Woo! Here we come, Elder Scrolls Online!

Don't take my word for it, though. Here's the press release:

August 1, 2007 (Rockville, MD) – ZeniMax Media Inc., parent company of Bethesda Softworks, announced today the creation of ZeniMax Online Studios. The division will be headed by Matt Firor, a well-known expert in the field of online gaming, and will focus on the Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) market segment.

Firor was one of the founders of Mythic Entertainment, where he worked for over 10 years on MMO titles. At Mythic he was the producer of the worldwide #1 smash hit Dark Age of Camelot, a MMORPG considered one of the most influential online games of all time. When he left Mythic in 2006, Firor was responsible for all development projects at the company. For the past year, he has been a consultant in the online gaming industry, advising leading publishers interested in entering the online market.

“This could not be a more perfect opportunity for me,” said Matt. “I am extremely impressed with ZeniMax and Bethesda Softworks management – their development philosophy closely matches my own, with an emphasis on quality, innovation, and craftsmanship. I am eager to get back to what I love – the development of cutting edge MMOG titles.”

“We are excited about the opportunities we have in the online gaming space and felt that Matt is the perfect person to lead this effort,” said James Leder, COO of ZeniMax Media. There are relatively few people who have the actual experience and knowledge that comes from having created a successful MMO, and Matt is the real deal. We feel fortunate to have him join our group.”

Firor is a graduate of George Washington University and has worked in the gaming industry for 17 years. He has lectured at the University of Virginia and Massachusetts Institute of Technology on game development topics, and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. Firor has written articles for Game Developer Magazine and was a regular columnist covering online game development for the Korean gaming magazine “Onplayer”.

Hope it won't be as boring and pointless as Morrowind or Oblivion.

Word

I liked both games, but could never get into them the way I could get into something like Final Fantasy or KOTOR

Obviously MMOs are different then single player RPGs, you don't have the freedom to really create a single player story driven experience, but Morrowind/Oblivion were single player but barely had a story driven experience lol.

eh, just my 2 cents

I don't think this is necessarily confirmation of Elder Scrolls Online.  Bethesda is very much an autonomous part of Zenimax, and I think the fact that this is a completely new division headed up by a man that has never worked on an Elder Scrolls title speaks loudly.  And it isn't "Bethesda Online Studios", it's "Zenimax Online Studios".  Zenimax is much more than just TES.

If anything I think this is a pre-emptive move for when Zenimax gets the Fallout MMO rights back from Interplay.  Or, even more likely, this will be something completely new.

Although if this were TES: Online, I would know Bethesda are a bunch of lying dillweeds (not that I didn't already know that).  They've claimed repeatedly over the years that TES is a single-player series and that they wouldn't move it to the world of MMOs.

Will it be a 1st person view fantasy MMO? Will be interesting to see how it goes. I cannot imagine getting so much detail and immersion into a massive format but who knows in the next 5-7 years? Our computers with Vista will be called outdated and our video cards will likely be in landfills by the time this game will be ready for beta.

Then I suppose 'sandbox' isn't your thing, eh.  Personally I love them.

Oh, great, if this is an actual TES MMO, it'll be another giant turd on Bethesda's part. =/

Sounds very nice to me since I loved Morrowind and Oblivion, the only sad thing is that if they get started today it will probably take 5 years until the game is released.

Oh, well.

Nostalgia is bad.

I suggested this on an Elder Scrolls site last year and was told it would never happen! It wouldn't work, apparently.

It's good as a single player game.  A multiplayer version would likely be utterly messed up.

Or maybe, Interplay can't find anyone to fund their Fallout MMO efforts so Bethesda offered to do it as a natural follow up to their upcoming Fallout 3 release.

Starting the rumor here first.....

The reason I think that elder scroll games were good in the first place were because it was single player, but also a big RPG. The vastness and great looks of oblivion were amazing, but now if this is true...all I can imagine is "Selling beginner swords!!!" and "Buying rare items!!" The nice serenity of the game will be lost...

"At Mythic he was the producer of the worldwide #1 smash hit Dark Age of Camelot"

The game will be good, because obviously hes from another world, because in this world, DAOC is far from #1.

Well, back in the day, it was the # 1 favorite of PVP players here in the west......though it never did real well in Asia.

in theory it would be awsome

but you know that when they made it they would just take everquest/WoW, change the skins, add one new feature and hype that feature beyond belief

thats how almost all games are these days sadly

makes me wonder why there arent any UO clones, that would be heavenly
