I will reserve judgment until I see some actual information, obviously, but I will say this much: I doubt this Warhammer 40K MMOG will 'own' WAR.
For one, I have serious doubts about the ability of some fairly inexperienced developer to MMOGs making a top-notch MMOG. Sure, it has been done before, and everyone must start somewhere, but recent efforts from newer companies have been fairly disappointing. I just do not trust THQ to pull it off quite yet. Secondly, I think that while fantasy can be considered to be overdone, it is overdone for a reason - the mainstream MMOG crowd seems to like it. There is certainly room for another good sci-fi MMOG, but they will never topple high fantasy MMOGs in the foreseeable future. I am indeed curious what the focal point of the game will be. Mythic has RvR, a concept they developed previously and added to in WAR, but what will THQ do to distinguish their game? Should be interesting. |

IMO http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6166560.html?tag=topslot;title;1&om_act=convert&om_clk=topslot
will go a more combat (maybe even fps) route. Kinda like Huxley is gunna do. This is just a gut feeling, got nothing to back it up. Also remember its very early days. If they dont come up with really REALLY good ideas GW will just pull the plug. Id be suprised if they let some1 without alot of mmo exp develop a warhammer game. Also I can see EA Mythic trying to steal this one as a project for after WAR |

So it is not that these guys are perfect nobodies, they all worked on some other MMorpg project. of course this could mean a lot or nothing, but still... I personally do not believe they are making a MMORTS. It makes no sense to NOT give such a project to Relic or at least use Relic as advisors as they are like the Gods of RTS. So, it is either a MMOFPS, a "small" MMorpg (not taking the whole ip) or something different. They mention the gameplay will be innovative, but of course that could be Corporation bullcrap. Still, a traditional MMorpg scheme does not work well with Warhammer 40k unless it is necromunda. And that is unprobable "hey, wehave this huge IP everybody knows and you get to do a game for it! Great, we will take this obscure game offshot only 10% of the people actually know and do it on that!!1111" "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime" |

Originally posted by Lithdov GW prob wont let this go ahead. They wont want their 2 games to fight eachother. Think about it this way. If you were going to build two theme parks, would you build them on the same street? Hell no, you would build them ver away from eachother. Maximise ur exposure + customer base. Now think of it the same way for this. Release WaR now, and 40k in line 6 years. thatway people will play both games. Hell by the time people have finished with 40k you could bring out WaR again and live like fat rats!! Basically I give this a year b4 GW pull the plug |

Warhammer online is nice, I'd try it along with AoC. However, Warhammer 40K is something I'd definitely would play.

Originally posted by SWGforrevawell, maybe they are tired of RTSs, feel like the genre is used up, and could make the ultimate MMO. "The new age is upon us, yet the past refuses to rest in its shallow grave." |

Originally posted by airalith That doesn't make any sense, considering a GW representative was being interviewed along with the THQ rep in the announcement by GameSpot. They even specifically addressed the fact that the 40K MMO could draw players away from WAR: AJ: Interesting question. Firstly, EA Mythic is developing an MMO based on the distinct Warhammer Fantasy IP rather than any specific game, such as WFRP. Secondly, Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 have coexisted as very separate and successful properties for decades. And our plans certainly see that well-established trend continuing forever. At the very basic level, Warhammer is our high-fantasy IP, while Warhammer 40,000 is science fiction--and our customers certainly cope very well with that concept. I have been at Games Workshop for 20 years, and I have never seen arguments about whether Space Marines or Eldar can take to the field of battle against Orc Boar Boys or Dwarf Trollslayers. It really is that simple. This game (the 40K MMO) has the full backing of GW. They couldn't make it if it didn't. If you want a real harsh death penalty, go play Russian Roulet. - Hamzal |

Blizzard was working on a project called Ghost wich was based off of Starcraft if I remember right. That Ghost project was canned in favor of World of Warcraft. If Blizzard cans a project it was probably for good reason. I am sure they will revisit Starcraft someday. |

Originally posted by gpettYeaa I think Ghost wouldn't turn out the way they wanted in the end. It looked ok but nothing special. It looked very much like that 3D Command and Conquer RTS kind-a game... And OF COURSE we will see more StarCraft ^^ StarCraft is way a way more successful theme than WarCraft RTS wise!!! Not to mention the best RTS game created to date ;D

Originally posted by gpett I dont believe that they canned it due to World of Warcraft (these projects arent related except in the sense that they are both made by Blizzard). The speculation as to why it was cancelled could be anything from they didnt like the direction the game was taking or they didnt think it would sell (estimated release dates penning it for 2007 well into the then next generation of consoles). I agree though that I am sure they stop development on it for good reason and I am confident they will develop a new game based on the Starcraft universe sometime soon (and like most I have a feeling it just might be an MMO... or RTS and MMO). I cannot help but feel that Games Workshop wanted to beat Blizzard to the punch with a Sci-Fi 40'000/Starcraft-esque MMO since at this point it seems that WAR might have taken the top spot if it had not been for World of Warcraft (of course we will never know if any other game could have achieved that status). I hope its good but to be honest I will wait for a list of features and the first footage (whether CG or Alpha) to start forming an opinion. Oh and DuraheLL Ghost was never meant to be an RTS in any shape or form, but rather a stealth/action game. |

Originally posted by gpett Actually Blizzard pawned off Ghost to a 3rd party company they were working with, the quality was not to Blizzard's standards to they canned it. Has nothing to do with WoW. But your right they did it for a good reason it was crap and incredibly behind schedule a complete liability to their company's rep. No one really knows what other projects they'll take on WoW's so huge their development studio is already heavily over crowded and they're still hiring new people which up until WoW became a known fact was kind of rare to see them hiring so much. Hopefully they will take on another pc game soon thats not an MMO I kind of miss their regular games. Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED! |
