I'm a Mac and Linux user...
I can honestly say there's TONS of programs that "work on Linux"... but it's after heavy modifications that are beyond the realm of the majority of Linux users... ...let alone windows users. I'd go so far as to say 0.1% of Windows users might be capable of those modifications. That's being generous. Yet, I use Linux and MacOSX. And recomend them extensively. Change at your own peril. But I warn you that it's not a 100% solution yet. ...course... neither is Vista... - CaesarsGhost Lead Gameplay and Gameworld Designer for a yet unnamed MMO Title. |

Dual boot your machine between Linux and windows. Use the windows partition just for gaming and the linux parition for everything else. -Currently looking forward to FFXIV -Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda |

Originally posted by kikumanHonestly, Linux isnt really a out of the box type of OS. Its a tweakers/geeks dream. I'm not trying to say you are a noob or stupid or anything, just you probably didn't put the effort into really tweaking it (Which is perfectly cool if thats not your thing) If you want something you just install and its ready to go then XP is definetly the way to go. If you wan't a project then linux is a great OS. I tend to think of it like car guys. You know what I'm talking about, those guys that would spend 3 hours working on a engine to get another 2 horsepower out of it. Linux guys are the same. -Currently looking forward to FFXIV -Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda |

IMO Linux is better, I just wish more stuff was compatible with it. Theres some pretty sweet interfacing for Linux now as well. One being a 3d interface thats about 10 times better than stupid Vista and doesnt take as much resources. |

With Linux you have 3 options for playing windows games. Wine, Cadega, VirtuaMachine(booting an instance of WinXP). Wine and Cadega could potentially have compatibility issues, but using Virtua Machine or whatever its called you can definetly play anything on Linux you can on Windows. The only problem is your practically running windows and linux at the same time with the exception linux is handling the networking.

From my understanding its easy to look up stuff other people created to customize your linux software, and my roomate use to have it and he said it is not hard, you dont need to spend alot of time on it to make make it good for you. Maybe only at first of course:) |

WoW I think can run on Cedanga/Wine, though some people got accidentally banned or something, but they could have been botting. Here is stuff meant to run on wine: |

I'd just dual-boot, that makes things ALOT simpler once it's done. I dual-boot, but I have 2 Windows XP Pros, no others...It's in case I get infected by a virus. xD |

"It's not hard" and "don't need to spend a lot of time" are relative statements. It may be quick and easy for your roommate to set up Linux because he has knowledge and experience, but the typical Windows user will almost always have a hard time getting it to run the way he wants it. |

There is always the Ubuntu option which is as pre-made Linux Kernel made for ease of use. However, it has trouble recognizing ATA drives and SATA drives at the same time.

To be honest the average computer user doesn't need Linux at all.
If you want to use Linux and you've always been a Windows user I'd recommend putting Linux on a second computer (an older one maybe) and find your way around it. Then if you find yourself comfortable and it does everything you want then by all means switch. I don't see the point in complicating things just for the sake of it. May I ask your motivation for switching please? (never mind I just re-read your OP, it's 'because XP sux') |
