You also can't end up with three sided battles at the moment.

In my opinion here is the difference between PvP and RvR. In the heat of the battle suddenly realm A makes a pact with B to fight the superior realm C.

Would be nice, if something like this is implemented in game.

While interesting, it could break the gameplay mechanics quite substantially as all it would take is a pact between a couple large guilds to substantially alter server-wide mechanics so it is understandable why it isn't in the game.

It all sounds great, but I have never liked instances, they make the worlds seem empty, and if theres a battle going on next to you. But I still can't wait for the game.

I thought it would only be as instanced as Voyage Century, but its actually way more instanced than that.  It's just a boring instanced mission grind, with nothing much to look forward to, aside from the PvP, which probably won't even be a big deal.  I'm sorry to say, this game will disappoint lots of people.  I predict a major flop, that is, if they ever manage to get it off the ground :(

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I don't know how people keep coming up with these ideas that the instances are bad or good as the game hasn't even been published yet.  Instancing really only affects player to player interaction and the performance of the game.  Can the game just run in an instance mode all the time?  I suppose so, but the hardware is probably what makes it difficult.  In order to sustain hundreds or even thousands of users in a single world would cause them to have to cut down the graphics and game mechanics.   The polygons on the ships, for instance.

On the other hand, you have the player interaction.  Without know what it will be like to ACTUALLY play the game with hundreds or thousands of people, how do you know it will be boring?  The fact that the battles are instanced adds to the realism of the game since it has been noted that pvp battles can be quite long.  You simply are not going to have ships traveling by in the much faster world map and be able to participate in your battle (exceptions here would likely be if you are grouped with them or within a certain distance when the fighting starts).

This isn't WoW or some other fantasy game where people can just duke it out in the middle of nowhere and possibly receive help from a friendly player walking along.

As to instancing all the time?  This isn't like eve where you simply "jump" from one gate to the next.  There is no warp.  There aren't any afterburners....  The fact that the Caribbean in the world map can be transversed in 30 minutes doesn't really mean that it would be that simple.  If you go onto the POTBS website and look in the devlogs under port contention, there is a map showing you how big the contention spaces are.  Considering there will be up to 12 points of contention across the map, it's possible you won't be able to make a straight shot from one part of the Caribbean to another and avoid battle.  Having Key West in contention supposedly make the entire  Straits of Florida a PVP zone, blocking off easy access through there and forcing people to have to go all the way around Cuba (easily adding 20 minutes onto your navigation if you are planning on going from the Bahamas to Havana).

Go to the burningsea.com website and look under Developer Logs, then look at "PVP and Conquest Systems" for more information.

Finally, is it going to be like Guild Wars?  Isolated instances between travel?  No.  I think that POTBS is aiming for a happy medium.  I really think open beta is going to answer most of the questions that keep coming up and until then, focusing on something that you haven't experienced in the way it is meant to be experienced is fairly pointless, even if you played the demo at some Con.

Question:  Can you de-mast your target?  If so there is your solution to slow combat....Does the game engine take into concideration round shot, double shot, canister, or chain shot?  What about splinters the size of your arm?

Personal combat...can I kick them in the balls?  Poke the hilt of my sword into their eyes?  Call their mother a two bit whore and then prove it?

What about fire?  Wooden ships burn...

Sombody said they did good for duplication of  that era, just how good did they do?

We have Heavy Round, Bronze Round (does more damage), Stone Round (does less damage, but cheap), Star Shot, Bar Shot, Chain Shot, Canister Shot, and Grape Shot.   Rounds do mostly hull damage with some mast and crew, Star, Bar, and Chain do mostly mast/rigging damage with some hull and crew, and Canister and Grape do mostly crew.  All have different ranges of effectiveness.  Oh, and there are swivel canons too, with a large angle of fire but a short range, for when you are preparing to board.

We don't have kicking them in the balls, but the Dirty Fighting school of combat includes elbows to the nose, foot stomps, slashing low to affect their mobility, etc.  Fencing is more the elegant Epee type of swordplay, and Florentine is two handed with a sword in one hand and  a dagger/shortsword in the other.   You can also have an offhand pistol, but that's really only useful as an opener as reload times were long.  We have plans to add a "hook" school of fighting for if you have a hook on one hand, but haven't gotten that in yet (and won't before release).

We don't currently have burning ships and flaming shot.  On the idea list, but a lot of extra work.

We also don't have scurvy :)  There's a limit to how accurate we *want* to be.

I had a chance to play the beta. I wasn't impressed to be honest. IMO this game will biff once it comes out in a few short months. The control of the ships is decent, but the combat system is like Sid Meyers pirates on stereoids. And we all know how sid meyers pirates played.... But again thats just my opinion. I've like games that everyone else has hated b4, so I'm sure this will appeal to a base of players.

VC has ramming and greek fire throwers, with point-and-click maneuvering.

PotBS only has cannons, but with location specific armor (front, back, left, right) with keyboard maneuvering.

Aside from that, they look like they'll be pretty similar to me.

You just need ta wait till the game is fully released... I still don't know everything about the gameplay on this game... still trying to figure it out... But overall i really hope this is a good game.. I also would like to know how big the world is and slow combat.. im fine with that..

But how the game fully works.. I would like to know that... and hopefully it comes out soon enough... Im all for patience but takeing forever .. just ain't my thing... but i'm sure that the designers are doing fine right now... They're doing awesome so far.. i've not tested the game but i can asume that a game like this will sucseed.

I just wanted to say tat Hattrix obviously hasn't got a clue about any MMORPG except for this one, He said Aion was just another fantasy MMO based on L2 and thats not true in fact it has no grinding quests and you can fly and It's not an MMOG like wow or L2 its an MMORPG you CAN actually affect the game server and it's far more better than he thinks! sorry, but he needs to get information!

L2?  HUH?

Show me where I said that. I don't even know what L2 is? I think you are mistaken. Get it right, skippy and come back when you have a clue.

Here's what I DID say .....

Eh...same old fantasy cr@p. All that I've read and seen doesn't make me think it'll be any more than just OK. I give it a 5.....EDITED to a 4 because there are too many Aion fanboiz hyping this as the be-all-end-all of MMOs. Fools.

I stand by what I said.

Since PotBS takes a step away from a lot of the mmorpgs we see today, I think theres definitely going to be an adjustment period which includes getting used to the combat pace.    It worries me a little, but I feel like most interested gamers will have the patience and commitment to adjust.    It might even make for a more mature community.

I also enjoy more strategic thinking and a little less twichy gameplay, the slow but graphicly stimulating ship combat is what I was hopeing for.

Well we all have different taste. Personally I long for slower, more strategic playing with tactical choices where skill (hopefully) is more important than uber-gear and grind time. Skill based avatar combat and skill based ship combat, what more can you ask for? Also the graphics look excellent if you ask me. Participating in a PvP 25 ship harbour competition battle with previous guild strategy talks sound like a wet dream for me. I have read a lot about Napoleonic (a bit later I know but still very similar) Naval warfare and this seems to go a long bit towards simulating this. Add player controlled economy to this and It's by far the most promising game out there. If I could pay extra to keep any bunnyhoping, leet, kids that write "lol" etc out of the game everything would be perfect. I expect most of the unpleasant elements of other games will not enjoy this game and I so look forward to not playing with them.

Eagerly looking forward to open beta/release!

I read somewhere a while ago, that the 25vs25 port battles will be fought by randomly picked people, not by whole guilds/societies. Not sure if this is still correct, but it would be a realm>guild decision.

It's random from the pool of folks who have contention points. The more points you have, the better chance you have to get in. I'm not a giant fan of it, but an organized guild who works together to gain unrest up the wazoo will fill a majority of the spots.
