The character classes are set up where you become another ascended class.
The problem is the Necromancer... what should a Necromancer be before a Necromancer Necromancer? Or would a Necromancer be a first class or a Mage? If a Mage then a Necromancer what after being a Necromancer? and if a Necromancer when what?

Mage -> Necromancer -> ??? -> ???

Necromancer -> ??? -> ??? -> ???

Forging the Future

Does your design absolutely require the necromancer and other roles to be class based?  If not I would advocate that a player simply begins to learn spells and incantations that deal with the dead and over time they could surely be labeled as a necromancer.

The new paradigm:
PVP = Persistant Virtual Playground

The Necromancer is rightfully a perversion of the Cleric class it is also frequently portrayed as a subclass of  Wizard/Mage. SInce the Necromancer is usually evil aligned there is a problem with deriving the Necro from either Mage or Cleric. Since (evil) mage/Cleric is kind of lame as a class. I'd suggest using Shamam  ( generally associated with evil in eurocentric mythos ) as the base class with the Shaman being a curse/debuffer type. As an advanced Necro you could go with  Liche (sp?), which is an undead Mage basically that retains their own will.

Yes, the character class must be set up that way because of the storyline.

Yet the I would have to change how cleric class flow is and the mage class flow. I would have to check with someone about this.

I am a little sand pudding.

I agree with the poster above on making Lich the next level after Necromancer. Lich are technically more skilled in necromancy than their predecessors since the themselves are undead and have delved so deep into the arts. Whether Necro or Mage starts the class tree will depend on your storyline. If your lore has Order and Chaos paths, then getting Mage as the starting point would be better.

Generally I suggest it goes something like this:

Mage (Optional) --> Necromancer --> Lich --> Lich Lord/Lord of Death/any other creative class as a result of your storyline

More classes can be made if your look into your storyline. For example, in AoC they came up with a class called Herald of Xotli. Your storyline will really be the deciding factor for further classes.

A Necromancer is a Mage that deal with "death" magic. So maybe demons or spirits would be something to consider. The afterlife thing, what happens when we die??? How doea the Necromancer control it. There you have the next Necromancer Class

Hmm, Warlock (practices darker magic) then Blood Mage (someone who needs to make a sacrifice in order to gain power for their spells). Then Necromancer, then things like "Dark Summoner" and/or "Dread Lord" etc.

Just my 2 cents. Swords and Sorcery are not my forte.

well the way i see it you can call them sponge bob as long as your story says thats what there called.
think up some cool sounding names of  your own and you can make them do anything you like thats the art of fantasy and sci-fi the only true rule is the ones you make up yourself if you have a strong story line then people will buy into it.

just a little idea you might like for the necro type's allow them to take control of a someone they have beaten in PvP ( make it a clone of them as no 1 is going to stand around while you lvl using there dead body ) they would have limited health that could not be restored and you could only control one at a time this way it would give the Necro's a nice touch and bragging rights as they wonder into town with a copy of a high lvl PvPer in tow slowly  rotting away.
