Guild Wars Guru has posted an article about the sequel to Guild Wars Beta coming in 2008. The story is expected to run in PC Gamer May Issue. Check out some of the details below.

They are abandoning the Campaign format because it required them to reinvent GW completely for every chapter, and it began to feel 'bloated' to them. It's also increased the tutorials and has created a barrier to new players entering the chapters. The Expansion increases the timeframe but allows them to do what they want to with the game, without worrying about new professions, or pre-lvl20 content. This is a new blueprint for a completely new game.

Expect a BETA for Guild Wars 2 in 2008.

Eye of the north is a HOLIDAY 2007 RELEASE and is catered to exisiting players. It will required that you own at least one of the previous campaigns and is not considered a standalone. This expansion will connect the Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 storylines. The developers listened to the community that 2 campaigns a year isn't necessarily what people wanted, that many hadn't finished a chapter before the new one was released.

A team will be assigned to support the current games with live contet still expected.

Guild Wars was a fun game but a little low on the content.. by becoming more of a traditional MMO (while keeping some of the elements that set Guild Wars apart) I think Guild Wars 2 is totally going to rock! I'm very excited about the news.

The only difference between a Troll and a Fanboi is which side of the fence they stand on.

I'm going to miss the GWs expansions and the new things for it.  Just last year they pledged their continued support for the... game?  Series?  Whatever... now they're pulling that support basicly.

That said, I'm always a fan of new games.  I'd love to see what they have planned for GW2... but I'm pretty upset about GW1 getting waysided.

Though I'm not sure quite yet about a GW2, I do agree that the content didn't feel so fresh after 200 hours of play. Yes, WoW does suck, but there is lots to do, and you can do it continuously. GW focuses on missions and stories, which are much better, but don't have much of a replay value. I think GW2, if done right, could blow every other MMO out of the water. Even Age of Conan. (But maybe not EVE )

It's only low on content if you're a hardcore gamer. It's perfect for casual gamers.

And Gaile (Community Manager) has stated on other sites that the original Guild Wars will continue to be supported after GW 2 is launched.

I'm excited to see Eye of the North...and waiting for more details on GW 2 before making a final judgment on it. If they do it right (not like traditional MMO's) then they'll still have me as a customer. It's obvious they want to switch to something that's not as limited level wise and switch to mostly non-instanced areas...I just want them to do that in the right way. Traditional MMO's and their grind are not the way they should go with GW 2.

I'm very, very intrigued by the things mentioned.  One of the things that pushed me away from the original Guild Wars was the weak PvE content that needed the miserable MMO tradition of grinding (And they really designed some lousy PvE quests quite frankly)

But the PvP was excellent and I would have kept playing if the game hadn't required pre-20 PvE to gain skills.

Plus it will be great to finally be able to jump in the game LOL

(Though I have to admit their 'events'  sound an awful lot like WAR's idea of Public Quests, but who cares?  If it's a good game mechanic idea everyone will be using it and leaving tired old standard MMO ideas like boring 'delivery quests' in the dust.)

Sounds good to me...   Maybe this will give them a chance to actually integrate PvE, PvP, and Progression all together better.   I don't know enough about the game to really comment on this stuff other than to say that I didn't feel there was a smooth transition between those things.  It was fun, don't get me wrong...  but it felt like every step of the way meant having to face a new learning curve for MinMaxxing.   Needless to say I did not feel encouraged to explore everything that the game had to offer and I feel that was just as much their faults as it was mine

PS:  IMO, "Sidekicking" and Char as a playable Race is EPIC WIN.

[Bias: I have all three GW campaigns.] As long as there's no monthly fee and it's fun, I'll probably pick up GW2, but what would guarantee a sale is if it somehow connects with the original, even if it's just porting characters into 2.

Something I hate about (most) sequels is that if the gameplay is just an upgraded version of the original, it feels like all the time I've spent leveling characters was a waste when I start over in the sequel. Back in the day I was a huge Armored Core fan, and I was able to transfer my favorite mech through four sequels.

Maybe I'm just weird for taking pride in ownership in my game-creations , but when the products combine Voltron-style like GW, it takes the edge off of 'starting over'.

In GW: Eye of the North will be something called  'Hall of Monuments'  which will allow players from GW1 to transfer titles/minis and other achievments to GW2 (you will be even able to reserve name).. Some titles won;t be available in GW2 so plying GW:EN will be like preparing for GW2. Sure we won;t be able to transfer the whole characters (gold/items etc.) but GW2 will be different game afterall. Imo it's really cool.. I guess no other sequel had something like that =]

I have to go along with the consensus that the game has become bloated. The first campaign was a breath of fresh air for me as a gamer. I never really gave the 2nd campaign much attention merely rushing through to level to 20 for the pvp. The third campaign did absolutely nothing for me despite the new look of the characters and classes (plus 2 new classes that did not impress me personally). GW2 is the right direction to take and one to watch for 2008.

I agree with thor that GW1 is perfect for casual gamers. Kinda hard for hardcore gamers to get into it other than trying to claw up the GvG ladder. I personally think theres ALOT OF PEOPLE that haven't picked up guild wars purely because the entire world is instanced. Now since that will change with GW2 I think they will probably get more players. Oh and btw is the game going to have a monthly subscription because if it doesn't that that will most DEFINITELY ROCK! Huge scores of WoW players will probably pick up GW2 if it doesn't have a subscription and that could possibly be the first time in history that an MMO could put a dent in WoW subscribers. I'm definitely going to be following this VERY CLOSELY .

Is there an MMO that out there that isn't affected by Xao Ping Wang and their money grubbing macro bots?

cool.... been hearing news about the new GW but didnt know if it was true. Is it true theyre taking out the "everything is instanced" system? And does any1 know if its free to play once you buy the copy, just like previous GW games? I am totally blown away by this news right now

there will not be any monthly fees.

there will still be instancing (missions and some quests) but mostly non-instances areas.

possibly no level cap. god i hope so, but not likely.

a form of world pvp will be included, but guild vs guild is where its the best imo.

i believe that there will be more of a focus on pve story and quests

did i mention that there will be no monthly fees in a mostly non-instances game?

Alot of the GW1 fans are moaning, but i love it.

IMO gw:en (eye of the north -c4) looks tird. Its just added PvE content to keep peeps busy for a while (so they can make GW2) and to link the two games together, that is from a mainly PvP players view.

But GW2 looks amazing, i have read the mag article and even the people who are disapointed will love it when it actually comes out. i think a bit of grinding into PvE will make it miles more interesting, atm its mindless repetitive monster bashing (mostly). and massive less organissed battle grounds and more complex movement etc, is just what PVP needed.

The best way to travel is by means of imagination.

I think this is great news. Arenanet was formed because some of the then Blizzard devs were hating the way things were going. They wanted to make a game that didn't focus on grinding or gear, and focused on a good story for PvE, and skill for PvP. They did a good job, but there were several key mistakes, such as the only having instanced areas. I think they were trying for something different, but diverged too far from what an MMO should be. I seems to me that they learned a great deal from GW1, and if GW2 has the same quality of production, with new and interesting ideas, and make it more of a MMO, I think that it will, in fact, blow everything else away.

Obviously, we won't know for some time, but it is surely something I will keep my eyes on.

"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

Actualy, you not need pve at all, if not want it. Just make pvp character and play :)
You get factions for playing pvp and can unlock skills, items, armors and so on.
