Early this morning MMORPG.com visitors were exposed to a virus through our web pages. We shut down our web site and proceeded to secure our services against this new threat. We are now confident that we have isolated and halted the malicious code and have once again turned our site back online. Users are advised to install a virus scanner and perform a full system scan to be on the safe side. We apologize for the inconvenience and would like to assure our community that we will continue to do everything in our powers to keep our visitors safe from these attacks. - MMORPG.COM Staff - |

What was it and what does it do? I was on the site this morning, but my scanner is coming up with nothing. I use AVG. Should I be concerned?

From our reports the only virus we heard of was "Trojan-Downloader.JS.Agent.eb" but searches did not lend much information on this virus. The last time this happened it was more than one type of virus, so there is a good chance it was not just one. This time the attackers used a domain name in the source URL (fpipe.com) so luckily the owner of that domain shut it off on their end early on and the exposure to our users was minimal (15 minutes to 1 hour is our best guess). Again, I would play it safe and update your scanner (or get a free one if you don't have one), scan your system and double check your Windows Updates over the next week or so (or better yet turn on auto updates).

If you have your browser setup to only activate add ons with a permission click you shouldn't be worried, but may want t run a full scan overnight. If you never saw the notice bar and your browser is setup to automatically allow plugins access to your browser then there is issue for concern.

Indeed. It is also important to note that you would have only been exposed if using the Internet Explorer web browser. Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape and Opera users would be safe since the browsers do not allow ActiveX controls.

Yeah, once us firefox users can infect IE users with common sense the net will be a safer place =P

Has MMORPG.com involved the FBI for these most recent attacks?

This is a great free anti virus program for those of you who may need one. I didn't realize that people still used IE.... :p |

Originally posted by Hoobley That is a good one. I didn't realize people still blindly thought mozilla variation are safer than IE (because since IE7 Firefox is actually less secure and slower). Personally I use Opera primarily. It has a few pageview issues still, but makes everythign else seem slow...that and I like having secure passwords so I avoid Firefox. Firefox 2.0.0.2 still has the vast majority of security flaws that existed since 2005. |
