It's been a long time waiting for something that captured the magic of AC, and that game is Vanguard.

Like AC was in the day, the highlight of the game is the wide open zoneless world with breathtaking vistas and unique architecture. The sense of exploration, of setting out to go anywhere and find something new.

It has an attribute and skill system that reminds me of AC.

The different human races and their different town styles is just like AC.

The PvP server is a free for all, like darktide.

The required specs for it are kind of ridiculous in comparison with Asheron's Call. Especially considering I can barely get more than 10-15 fps with 3ghz, 1 gig of ram, and a nvidia 7800gt. If they ever optimize the engine and make the game stable and squash a good majority of the bugs, I could see it being a decent comparison to Asheron's Call when it comes to wide open areas.

I get good FPS on my Radeon X800.
Radeon cards fair a lot better than Nvidia with this game, for some reason.

Upgrading to 2 gigs of RAM also makes a huge difference. A necessity given the scale of the environment and the no-zones approach.

Prom if you upgrade to 2 gigs of ram your FPS will skyrocket. It's a very Ram\Processor intensive game. Alot more strain on those than the VC just because of the way the game is rendered and processed.

Vanguard is sort of the antithesis of Asheron's Call in terms of actual gameplay, though. I loved that I could play AC very effectively on my own, whereas Vanguard is very much built to be a grouping game. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not an AC thing. I don't think you'll be seeing anything in the later levels of Vanguard like the one-against-a-hundred odds you'd find in Matron hives or Tusker dens. I liked that I needed friends to complete some of the big quests in AC, but I don't want a whole game based on that concept. I like stopping to smell the roses and having the ability to change what I'm doing as the whim strikes me. The need to group just to advance at a tolerable rate really makes my preferred MMO activities impractical. Sure, you make much better experience in AC while in a full group these days, but you can still do extremely well on your own.

Funny someone posted this.  AC was the first MMO that I put a lot of time into and one that I always think of when I play a new one.  I had the best experience in online game playing AC and I do feel the same thing when VG.   It also reminds me of UO as well, I think its safe to say it has a lot in common with the oldschool games.

As a former resident of Dereth, I too feel a sense of wonder in VG.  However, with my system AMD 3200, 2 gigs of ram, gf 6800 GT xtreme, SB Live 5.1 PCI, I can hardly play it.  And, if I get to a place like a town with a few players I come to a screeching halt.  Hopefully, something will change because I hate playing a slideshow.

TarValon, you should be able to play Vanguard with your current system... I play with an AMD 2800+, 1gig of RAM, and an Nvidia geforce 6200. Granted my system doesnt allow me to play at high graphics settings, but i dont have to run on lowest. The .ini tweaks that you can do really make a huge difference and is what made the game playable for me.  I do lag a bit in town, but the game is fun and runs at a playable speed.

I agree. I much prefer that style of adventuring. Hopefully they will adjust things to be more solo friendly, but I am not holding my breath.

Aside from that VG does everything else right IMO.

I'm sorry, but Vanguard is largely ass. I beta'd it and my S.O. bought it out of beta because she liked diplomacy in beta. It is *nothing* like AC, because AC is... you know, fun and lets you enjoy making your character the way you want.

It's a real pity that AC is so damn ugly that baby jesus cries when he sees it. If they would do an engine update (Throne wasn't nearly enough) and put it on par with AC2 they could triple their customers easily... I've had dozens of people play it and say, "God, it's fun as hell and the skill system is great, but I can't stand the graphics.. eq1 and daoc look better by 100%."

Vanguard takes some of the best elements from AC and melds them with great features from EQ and Ultima Online, along with modern advances seem in games like WoW. Plus they add in their own unique elements like Diplomacy.

Vanguard feels more like AC than any other game I've played so far. The sense of exploration, the strong lore, the questing, etc.

if thats what you liked about ac... well

most ppl like ac for its grear combat system and VG has just another wow clone combat system.
furthermore id say 90% of the ppl hyping VG now will quit it as soon as the next big release comes

The only reason you play AC over others is for the combat system? You're a real minority then. AC's combat has always been lacking, with it's simplicity, linear focus, and lack of variety. For a melee user you've basically got one auto attack you spam, and the only thing that ever changes is the equipment you're using. And magic is also focused along narrow channels, without having the variety in spell types found in other games.
The real reason to play AC was always it's world, it's quests, it's events, it's lore, and it's soloability.

But on the subject of combat systems, Vanguard has one of the best. You've got a lot of variety and tactical decisions in terms of yourself and your teammates. The combat is more dynamc than DAoC or WoW, given your options and how situational many powers are. Things like reactions, counterspells, finishers, etc.

And Vanguard isn't going anywhere. It's in it for the long haul with veteran team of dedicated guys who want to keep improving a game that has so much, a growing fanbase, and great community.
It's a game with incredible potential that will only grow with time.

I recently got back into AC after a 3 year break. I've been playing for alittle over a week. I wish I would have just stayed...but the past is the past. My main char right now on HG (hotlhren) is a lvl 30ish bow char with item/life magic. No real need for critter right now anyways with 2 hr lvl 7 buffs from buff bots.

AC is so addictive and I love pretty much everything about it...but the graphics do need a major upgrade. It's a shame the population is dwindling down to almost noone. I see people around towns but the dungeons seem empty besides the occasional person I happen to see. In the old days I wouldn't care if I saw someone in a dungeon but now I get wide-eyed when I make contact with another person.

I'm currently coming to grips that AC is....on life support. Because of that i'm trying to find another MMORPG because that's the only type of game I wanna play.

I'm checking out a game called Gods and Heroes or something like that. It seems pretty cool, but there's just nothing that compares to AC that I know of.

If any former/current AC players can recommend a good game please do so!!! Even if it's in BETA, i'm ok with any recommendations.

If you build it, they will come

Turbine is done with AC. They would rather cash in on brand name concepts with cookie cutter game mechanics than take a chance on an off the wall, original concept.  I think the game is amazing, the quests are wild and challenging, the PK poltics on Darktide are like nothing I have ever experienced,  the lore was much more engaging than anything i have played since, and the community is the best I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of.  However, Turbine is just not commited to making the game successful.

At this point, they should combine all the servers onto one and allow all characters to rename themselves.  They should bring thier graphics up to date.  They should release a new expansion and actually market it.  They should open a new pve and pvp server and allow players to choose between established servers and fresh ones.  Asheron's Call probably won't break any subscription records, but they could become a profitable franchise.  That's my two pyreals anyhow

Sounds like dreams of AC3 to me. :D

I played AC2 for 3 tears and loved it.  To this day AC2 is still the most fun I have ever had in an mmo.  Even Turbine's DnD and LOTRO beta 2,which are good games, fall short of that AC series addiction.  AC series has an appeal that is outside of what is now the "cookie cutter"  mmo. The skills/combat system,multi-factional pvp,portal/travel system, lifestones instead of gravestones,patron/vassel swearing, fellowships (class dependencies),solo content, community, repeatable quests,vaults,etc... are just a few that set AC series apart from other MMO's.  Graphics,IMO, in AC1 are just to out dated  from other MMO's to be a good contender any longer.  AC2 suffered with to many problems early on to keep a sizeable client base needed (so we've been told), though it was a good game. Especially after Legions Xpack,AC2 was a great game!        (yah,Tumeroks are cool too)

So,where does that leave Asheron's fans?     Only Turbine can tell us.   But, I'm ready to answer another   "Call"   :D

VG is a lot more of a grind than AC ever was. And much less original - it is more like a cookie cutter version of WOW with longer travel times and a huge death penalty. After playing it for a month, I saw very little that was either new or innovative.

AC was my first "real" MMORPG, and I played it for over 2 years.

AC - after almost 9 years - still has some of the most innovative content and gameplay of any game. But the badly outdated graphics are the killer - we have just all gotten too used to much better. If Turbine had not blown all it's cash on that horrible AC2 and instead updated AC, it would be much more active and a much more advanced game.
