I just read this in another thread about the billions that Blizzard is making. It really deserves its own thread I think as I believe there is some truth to it. Zax man may have hit a nerve of truth regarding different company customer respect and loyalty. Blizzard does seem to take full credit for all their success almost like they fully expected wow to easily hit 10 million plus subs. And I also agree that Turbine tries and works very hard to give back to their paying customers and fans with live events and content additions to even a small niche game like AC.

Anyhow, Zax prolly said it better here. I've copied and pasted his remarks:

* * * * *
World of Warcraft is a genius game but it also offers very little innovation and offering back to their paying customers who are making them hundreds of millions of dollars per year in pure profit. Regardless of the math, I guarantee you that their pure profit is easily in the hundreds of millions per year off of this one game.

Look at Asherons Call. 15,000 subs tops these days. Not 8.5 million. That means that Asherons Call has like 1/6th of 1% of the active subscriptions of WoW as of right now. That's right... ONE-SIXTH OF ONE PERCENT. Turbine, after 8 years is still offering monthly events and patches and new content to Asherons Call. FREE. There's already been many dozens of FREE monthly events, patches and new content added to the world of Dereth in Asherons Call. Surely with hundreds of millions of pure profit per year, Blizzard could atleast offer some kind of FREE new content to WoW without charging $40 for it. But they don't need to. So they won't. That's corporate greed of the worst kind.

Many of you hate Turbine and have oodles of respect for Blizzard. I can understand that from a quality of product standpoint. But watch Lord of The Rings Online closely. Even though Turbine is bound to have their biggest and most successful game by far with LOTRO, they will STILL put out all kinds of FREE downloads and content for their upcoming game. It will probably come at a monthly rate, if not even faster. It will be HUGE expansions to the LOTRO virtual world and HUGE content additions. And it will all be at absolutely no cost. That's right... zero additional cost besides their $9.99 to $14.99 monthly fee. Just watch. Just watch also at how the customer support for LOTRO will absolutely BLOW AWAY the customer support offered now by Blizzard for WOW. Just watch.

As far as treating their customers with the respect they deserve for helping to make them successful, Turbine beats up Blizzard in this area about 10,000 to 1.

Consider all that and tell me again how much greater Blizzard is then Turbine. Seriously. Just think about it.

here we go:

Forum Poll

Who "gives back" to their players more (ie free content, events, and customer support)

Turbine - But it's a close call
Blizzard - But it's a close call
Turbine - By a long shot, not even close
Blizzard - By a long shot, not even close
Who cares?

"Beer for the beer god!"

What is your point? I play the game and still enjoy it. I have more important, REAL LIFE, issues to worry about instead of pondering what amount of money Blizzard makes. I pay to enjoy myself in a virtual world, and WoW is doing exactly that!

P.s.: When comparing Blizzard to Turbine, take ALL games into account, not just WoW. WoW exists for about 2 years now, and turbine has been at it for 8 years (?). Thats like comparing a junior programmer to a senior programmer. And besides....who cares?

Hey, webmaster (not OP):

Isn't it time to change the address from mmorpg.com to something like this:

lets-put-our-heads-together-and-find-more-ways-to-mock-blizzard.com ??

This site is excellent, but if you remove all the childish attempts to mock Blizzard, the free space on your servers would probably increase with a couple of TB...

Actually, this isn't a "lets flame blizzard post" but a mere observation that I myself have never thought of until I saw it posted by someone else. It's actually a very important point in mmos. I mean when we pay our hard earned money to play an mmo, don't we want the most and best service that we can get within that game? Don't we like FREE live events that are well thought out to bring something different and totally new to the gaming table each month? Shouldn't housing be a free upgrade rather then be contained in a $40 expansion pack? Shouldn't different mounts or whatever be a free downloadable upgrade to the game? Especially if the game maker is already bringing in hundreds of millions per year in straight profit?

Sorry that I hit a nerve on all you foaming at the mouth. fanatical WoW and Blizzard fanboys. I can only assume that its you rabid fanboys of WoW that are taking the time to vote that "you don't care". So far Turbine is getting about 65% of all the votes that they do deliver by far the best service and devotion to their paying customers.  About 35% say you don't care. (Which means you're just likely pissed that this thread struck a fanboy nerve within you. 0% of the total votes thus far going to Blizzard for the best customer support and free downloadable content.

Turbine 65. Blizzard 0.

..Sounds about right.

Turbine has also shown that they are horrible at reading markets and giving players what they want....i.e. AC2.  They create a niche that gets them status, AC1, then ignore what that niche wants and creates an EQ clone AC2 and fail.  Lets hope that they learned something from this.  Free content could not save AC2.

I understand your frustration with AC2, yet this point you make really has NOTHING to do with my OP (original post). My point was that Turbine is actually very good at working hard to make a game better for free with downloadable patches and new content and live events every month with their games once those games are already out. Speaking of AC2, look at all the players that stated how much better Turbine actually made that game from launch to the time it was shut down. Look at AC1. Solid support of its game with tons of content added with only two expansions that actually required purchasing. Look at DDO. It has gotten 10 fold better since its launch and Turbine HAS listened to its customers and offered a wide open world and reduced the instancing dramatically even though they still have to try and provide en experience similar to Dungeons and Dragons with a narrator (DM) giving details.
