Most tech magazines and tech sites review computer systems.   Some systems are submitted for review with the integrator knowing the system will be featured in a review.   Some sites purchase the unit anonymously and review it that way.

What is your opinion on this subject?

I would very much like to see the reasons for your answers...

Thankyou very much

Val

It is very important that the machine being tested is a good representation of the products offered to the general public, rather than one that may have been designed to be reviewed and may not be 100% the same.

I agree with Dreneth. The other option would be that the system is purchased anonymously however most mags/sites that review haven't the budget to purchase 10 pc's a month and rely on donated review models from manufacturers. Or at least that's what I understand.

So in essence, Dreneths proposal wins it for me as it's more realistic.

Say for example a mag/site gets a review PC from a manufacturer. They give it a rave review because it is the best thing since the ZX81.

On release the manufacturer should also provide a release PC (all returned to the manufacturer) for comparison. This should then be reviewed in comparison and published giving prominence in the publication as there will always be a difference.

My two gold pieces.

Exactly.. you need a random sample for any test to be meaningful. Bias on the manufacturer's end is the worst, since they generally process their product less than the test model that they give to mags.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

I've read plenty of reviews where a company send the review a computer that they knew was going to be reviewed and it had all kinds of problems.  No matter how good you prep a computer it's still a computer.  I don't think it matters.

I agree, just because it is provided by the manufacturer does not mean it will get a good review.  I think it more weight should be placed on the site reviewing the computer to not show prejudice.  There are so many hardware review sites these days, you have to wonder they all are aboveboard.  Not making any accusations, but I do keep a healthy amount of skepticism when reading them.

In an ideal world, every study is blind, requiring a purchase. Of course I should point out that this ideal study would never just test one of any machine, that doesn't account for statistical abberations. They'd have to anonymously purchase several of every machine they want to test.

Also the brands would have to be blacked outside and inside the case. And the drivers all have to be motified so as not to display brands either. The diagnostic & benchmark software itself would also have to avoid displaying names. After all, it's only double blind if the tester doesn't know what he's testing either.

The ideal test is never going to exist. We live in the real world. So I checked that it doesn't matter.

Which it doesn't. Any worthwhile tester is going to point out exactly what hardware was tested, and even a moderately-savvy customer is going to notice if theirs comes with a different video card. The smaller the change the harder it is to notice, but also the less worthwhile it is to make. What would they change, the bios? If a better bios existed, it would be the standard. Are they going to only use a circuit board printed on the "good" machine? There's just not that much that ma
