Is it not the same map you see in tolkein's books? Can I go and stand at the foot of the black gate, or hang out with ettins in the old forest or climb the tower of Saruman? Seems like alot of stuff isnt in there...

Mordor isn't in the game yet. There are no ettins in the old forest (altho there are giants roaming around) .. just a ton of Huorns... Isengarde or Sauruman's tower (Orthanc) is located NW of Rohan which isn't in the game yet. The areas in the game right now is the region of Eriador (from Evendim at the north all the way to the Misty mountains). The next patch (book 10) will add the areas of Annuminas the old capital city of Arnor. The developers hinted they will be adding the Mines of Moria in future patches.

I would suspect that over time more and more regions will be added, so yes eventually the entire middle earth will be in game.
