In an interview with Martin Matt, from the popular GameIndustry.biz site, Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire calls America "a land of cheap people", while the UK is “a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium”.
When asked about the high price of the PS3 in PAL areas, especially in the UK (where Sony’s console is currently being sold for GBP 425- US $840- more expensive than anywhere in Europe) this is what Ray Maguire had to say: “If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive – consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK – a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more. The cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US and that's before you even stop to consider the US doesn't have VAT at RRP, they put a small amount on afterwards. Whereas, we get stung by 17.5 per cent. And pity the poor Irish and places like Sweden. But we have to remember this is no different to selling a cup of Starbucks coffee or a McDonald's hamburger. This is the cost of living in the UK. It just becomes another barrier for us to get more product into the marketplace because the price needs to be set higher to get from our factory to the consumer.” Maguire continued to defend PlayStation 3’s actual price of GBP425 by saying it’s “the best for the consumer” although he admitted Sony had thought at selling its product for a higher price, namely GBP 429. Concerning PS3’s apparently disastrous debut in PAL areas, the Sony UK official admitted to some “issues”, but argued that every console launch had its tides in the past: “Well, it's certainly not been smooth sailing. I'd have to say that every launch has its issues. Sometimes they're behind the scenes so you'll see the grace of the swan above the water and not the rapid movement of legs beneath.” He also put much of the responsibility for Sony’s bad press in the recent period on the media’s continuous hunger for sensational and biased articles, accusing journalists of being “lazy” when it comes to selecting information for their articles: “Nowadays, with how the media works, not only does information fly around at the speed of light, so does mis-information. With blogs on the increase, people's thought processes are transferred from one place to another and picked up by people who might be lazy when it comes to finding out whether something is true or not. The old adage of never let the truth get in the way of a good story is probably more prevalent than it has been before”. and folks wonder why we thnk sony has some arrogant leadership??????? |

Even if I did not live in the states this would still turn my stomach. What a bunch of disgusting, pandering, money worshiping toads. I am truly not sure who should be more insulted. People in the states, or people in the UK as these snakes try to slither around them for their money. Which is the next country that the PS3 is supposed to release in? I'm morbidly curious to see what insults Sony has for UK nationals after their system flops there, too, and they try to butter up the next group. edit: I wondered about the SWG reference, aside from the Sony / SOE relationship. This should probably have been posted in the general forum, if anywhere here. Still, it's good to have seen this regardless IMO. edit 2: ah, I guess this is their final stop. That's almost a shame... edit 3: .. heh, I managed to not see the link in the OP, never mind this. _____ |

Wow Karma showing her hand and bitch slappin sonyt..who'd thunk that a 600.00 over priced console wouldnt succeed..Or changing a game twice with bad results would have any effect on things..Jeez things that make you go hahaha told you so! |

Hey I would buy a PS3....................
If they knock 200 bucks off the price. I think the system is great and I like the free online play and the bluetooth and blu ray and various other blue things that make this console so very nice but I simply refuse to pay 600 bucks for a game console. When The 360 sells for so much less and has comparable graphics it is insane of sony to think they can be competitive. If it wasnt for the xbox live subscription I would buy one of those but I refuse to pay for it again after the rotten experience I had the first time around. |

I wonder if Sony believes it's all the frowning at their price point that is making people not buy their machine.... hence why they would look at America as said land of "cheap people."
I for one would definitely be all over the PS3 if there was just something I found worth getting it for. Honestly, it's a good value, even compared to the 360, due to its blu-ray and HDMI capabilities. It's just when the only content I would currently buy for the system are a couple games that are already available for the PC and 360 that makes the price, and the system itself, superfluous. |

I don't really know anything about SWG, but I saw this topic come up and wanted to check it out. I think you may be misinterpreting what the guy is saying. He's comparing the cost of things in the U.S. to the cost of things in the UK, and simply saying that the cost of living for an American is cheaper than it is for a Brit, hence the higher cost of a PS3 in the UK than in the U.S.. I am in no way trying to defend anybody here. Frankly, I could care less about SONY or its execs, but saying they're trash talking Americans is pretty bold. I would think someone in a position like Ray Maguire to have more sense than to "mouth off" and trash talk about the largest consumer base and economy in the world.

uhm they're mostly trash talking UK I feel, but in any case they're trash talking, it's bloody pathetic I hate SOE though I don't hate Sony as much, though if they carry on like this then I probably will end up hating them too. They say it's cheaper in America because of the fact they don't have to pay VAT? well let me tell them something, it's because citizens in America don't have to pay the bloody VAT, people visiting America do, the damn moron clearly doesn't know anything about what he's talking about, blegh, can't be bothered wasting my time here....wait... I just did *wonders off grumbling about how we get free health care and education services because everything is so damn 'expensive'* *yawns and coughs* Currency Value! *coughs* CURRENCY VALUE! *coughs again then walks off fully*
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place. |

It's funny how Nintendo is kicking Sony's ass with the Wii, when all it took was a little innovation to make something unique. I guess it doesn't hurt that it is also significantly cheaper, and a helluva lot of fun! |
