I have recently been getting back into the FPS genre again, after a while on MMOs, and have been blown away by how great they have become - whether in single player or online multiplayer - in terms of sheer thrill and pacey story-telling. I really enjoyed my MMO experience, but after the roller coaster ride of the current generation of FPS, I feel most MMOs feel bland by comparison. I also find the general camera view of MMOs a little distancing... I realise I could play in first person, or just behind first person (a la resident evil 4), but that puts you at a serious disadvantage. I would love a game where everyone played in that first or near first person equally (like an FPS), making an even playing field and a more visceral experience. People may respond - well, go play an FPS then. But I do like the sense of community offered by an MMO, and the development of a persistent character over time. An unfolding narrative that you can share with friends, or through brief encounters with random travellers, who you don't see for a while, then bump into twenty levels later and say hey! I remember you! We did x y or z together. Can anyone think of a current MMO, or one in development, that would work for me? Thanks.

Hmm - interesting. It's odd, though - I have almost never heard this game discussed. Why is that? |

Planetside. One of the games out of the Battlefield series could probably help, as well. There's Huxley, which is probably vaporware, or Tabula Rusa, which is likely not. They'll be released soon, I think.

Huxley which is probably gonna be released in 2008. And Tabula Rasa is a MMORPG not a MMOFPS. |

There is The Chronicles of Spellborn (www.tcos.com) and Fallen Eearth (www.fallenearth.com) which got a kind of FPS system in them. They are 3rd person view, but you need to aim to hit the enemy. I doubt it will have the same feeling like other regular FPS games, but they do use a FPS system :> Fallen earth you use guns etc while TCoS is more of a magic combat style. |

BF: 2142 rocks, your soldier is persistent with unlocks badges, ribbons and pins you level up by gaining rank. you can play as the commander and gameplay becomes like an online RTS but the soldiers and vehicles are real players. You have Titan mode where as the commander you command the Titan, or as a soldier you must defend it or attack the enemy Titan. All this for no monthly fee, so your not paying DEVs to eat pizza and watch Baywatch. The MMO Genre stinks right now, it is slow and tedious crap based around grinding npcs. PvP is a button mashing competition using a built in aimbot, and they have the cheek to charge you every month for this trash! The only MMOFPS are Planetside and WW2online, I haven't tried Planetside but have tried WW2online. The trouble with WW2online is that it takes too long to get to your objective (15-30 mins), then you get one shotted and have to do the journey all over again. I say go with BF: 2142 as it is pure action where you can kick butt and take names (you get the enemies dogtags if you knife him).

F.E.A.R combat. It's a great free multiplayer fps. You will need 512mb+, 2gb won't cause lag though. You got to download the client and sign up for the cd-key. www.joinfear.com |

WW2 online: Battleground Europe is a great game that has been upgraded since most have these people have probably played. It is insanely difficult, but once you start getting better its a great feeling to know that most of your friends couldnt handle it. It has a small player base but the community is the best Ive seen in any game and CRS really gets to know their customers. You gain rank and eventually unlock new equipment to use, you can also join the High command and get promoted by your fellow superior officers. It also gives a crazy rush in the middle of combat, never experienced anything like it in any other game. |

Little cause for optimism with Huxley. Innovation is not in the blood of the development culture over there. Worth a keen eye, though, since if by some fate it does surprise, it has a lot of potential. |
