I was discussing games like Planetside with the credits system and games like BF2142 with unlocks and thinking to myself how it's possibly the most balanced leveling system availible. Instead of giving the character more Health or raw power each level you give them credits to use certain powerups and abilities.
The main reason for increased health and power has typicly been for player to monster balance at higher levels. But making something hit you harder at a higher level is a what's stagnating the market. just making a monster than hit the same but could better catchup to you or do more to trap and overwhelm you with the same damage hit that it did at level 1. I remember the threat for the longest time in Asheron's call was when you had to run the monster snapped onto you while you ran and kept on hitting. You could still have weapons that are crafted to adjust base variables like total damge hit rate or accuracy so crafting would have a place. So why isn't this concept more accepted? Is it that they would have to make better IA and that's to much work or because players really don't want balance in reality? |

Eeh....problem with relying on AI so heavily I think would be that not only would you need to develop a system that is actually capable of operating on many different intelligence scales, you would have to do it over a massive network...
I actually love the concept of keeping a player and the npcs at a general same stat level, and receive enhancements in one form or another that benefit their capability in a way other than just throwing more hp and damage at them. As the size of an explosion increases, the number of social situations it is incapable of solving approaches zero. - Vaarsuvius |

It’s not a question of “who has it right” it’s “what do you like”. People that like FPS will think a FPS gets it right, people that like RPG’s will think an RPG has it right. |
