I am having a very hard time deciding which would be a better choice ? Can somebody who has played both please give a non bias opinion. I'm kind of leaning toward Lord of The Rings Online right now because the theme is giving it the edge but Vanguard world seems great also. So which mmorpg would you say is better LOTRO or Vanguard?

Well I like some things in Vanguard a bit better and some things in LOTRO a bit better.

I think the classes in Vanguard are a lot more enjoyable.  They are more traditional D&D type of classes and races.

I like not having instances in Vanguard.

LOTRO has many many quests to complete and is easier to solo IMO.  I like that.  Vanguard isn't yet complete so there aren't quite as many quests and many require groups.  They are also doing a lot of nerfing to classes do to the game not being complete at release so you can't solo what you could originally with certain classes like Clerics and Disciple's.

Crafting is pretty decent in both games.

Character custimization is better in Vanguard IMO.  You can adjust your character in many differnt ways.  LOTRO is more like WoW in this respect.  You just toggle through differnt faces/hair for the most part.

Personally I'm trying hard to get into LOTRO right now because there are a lot more people around so it makes the game experience more fun.  I also enjoy doing quests solo so thats also fun for me.  I think Vanguard could be a good game  down the road, but it still has a lot of bugs and needs a lot of things to be added.  I'd try LOTRO first and then try Vanguard next year if it's still around.

The gameplay differences are almost to many to cover. But there are 2 points that mean a whole lot to most.

1) LotR has more people to group with and do things with period. But at same time it has 5000 times more solo content which makes grouping in some situations trivial.

2) VG future is uncertain right now as it looks as though SOE might be buying out Sigil so who knows where it will end up. Turbine has a true hit for now if they can indeed keep enough content coming due to the quick leveling.

Take that for what you will. I like VG on almost all gameplay elements over LoTR but those to facts are definite while everything else is based on playstyle.

First it depends upon weather or not your computer can run the game.  What type of gamer are you?  Vanguard is a grind taking lots and lots of time, if you don't have the time then lotr would be a better choice.  Myself I play vanguard, I tried lotr and found it boring.  But thats my choice.

if you can wait a few months vanguard is the better of the two lol  but if you like everyone else and want whats promised from the beginning then lotro is your game.

Lord of the Rings Online

Vanguard will frustrate you in many ways.  However, if you have every waking hour of your life to waste in an MMO you might like it..

LOTRO has way to many quests. I dont know about you but I play mmo's because I want mystery, multiplayer gameplay, adventrure, and exploration. I dont play mmorpgs because I want to travel from each zone digesting quest after quest line then to do it all over again in another zone not to far from the zone I was just in.

Vanguard is still beta. Population is not great. Has alot of potential. Living breathing world might be there soon. My personal choice would be Vanguard. I cant bring myself to do back and forth quests over and over, I would rather find a good group and grind.

What is the purpose really to go lvl up a new character on lotro for what? To epxerience the story line? To get to lvl 50 so you can fight monster characters? Really, I dont feel it. I bought LOTRO and wanted to play the game because I am addicted to this mmorpg lifestyle. In the end I dont even wanna touch LOTRO. Questing over and over from point A to point be and then back again is not what I want in a mmorpg.

I wanna go to a place where teh players are not in line like at 6 flags or disney land for a quest or area. I dont want to go to a theme park. I wanna go to a dynamic living breathing world where players are doing different things. Meaningfull content not just junk quests to keep the subscription and time sink in check.

If I were you, I'd stick with the big titles, DnL, SWG, stuff like that.

Let's put it this way: If you have anything less than a dual core processor, a 7600GS/x1650Pro and 2GB of RAM vanguard will run like crap, while LoTRO will play smoothly on pretty much the highest settings.

Also, I enjoyed LoTRO much more than Vanguard but I still became bored of it. Here's to AoC.

Speaking as someone that didn't enjoy LotRO....

Go for LotRO.  Vanguard is a sinking ship.

I would say save your money and purchase neither.

If you must try one, I would have to say LotRO. The game has real potential due to it's polished state and the developers have already shown promise, they are definately working hard.

Both games are quite similiar imo because they both are based on the EQ formula.

One could argue VG has more freedom, but it's simply a cop-out based on my experiances with VG. Both games feel like your on a train track, maybe with a few intersections here and there.

VG has more to do, and more performance issues and bugs to boot.

Hope my post helps.

If you must pick one of them id say go for lotro. I have heard nothing but good stuff from betaers and players.

Vanguard ive betaed and i would advise against playing it. Just too many headaches for the time being.

BUT if you are like me and waiting for someone to break the mold of current mmo's i would say neither, just wait for a developer with some balls to create something better, instead of rehashing the same stuff.

:) just my two cents.

Well, this is a very interesting question because I made a similar decision.  I BETA test LotR and although I do not have any serious issues with the game, it failed to capture me.  The world did not feel real or authentic; the content options are entirely linear; and the game did not have any spice of excitement or challenge to it.  In other words, the world was very predictable.  I consider LotR more or less a child's console game.

Vanguard, on the other hand, had a terrible release.  The release was so bad (not as bad as EQ 1's, for those of us that remember) that it continues to hurt the game.   However, I recently resubscribed to Vanguard (without the intention to remain subscribed) to see for myself if the game really did (or did not) improve.  I am astonished with the progress that has been made from bug fixes to solo content to how drastically performance has improved.  I am troubled that many people do not discuss this, but I have found that they do not discuss these facts in MMORPG because you have a Vanguard-hater subculture that shouts-out discussion

On my word, do not trust what people tell you about Vanguard in its current state unless they currently play.  I was a strong Vanguard-basher as a result of its early release problems.  However, today, Vanguard is in fact a much, much better game.

If you have a lot of time to spend to immerse yourself and enjoy lots of grinding go with VG.  If you have less time and like lots of questing go with LOTRO.  Both are beautiful.  VG is a more difficult game, but maybe that's what you want.  GL.

well healz4u that is interesting  indeed, I play both and i don't agree about your assessment of LoTR. I can tell you this I just don't want to log into Vanquard. Oh I do, but I'll do maybe 3 WOs and I realize how boring it is getting and i just log out. Adventuring in Vanguard is not all that great in my opinion and it too is tedious.

I think that is a great suggestion, and that is precisely what I did.

Posts like this are silly

"From what I here"

IE: I haven't played it, and I haven't got a clue, but I'll chime in anyway because it's fun to do

I've played both.

Vanguard has lots of great ideas in it but the implementation is weak.  While everything works you need a monster of a system to run the game and even on the best rigs it is STILL laggy.  It's got massive performance issues.

Also the world is immense and has a very low player population so it's hard to meet other players in it.

The quests are ok but it's mostly a level grind like EQ1 was (which is what they were going for).

LOTR has impeccable implementation but a slight content problem for anyone who's a power gamer.  If you're one of those players who puts in 8 hours a day on MMORPG's and levels as fast as humanly possible then you'll burn through the content in LOTR:O very quickly.  On the plus side the graphics (imo) are much nicer to look at and the performance is top notch, even on older systems and the quests are excellent.  The storyline is quite engaging and overall the game is 'fun'.  But like I said, powergamers will burn through the content very quickly.

So:  Powergamer with a good rig:  Vanguard
        Casual or Role-Player:  LOTR:O
