These are the mmorpgs I want to see - not more point-eared elfs casting weedy fireballs! Bring on the non-traditional Sci-Fi! |

EVE is a wonderful battleship game but its not really an RPG. I haven't even heard of 'cox'. Did you mean 'CoH' or 'CoV'. The whole point is, there are no SF MMORGs as sophsiticated as WoW and LOTRO - and I wish there were. Specifically, I think a Dr. Who or a Dune mmorpg would be great. That's just an expression of desire, not 'whinning' as you so eloquently put it. |

Sci-Fi in the MMO genre is basically untapped.

Im sorry I didnt mean it that way, I should of put a wink in there. But aside from that I dont see the harm in fiction games for instance a futuristic with elements of fiction in it and etc, I agree I get tired of the same old thing to. But iI think TS will be great and Aion might even be good crossing my fingers on that. All we can do is be patient.
Btw have you tried ryzom yet? |
|
Originally posted by Angelbound I did try Rhyzom but only very briefly and, for some reason, it did not appeal at all. I think it was simply because it did not offer the visual richness that the games brought out by the big, well-financed companies can offer (though those same companies can often screw up a game - like SOE did with SWG). I hope TS will be good too - though I still wish some clever company would mine the Dr. Who or Dune franchises simply to provide their excellent, deep level content and all the possibilities that presupposes. |

Sorry bro, not sure how you came to that conclusion. "What was very briefly"? Ryzom easily holds up to more current games. |

Originally posted by Torak Relax - I am not making any point about Ryzom except to say that for a very brief period indeed, perhaps only the length of an afternoon, I played it and did not enjoy it. I have played many - or at least some seven or eight MORPGs - and found that all of them 'hooked' me for longer than Ryzom. That is not Ryzom's fault, it just did not appeal to me personally. I do understand that it has a large and loyal following. |

I personally could not get into ryzom eieither it was the skills that bugged me the most I felt them lacking, while they where very creative/imaginative it just didnt feel right to me, but ive seen some videos and the exploration in that game is pretty cool.

I think a Terry Pratchett, Discworld MMORPG would be great! You could have a field day with character customization, a really varied and interesting world and a really rich history and story-line.
But most importantly would be to give it that priceless sense of humor the books have! And where else would you get to ride on a disc on the back of four elephants atop a huge turtle |

LOL, agreed - yes, the Pratchett Looniverse would make a wonderful mmorpg. |

Originally posted by hubertgrove Its cool, sorry if it came across in a aggressive manor. I need to be brief at times, I'm at work. One thing that does put many people off about Ryzom is the art style. As far as a "large" following ....unfortunately thats not the case. Dune or Discworld would be interesting. I lean more toward original IP's however as players tend to base their expectations on preconceived ideas of what the game will be like. Then there is usually a pretty sever backlash when it doesn't turn out how the fans want it. See SWG, DDO and the Matrix. You can even see it in the LotR reactions. Star Trek is another ticking time bomb. They are already up in arms over the design direction that game has taken and its still over a year from launch. Building games on IP's is risky business. |

Dr Who MMORPG?
When you can travel anywhere in time and space, that's a pretty big ask of any games developer!

A Dune MMORPG was in developement some time ago and had gotten fairly far in the process when unfortunately the production team went belly up and plopped itslef and the project, never to be seen or heard from again. At the time there was no interest (read this as no one smart enough) to take over the project and that was the end of that. Some rumor mills have suggested that a team somewhere has purchased the old code and is working on it again, although rumors are as good as they are credible and well... that's pretty self eplanotory. |

Hmm, an interesting concept. However, would it fit a model for a massive multiplayer game? From what i remember of Dr. Who is more or less a solo guy on adventures or the more recent BBC TV series, a few support cast members supporting Dr. Who. Game design could be relatively simple: Instances. (Dr. Who and team enter in their telephone closet and pop into next instance) Character development I guess would be skill based. No formal professions I suppose. What other character customization would you have? Upgrade your time machine? What economy would you have? The challenges you could offer would be more intellectual than weapon combat fights. How is Myst: URU doing as a game? |

Never seen Dr Who, so can't say anything about that :)
But as i'm currently in the progress of reading the dune-series, i must say i would love to see an MMO based on that :) ... the story is pretty rich, and there is enough content for different races, classes and large world . I did notice though that they implemented the facedancer in Chronicles of Spellborn, but changed the name to SkinShifter lateron ( maybe for legal rights? ) ... Me too am desperatly searching for something new... i tried almost every trial out there for the past 2 years ... and currently i find myself playing the 2 week trial of swg again ( i LOVED that game ... long time ago). Indeed, we need something different ... something new .... and most important, something immersive !!!! Other options also sounded cool, like Discworld ... or maybe The crazy planet Tschai from Jack Vance :) Ps: The sand in Dune is mainly on Arrakis, Calagan however is a green/blue planet :) .. |

Didn't George Lucas basically steal Frank Herbert's Dune universe when he made Star Wars? You could try Star Wars Galaxies. Personally, George Lucas is what keeps me from the game in the first place. He completely misunderstood his own product in my opinion. And some might say the devs of SWG misunderstood their product... I play Ryzom with the imagery of Miyazaki's Nausicaä manga and lately Brian Aldiss' Hothouse before my eyes. |
