FFXI as a button masher?----Not even close^^  It is the furthest thing from it and a thoroughly engrossing mmo!

FFXI is unlike most of the "softer" mmos out there today.   It forces you to work for your accomplishments, and work together with other people.  I started playing the day it was released for ps2 with the hard drive and everything.....played for two years and then quit for WOW and GW, COH and EVE.   However, those game became incredibly boring as the story and mythos for them was thin and seemed contrived just to keep you paying for the game.

Not saying that FFXI isn't run as part of a business plan (what mmo isn't) ^^ but square created a game with a deep, fascinating story that can hold it's own amongst  the Final Fantasy series.

The slow part that the EB dude was prob referring to was the partying......but it's a small annoyance.
If you played EVE for a while then I think you'd enjoy ffxi....it's not a carebear mmo like wow.....so you'll still be challenged like you were in EVE.
Square has also been doing a lot of work on keeping the RMT and other silliness from killing the game and I think it's better than ever.
I came back to the game a few months ago for the third time, and have already found new fun people to party with even though most of my old friends are long gone.  And the best thing i found was how helpful the majority of the population is.

I would highly recommend picking up the Vana'diel Collection 2007 which contains all the expansions for like 20 bux and give it a whirl!  You get 30 days free and I think you'll enjoy it.  If you need any help or any other info...just pm me on here or send me a tell or message ingame.   I play on the Remora server under the name Eoin.  We've got a great linkshell (like a corporation) and love meeting new players!  Even after being out for 5 years......FFXI still reigns as one of the best mmos created! (in fact, the only one I really enjoyed besides FFXI was EVE!)

GOOD LUCK!! AND HOPE TO SEE YOU IN VANA'DIEL!!

it isn;t a great game bt it isn;t a bad game either, to me it is a game that you have to suited for. I enjoyed it when it came out but got tired of the combat system and the harsh death system. I was planning on returning to it but so many other games have been released that i have have never been able to get back into it.

The only advice i can give you is to try and see for yourself since it is a game that takes a special taste to enjoy.

Yep.. the "it's too slow" complaint.

Basically, what people mean when they say that is this:

"I can't get to level cap/end-game within a time period that I'd like, playing for ## hours every day, so it's too slow".

Saying it's too slow as a generalization is meaningless, because the idea of "slow" is subjective. I happen to think FFXI is paced just right. I don't *want* a game that I can race through almost in spite of my efforts not to - ie. WoW and a few of the other so-called "casual-friendly" MMOs.

FFXI is one of the few MMOs left that doesn't hold your hand, that does provide a real challenge and that does - gasp - actually take the "multiplayer" part seriously. I have to chuckle every time I see someone complain about a multi-player game not being soloable enough. It's like going into a motorcycle dealership and complaining that all the bikes only have two wheels. It makes no sense to me.

The amount of content in the game is massive. It's an incredibly deep game with tons to do - and SE adds more on a regular basis. Look through FFXI's forums and you'll notice a very stark lack of a certain type of post that is rampant in many of the newer "casual friendly" MMOs.. That is, "I got to end-game and now there's nothing to do! Where's all the content?!". I know of people who've gotten through everything they *want* to in the game and simply can't find anything else that interests them. But I never hear people complaining about a lack of content, or of things to do overall. This is partially because the game is so vast in the first place. But it's also because, unlike those casual-friendly games, the game is actually a challenge and you can't simply race through it all. I know several people who've been there the 4 years since the NA launch, have gotten several jobs to 75, leveled a few crafts, done their share of FFXI's raid-type content... and they are *still* finding things to do.

FFXI is funny, in a very deceiving way. Its depth is so unapparent at the beginning of the game. It seems extremely simple. The battle system is fairly simple. You can solo the mobs up to level 10 or so easily - in fact they're that way by design, to allow new players to get used to the game overall without throwing too much at them at once. However, do some research on the game, read some threads - especially job-specific ones.. Or listen to some episodes of limitbreakradio, listen to their guests talk about a given job, or some other aspect of FFXI in depth... and you will have an idea of just how deep this game really is. The point is.. don't let the seeming lack of depth at the beginning affect your impression of the game overall. The "massive" in MMORPG is well represented when it comes to FFXI. One only needs the time and desire to experience it.

FFXI was the best MMO i ever played. The only problem is that is very time consuming and I don't have the time to play it anymore... =(    No Button mashing and alot of staragy is involved.

I buy the game at it release.

My computer back then was able to create account and character, unable to play...so I cancel for until I upgrade my computer.

I try to log back in, since I never play, my account was completely, and totally deleted.  I was unable to restart anything, the code was wasted.  So even if I did purchase the game and NEVER play it, the answer I got was that I need to purchase it anew.

If you created the account, it's still there.  How long ago did you do this? Did you wait 2 years?  If so, then you get what you deserve.

Ok playing , would be nice if it could guide you a bit more. Im lost already, guess it will take a bit to find out what is what. And is there any way to get the game to look better? its very choppy, i usually have all games max out in the video side. Controls seem to be a pain, and keyboard lay is not very good. Guess it was more for console anyway.

Anyone ave any ideas on making it look better? with settings in game or is it more of the window settings?

 never mind i found it,

Can any one sugest a race and job for a noob that would be easy to learn the system?

Hey there...

I'll tackle each of your concerns here one at a time.

First, as for the game guiding you more... It won't. FFXI, like all FF games, relies heavily on discovery and exploration... Being a MMO, interaction with other players is also very important, and SE takes that aspect very seriously. You'll find many things in FF are geared toward cooperating with others. It's one of the few MMOs out there that doesn't guide the player along, but leaves it up to them to discover and experience things for themselves This is one thing that I find those who stick with FFXI most enjoy about it. It's also one aspect that keep people coming back - I know it is in my case. It *is* a challenge - from level 1 until you decide to stop playing. It's overwhelming at the start, yes, but that's why the community in FFXI is so important, and overall, so awesome.

Though you said you found it, I'll follow-up anyway. Might be helpful to someone else reading the thread :). There are graphics settings in  the FFXI config program ( I'm assuming you're playing on PC). Go into Start > Programs > PlayOnline > Final Fantasy XI, and there's a config program in there. You can customize the game to have a higher resolution as well as some other features to make it look better. Beyond that, there is a registry "hack" you can do on the PC to crank the overall resolution even higher. It won't make the textures any more crisp, but it makes the scene on-screen look much sharper.

You're right in that FFXI was originally designed around console and ported to PC. In that way, it plays very well with a controller. However, there is an option in-game to change the keyboard layout to a somewhat more "FPS" type setup... the W,A,S,D keys and what not. If you press the minus key on your number pad, it'll bring up the main menu, press the - key a second time and it shows the second menu screen (or press the left or right arrow keys). You'll see a "Config" option. In there is a Misc and Misc2. Under one of those is a keyboard layout option. You can set it to "small" and that will give you a setup closer to the more common W,A,S,D setup. I use that setup and love it. I don't even touch my mouse. It is a very different system than other MMOs, but once you get used to it, it's second-nature.

As for best job to play starting out? I'd say a melee job, like Warrior or Monk, or Thief to start. It'll help you get used to the battle system, controlling the character, etc. etc. etc.  As you play, you'll learn what jobs are better at what type of playstyles, and you'll eventually find one that suits you best.

Take your time - there's alot to learn and by no means are you expected to learn it all "now".

Enjoy!

I second the fact that a controller is a good way to go.  I found the keyboard a little too tricky....and the game works so well with a controller.  I picked up the logitech controller and it's great!....highly recommended.

GOOD LUCK!! AND WELCOME TO VANA'DEIL!!

zboard dont have the FF on the full keybord just on the other deal they have. you would figure they would have all the key sets for all the main mmo out there . They would make more cash.

Ok i have a microsoft one got it to work with one of the preset tabs, ohhh so much better

hmmm... controller eh? I remember playing this game like 3 years ago on a sub par PC and keyboard and with the sluggish framerates and control scheme it was frusterating. Now that I've upgraded big time and picked up a 360 for Windows gamepad I'm kinda tempted....

does this game run in Vista?

Yes, it works on Vista... But, you must download a Vista version of POL off of their official website in order for it to work. That's what I had to do with the two laptops that unfortunately have Vista.
