What are you opinions on wireless routers for gaming. A few years ago I heard they were crap and not very dependable. Have things changed? I'm building a new home and I am debating on installing cables. Your input would be much appreciated. Thank you. |

I have a friend that had an ethernet outlet in every room when he had his house built.
I didn't and went wireless. I regret not having outlets in each room. I have 2 xboxs, and 4 computers running off my wireless router. Wireless is OK, but if you have multiple computers and want the fastest response, don't use it. |

A wireless connection will never be as fast as a wired one. I have a wireless router but don't use it for gaming. Its so I can use my laptop anywhere in the house. My system and my wife's are both connected via ethernet.

i'd install the cable.
sure you can play mmos on a wireless connection, i do all the time, but i'd prefer not too. the convenience of wireless doesn't make up for the bad days where im too lagged to do anything, or my connection drops off at random intervals. most days are alright but the bad days are frustrating. im sure others have had more success with wireless than I have but I also know quite a few people with similar experiences to mine. the more walls you have between your comp and the router, the more your connection suffers. not to mention your download speeds will never live up to non-wireless speeds, at least mine have never gotten close. i feel very lucky when I see 200+ kb/sec, and its rare.
i'd recommend not going wireless. this is my first post on a site ive been registered on for a few months so that should illustrate how i feel about wireless internet and gaming. Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat |

That depends on your setup. Some wireless routers are pretty fast right now and it gives you convenience to boot without the limitations of wired setup.

Originally posted by Rollotamasi Yeah I'll definitely plan on using wireless for those purposes. Thanks to all who responded. If I may, what router do you prefer? I've been using a Linksys and I think I'm going to have to use it for target practice soon. My friend claims his Netgear has been outstanding.

I originally used a Zyxel and was having problems with frequent weak signal disconnections with my computer that is on another floor from the router, now I use a Netgear which is great and the disconnection problems have gone away. Also with the Zyxel the max thoughput I can go is about 700 kbps with the Netgear I can hit up to 1.2 mbps |

I also vote for Netgear.

I installed a wireless network for a friend...he gets 300kbps on his wireless connection, and no noticable lag. Thing is, you get what you pay for...you have to buy the high end equipment. His router cost $250 i believe, and each card for the laptops cost $100 a piece. D-Link ultra platinum 802.11N router, and mix of D-Link and netgear PC 'N' cards for the laptops.
He hasn't had any problems in over 5 months. |

I use Buffalo Wireless Routers, but I don't game off wireless connections. I have Gigabit (1000Mbps) speeds on all computers I game on. Wireless native speeds are 54Mbps, with the speed boosters or Framebursting support, they can get up to 120-125Mbps (faster than standard 100Mbps Ethernet connections). However, unless you run it on an unencrypted connection, there is security overhead attached to all your data that slows down the actual speed a bit.
If you can run Gigabit, that's the way to go. Wired is preferable, but some people don't have the option of running wires through their homes without draping them across the floor or fastening them to the ceiling. It all just depends on what you have available and what kind of speeds you want. |

Originally posted by Sager Actually depends how much your willing to spent on a wireless router and a wireless adepter to go along with it, there is a difference between quantity and quality :) But yea most people even with good solid jobs wouldnt be able to afford the kind of wireless routers that would make wired / wireless connection a non factor when your playing a fps game online or mmo :) |

Originally posted by Gonodil Well the prices you mention there, well thats pocket change and that kind of equipment is someone on welfare in denmark even could buy, thats a long way from high end equipment, sorry to shoot you down like that :p but 250$ is like 1250,- dkk for his router and 500,- dkk for his adapters, thats pretty shit tho , the router i have costs around 400$ and its shit for wireless with gaming , we'd be talking thousand of dollars for high end wireless routers if you were to be able to use it for proper online gaming such as fps games like Battlefield 2 online , counter-strike or whatever you play |
