Id have to say 3dmax is the optimal choice 3dmax is the main standard, with maya at a slight 2nd place. I use 3dmax myself. since 3.1. its a aweome program. |

3DS Max tends to be extremely good for things such as landscapes and buildings and is also a great starter piece of software for a beginner 3D Artist, Maya I find is great for doing the extremely detailed graphics such as character design, lighting and texturing, simply because I find that there are more options for changing the way the lighting attributes and movement of objects is a calculated more accurately than max so it means that you do not have to spend time fiddling with it to get one little corner of an object looking right.

I'm going to disagree with you about 3D Studio Max being good for beginners. I actually got my star with Milkshape 3D and was lost when I stepped up to 3DSM. Given, it is a lot more versatile than earlier modelers like Calgari Truespace, but It's definitely not for beginners. If you're just starting out I would recommend Milkshape 3D or Anim8tor. You could also probably find a copy of Gmax, but the functionality of that would be extremely limited since it's no longer supported.
At any rate, you want low cost or freeware tools to use at first so you can decide if this is something that you really want to do. Three grand just to try something is just too damn high for most people. Hell, even Maya has a free learning edition. |

Mud Box is the shit. Check this thing out I am working on:
With my pre-existing knowledge of Maya, 3DS Max, and ZBrush. It took about 2 seconds to learn to use it. For actual base modeling I like to use 3D Studio Max just because it has a little more functionality then Maya without building modules. However there are some node based things I would like to do in Max that maya does. |

I use Maya and Zbrush combo. Works really well. And if you want to learn, there are "Awesome" video tutorials and very detailed too. He sets em up to be used by instructors to teach there students.
He uses the combination of Maya, Zbrush, and Photoshop. I highly recommend checking these out. |

I have to say 3ds max is the go for me. I like maya but I see it more for cinematics (which is exactly what I use it for, personal preference only, so dont shoot me if you disagree). Whereas 3ds Max I use for modelling etc.
