The Most Anticipated MMORPG in 2007

I'm a big fan of the forums that MMORPG.com provides for its users.  Most of the time I use them without any whining because it allows many fans of the genre to come and interact without having to pay a subscription fee.  Although, when I read this banner I lol'd and got a bit miffed.  I know marketing a grindfest is serious business, but doesn't MMORPG.com have a staff member who looks over the banners before applying them to the rotation?  A simple edit of the .gif could delete the frame which is false.

Should this banner be removed?

Yes. FALSE ADVERTISING
No. I don't care

It is false advertisement, but there isn't jack anybody can do about it. You can't "record" anticipation, you can't find 100% proof it was or wasn't anticipated. So companies will do it anyway.

although I will admit that the internation version of that game, called Pirate King Online, was very hyped among freeloaders.

I assumed a website devoted to MMORPGs wouldn't let such false advertising appear at the top of its site.  Also, most commericals have small print which lets you in on where they got their statistical data.

I guess it is just a personal preference that most claims be partially backed up.  It would make the people at MMORPG.com look better if their adverts were a bit more honest.

Although I'm glad there aren't constant gold selling banners popping up.  I'll just count my blessings.

I only post here because the alternative is boredom.

Actually, I think the banner is hurting the game, because most MMORPG users are pretty aware and game savvy. I know when I first saw this I thought it was pretty desperate sounding.

Its called America dude.

Learn the rules.

Rock n' Roll baby.

Freedom of speech.

Seriously though consumers are smart enough to see through this nonsense quite quickly. And it isn't mmorpg.coms job to change ads they dont nessecarily agree with. They provide the ad space and the person who purchases the space chooses what they wanna put in there.

So if I purchase ad space I can make a banner that says:

Dragonturds Online
"Has more users than World of Warcraft."

Just because I buy the space doesn't mean a webmaster should allow such crap to be promoted.  I thought there was a conversation of sorts between the company who advertises and the place where the advertisment is shown.  I wouldn't want some blasphemy like that crusting up my website.

Although, to be perfectly honest I do remember the horrible MapleStory banners that told users to play instead of do homework.  I suppose it is all up to the webmasters personal standards.  Mine are a bit too high I suppose.

Its not a webmasters job to censor the ads for content. If you ran a website and only posted ads that you agreed with you wouldnt be making very much advert money at all.

I know when I got a email from MMORPG with the announcement of Beta key handouts, I deleted it without even thinking.

It will have a hard time even surviving in this marketplace, another waste of funding money.  Some investors are going to take a real bath on this one.

and how many movies can be the "#1 movie in America".   it's the advertiser's job to make it sound like it's popular so you'll want to jump on in and play it and get ahead of everyone else. and there's no point criticizing them no matter how funny and ridiculous it sounds. you only give them more satisfaction that you're talking about them and now you made me do it. Hey I liked Dragonturds online it was good. jk. But when people say its the most anticipated they dont specify who they are saying is waiting for it. It could really mean "most anticipated game of 2007 by the french police" if every one of them was anticipating the game itself ya know?

I think it should be removed because the host is an idiot.  Why host a game thats already hosted by someone else in the same market?

Maybe they think they can do a better job of hosting/marketing/customer service? And therefore steal the market share and make more money??

Tons of people are always playing these free games. Even the craptastic ones.

In the end the increased competition can only be good for us consumers anyway.

Blizzard says Wow was made for the casual gamer, is that false advertising?

Any government large enough to guarantee your freedom, is capable of taking it away.

The federal government gets its powers from the individual states, according to the Constitution. Yet the feds act as if they are the source of all power and control. They are wrong.

But until 'We the People' begin to realize it, and demand REAL change to the ongoing degrading Change from this administration, we are doomed to suffer at the hands of our own elected and appointed officials. - Christianptriot

Well, at least I wasn't the only one that got a giggle out of their "Most anticipated" tagline.

After actually checking the game out, it just makes it even funnier. I'm guessing it's anticipated by the hordes of F2P gamers that will play anything, so long as it's free.
