Issue 9: Breakthrough, the latest free expansion for City of Heroes and City of Villains has been released. This issue features a new invention system, the high-level Statesman's Task Force for heroes, and more. We are thrilled to announce the release of Issue 9: Breakthrough, for City of Heroes and City of Villains! Breakthrough is the ninth free expansion to City of Heroes since its release in April 2004. Issue 9 adds a whole new layer of game play to City of Heroes and City of Villains with the introduction of the highly-anticipated Invention System. Heroes and villains can collect "loot" in the form of Salvage and Recipes, and use it to craft new Enhancements, costume pieces, or temporary powers! I9 also brings you Consignment Houses (Wentworth's Consignment House for heroes and the Black Market for villains), a new Hamidon Encounter for both sides, and the high-level Statesman's Task Force for heroes. The implementation of how the loot drops is really well thought out. Keeps the farmers and campers away, yet still offers a lot more for hardcore, number crunchers to enjoy. … still. It is an economy. It’ll be a few months before we see the true virtues or ramifications of it. Like I said though, so far, really cool.

Well silly, that's because there aren't any asking prices or buy out prices to be found -- it's a blind bidding system. The only information available is how much the last x number of items sold for. A seller sets the price of whatever he is selling. This is the minimum that they will take for that item. There is a non-refundable listing fee to put any item up for sale. A buyer bids the price of whatever he is willing to pay for that item. If that price meets or exceeds the seller’s price, the buyer “wins” the item, and pays out what they bid. The seller then receives what the buyer bid, minus the Transaction Fees appropriate to the sale. Since the buyer didn’t know what the seller was asking, he could get practically any amount over what he was originally asking. For example, a seller could put a recipe up for 1,000 inf, and a buyer bids 250,000 inf for it. The seller would sell that recipe to that buyer, and end up almost 250,000 inf richer for it. So if you really want to move your product quickly, set low prices on it. Your stuff will move first if it’s the lowest price. However, you run the risk of someone bidding low, and you being the only qualifying price. If you really want to make sure you get an item that is for sale, bid as much as you are willing to spend on that item. Ask yourself how much is it really worth to you, because what you bid will literally be what you spend.

I also discovered that the actual prices paid for some costume recipes seemed excessive at 30,000,000 influance. I see off-shore gold sellers flooding the game now.

There are lots of “gotta have it now” type people, and a lot of those people have stock piled influence upwards of the high 100s of millions. That windfall will deplete over time, and a balance will emerge. It’s still up in the air how things will truly play out, but right now, there’s more reactionary attitudes towards it. Especially since nearly every other free expansion they’ve put out, the content was all nearly instantly attainable. This time, it’s no where near that. This is going to be good for the game. Especially since the loot is player specific, and not team granted. There’s no real way to “farm” the truly exclusive items, b/c of the 24 hour timer on those TF/SFs (instanced missions) and Hami (raids) rewards.

The other thing to keep in mind is that some people have been sitting on influence for...3 years now. Give the market time to settle (it's already happening) and things will be reasonable.
