Public forums. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious. |

From those videos i'm still not quite sure i'm pleased with the animations... especially with walking... they seem a bit stiff... slow if you will.. and the attack motions are also a little slow in most cases... now with the magic (like in "Attack of the Yeti" ... kinda lame.. no shooting bolts or indication of you firing the cast/spell... kinda looks bare... but the game still holds my interest otherwise.

The animations seemed a bit funny to me. That would not be a gamebreaker by any means, I currently play LoTRO and my hobbit looks like he is dire need of a restroom when he runs. I was just hoping for better is all. I realize at this stage of beta there is still a lot of polishing left to do, and the final product will hopefully be much better. I like the world graphics , very rich and colorful. Not nuts about the way the "paper doll" and inventory came out from the side though. |

These clips are definitely dissapointing. I would still like to see some high level pvp combat . So far the combat looks really boring and unappealing to me. This is still on of the games I'm checkin for, but now its on the bottom of the list. |

Most of the combat in those clips are from people who have just for the first time gotten their hands on the game. It's definitely not the best vids out there.
The Devs have mentioned that there is still work to go on animations. Like there is no 'casting' animation yet. They are also changing quite a few up. The 'dagger' holding animation for mage classes is changing for example. Also apparently where they were set up was less then optimal in terms of 'lag.' There was more then normal, and thats why some mobs seemed to animate passed being 'dead.' Last those times when the player would be swinging his weapon after a mob died, thats a 'combo' animation firing. There is no auto-attack remember, so if your character is 1/2 way through a 3-swing combo and the mob dies, you finish the animation, not just auto-switch to 'non-combat' mode. ;)
Oh and to the dude that is 'canceling his pre-order' cause the these vids aren't so hot. Perhaps you should take a bigger look at the game instead of just these few admittedly bad movies of lvl 5 characters using their newbie skills with a broken oar in an unfinished game. If you decide that the game isn't worth your time because you have to kill mobs at level 5.. so be it. |

On the Chronicles of Spellborn forum some kiddo came along claiming that AoC was superior lookiing to TCoS. Then someone else posted a link to one of the videos. O boy. The action looks clunky in an old fashioned way. Not at all what one would expect of a modern game, but then again this is only beta. But TCoS in beta is already much better looking. Makes you wonder whether this game is going to be released a bit too soon and needs more polishing. |

Name me one MMOG that was in beta, and you saw a movie of players who had never touched the game before, in a battle, at level 1-5, using pieces of wood, and said 'DAMN the combat looks amazing!' You'll notice that they have no special abilities yet, no combos to use, just strait 'raw' melee. The animations need some work and they've told us that they aren't complete and unpolished. Seriously, give a game more of a chance then 2 minutes worth of video and absolutely no clue about how the actual game works, let alone anything about it's plethora of innovative features.

Originally posted by Fion I just did, but that is beside the point. The point is that character movement needs (an will get) a lot of polishing. From what I have seen they will need all the time available to get that done in time. |

Your actually going to say that Spellborns animations are better? I haven't seen anything real recent form them, but from what I have seen, you must be joking.
First of all, in Spellborn, like most MMOGs, it's really easy for sword swings to look all smooth and 'connected' as once an attack has been animated, it continues in it's loop until you select another attack, what ever. What you must remember is that in Age of Conan, the combat is 100% real time and player controlled. You don't trigger an attack animation arc by clicking on an enemy to fight, you must make each individual swing manually, with the Q, 1, 2, 3, E keys, or by clicking the button in the UI for that sword swing. For this reason, ESPECIALLY at low level, where you have no combo moves, (hitting keys in a certain order to get a special effect,) all you have are those 5 angles of attack. So with these newbies playing level 5 characters (though in a few of the movies they do their first combo, where they swirl around and bring the weapon down in an arc,) are just swinging the weapon in a single direction, then swinging in another. This means that in AoC there are hundreds of animations involved in combat, and probably one of the reasons they have a motion capture studio in their basement.
That said, they do still need to work on the animations. But remember it's a hell of a lot easier to have a static, 'same every time' attack animation look more smooth and flowing then different ones for each different individual stroke, etc.

Wow now that I actually see the real live combat i must say i dont really like it too much. It looks boring and a little bit sloppy. Not really looking forward to this at all at this point... And it's a shame cuz the game is fairly close to release. |

I love how so many people judge a games content and combat system by watching 30 seconds of beta footage that features level 5 newbies fighting with no special moves or combos to use. Just strait Q, 1, 2, 3, E. |

What's up with the MOB AI? Where's the challenge? I'm sick of this whole 'I'll just stand here and guard this blade of grass while you kill my friend" bullshit. |

Originally posted by Fion Seriously! Guys, you are your own worst enemies. I've come to the conclusion that game companies shouldn't even have betas until the game is supposed to go live and they just need a stress test. let the game actually come out. Then make your decision. As far as the combat goes, it seems to me that it is "slow" because they are hefting large metal swords. These are large hunks of metal, not finely tuned katanas. The fighting looks fine to me. |
