I have been tossing this around for a while and I am seriously considering coming back to this game.  I have been gone for about 7 months now so I believe that my character and possessions have been removed.

My first question is if that is still true, will I have to start all over?

I would also like to know if anyone has tried this on the 360 and if that is comparable to the pc version (I just cannot see how it would be possible to play a whm without macros).

Actually, that is all I got, I appreciate any and all responses.

Well I played a few years back for a total of almost 4 yrs, I have tried the Xbox360 version, and there is really no diifference from PC version, the visuals are the same, except for the nice HD the console offers, which is very nice on a nice big HD TV. I really am not considering going back atm, nothing has really changed,I have lost everything and I am not willing to go through that crap again it's like "Been there, done that", you do have to start all over again, from lv 1, handles only last 3 months, as for the controlls on the 360, well you use the Bumper buttons for the macros. which can be complicated at first, but can be overcome easily, can be somewhat tedious at first. or just plug  usb keyboard.
The game does run a lot better from ps2 version though, seems like less lag in crowded areas.

I don't know exactly how SE determines which content ID's they erase after a ceratin amount of time has passed. Some people say 3 months, but a friend of mine who has played since NA release has quit and came back twice. Both times he was gone for 8 months. His content ID wasn't erased. Another friend of mine quit for WOW, played that for 1.5 years and when he came back to FFXI recently he still had his character.

I'd say give SE a call and see if you're character has been erased or not. It may still be available.

I don't remember the specifics, but a while back SE had this big thing where they'd restore anybody's content ID and characters no matter when they quit.  I think as it turned out, they didn't really delete most content IDs no matter how much time had passed.

Could easily be wrong, but I think for 7 months you're safe.

I started playing when it first came out for PS2....(waited in line, got the whole clunky harddrive box and all!)
I played it for about two years.....then quit for WOW.  I then came back when WOW pissed me off too much after about a year, and my account was still retrievable.  I even retrieved it on my new PC.
I have since quit again after playing for a few months and went on to play EVE and Guild Wars.  But FFXI still seems to be my first love when it comes to MMOs.   I just can't get her out of my head and I keep doing what you're doing, and that is wondering if I should come back once more.

I haven't tried the Xbox360 version, but I loved it on the PS2 and got used to the controller so much that when I started playing it on the PC i went and got myself a logitech wireless controller.

All in all, I hope my ramblings helped a little, and I'll probably start playing again soon, as these boards have whetted my interest again in the game.  And now that they have Vista compatablility......I might as well try this again.

The only reason that I never came back is that I lost my ID information and disks, and I didn't want to buy a new set of disks just to start off with new characters.

You should talk to playonline about that.  I know that there is a client download for the game.... and if you can show ownership of the game, they will probably give you ID information.  I'm just guessing... but its worth a try.

I doubt SE would do anything regarding, as for the download, the only one is through BT.

In case someone else is interested in coming back to this game - I quit on july 17th of 06 and started back up today, june 12th, and my content id's were held, so I do not have to start over again, I was even able to keep my mules.  As I am waiting for all of the updates to complete, I am now wondering if I have all of my stuff, and if my plants are still alive......  I have also heard the economy had stabalized and I think I had a couple of million gil, so that may actually be worth something now.

Occasionally they do seem to have some sort of 'return to vanadiel' thing where you may be able to resubscribe and get your character back (even if you completely deleted it prior to quitting).  On other notes, it may also be possible that your character is still there anyway whereas you'd have to check your account to find out.

I'm looking at their page right now and I can't even figure out how to check your account from there.  Maybe you must install the playonline client to check anything?

I'm curious if my 75 black mage is still there.  I would never go back if I couldn't have my character back.

I was not aboe to find it on their site either.  I installed POL and then wen to the content id section, it had all of my old accounts for me to re subscribe to.  I am only 45 drk but I still don't think that I would have continued intalling the game if I could not keep them.  I am interested in seening what Chocobo raising is all about, that feature was added like a week or two after I quit, plus I guess a new expansion is coming out so maybe the game will start getting some new or more renewed players.

Once I get off work I am going to install the play online client and see if I can check the status of my character.  Taking note I haven't played it in 2 years, summer of 2005, I want to see if it's either still there or what.  If I am unable to tell if my character still exists without activating my account then I will have to contact them and ask them.  If it's not there I will question them in regards to getting it back there (I KNOW even if it appears they deleted your character, it's not gone.  It is SOMEWHERE for their 'return to vanadiel' thing.)  I wasn't even aware of the new expansion until just now :p

I would probably return and buy that, but ONLY if I get my character back.  I'm not willing to start a third character from scratch.  (I've done it twice before.  Though my first character, a level 71 elvaan beastmaster, I deleted manually and when I came back 6 months later I didn't want to bring him back although I had the choice to do so.)

My tarutaru mage though, I want to keep that one.  I'll only play if they let me keep it :p

Alright, SE did not delete my level 75 BLM.  :D

It's been about a year or two and my content ID was still there.  I reactivated it and there I was.  On the Ragnarok server.  Though unfortunately there seems to be some shoddy performance issues running this game in vista x64 with a geforce 8800 card.
