened to these 10 points but actually followed through on them like Blizzard, there were be far, far less wretched games on the market - both console and PC.

Blizzard has learned the important lesson of ignoring the hardcore whiners who cry out for games that do everything and the kitchen sink while only playing on the highest-end systems, as though that will someone make them good.

Now if only more companies would learn to do the same - unfortunately many of them are being RUN by the same type of hardcore whiner who thinks that unrealistic, irrational ideas and cutting edge technology is all it takes to make a good game.

Some of the recent disasters we've seen have weeded out a few of these types, but there are sitll many of them calling the shots in gaming companies.   And no matter how many times you tell them,  they'll never be able to figure out why their games don't sell like a Blizzard product.

I don't play WoW anymore, but all of the advice he gives is golden! All MMO developers should listen and take note.

Inconceivable!

I have to admit that I always bought the blizzard games without reading a review, I bought Diablo II and the later games on release date simply because I was pretty sure they would be fun. It all started with warcraft I on a 386 sx for me :)

Although I've stopped playing wow I still think it's a fun & quality game and it kept me entertained for a long time.

Brad McQuaid was a prime example of that, imo.

And this one:
Morhaime urged potential developers to make sure that they don't run headlong into things and said that you should build on your successes, gain expertise and then get more ambitious.
"WoW was not our first game," he reminded us.

Vanguard was Sigil's first game. Altough BMQ was experienced in making games, and probably most of the team. It takes time and experience as a company on how to make games and provide quality in that. Sigil was a classic example of overreaching, too many idea's but no idea of how to actually carry them out.

Which is why its worth looking at Bioware's MMORPG. Bioware have the same reputation as Blizzard in producing good quality games, with every game they've made being great.

QFT Bud.

Everyone always says how "Oh, 'so-and-so' is only successful because they're big name, have tons of money, and don't have to do 'this' or 'that' like company 'b' over here".

Seriously people: Why do you think those companies got big name?

'If somethings worth doing, it's worth doing it right'

Keep that kind of philosophy, and you can't go wrong. Props to Blizzard for giving everyone a nudge in the "Hate us, but love how we always do things right" direction.
