I guess I ask this question from the fact that I've played quite a few MMOs in my time (AC1, AC2, EQ1, EQ2, CoH, WoW, AO, UO (private shard only), and a handful of other MMOs) and I'm beginning to wonder if I'm getting burned out from the fact I can't find an MMO where people feel more open to work together on things in the game. Even if it's just the classic static quests, or maybe something totally new, it really doesn't matter to me, because I can get the same experience of playing solo as I do from my stacks of single player games I own already. I think this MMO burnout for me is due to the lack of socialization I've been facing in the MMO population as of late. Sometimes I'll change servers and classes to see if I can net some friends, but it just doesn't seem to work anymore like it use to. Ultimately, I wonder if you think this burnout is an internal issue, external, or maybe a bit of both. Funnily enough, I don't play often like I use to either. I remember times where I could put down 8 hours at least on a Saturday in an MMO, anymore, two hours is my fill, even on a weekend day. So I think it's power leveling or grind based burnout to be sure. I just think it's solo based burnout, in that most folks are not apt to group like the use to at least in the games I've played. Go figure. -- Bridget |

I know the feeling. After going through countless MMO's (Some I loved some I hated), on the rare occasion I do find one that I enjoy enough to play, i'll get however many levels in, and then the next day I just don't feel like playing at all.

Originally posted by AmonRExactly, I remeber the first time i logged into AO I was like a kid in a candy store. I could barley contain myself. Now a days it does take more to keep my attention. Its like TV violence, once youve seen a decapitation your like wow that was cool but after the 50th one its like well I think Im gonna move onto to watching people being totaly dismembered only to find out that your like sigh this is borrrrrring. MMO story lines used to suck me in quikly. Now if the story isnt immediatly gradifying I just cant force myself to like it. Another thing about MMOs that is getting old is the endless reading. Every quest is just a jumble of words after awhile. AoC says that every NPC will have voice overs, finaly a game that realizes that if we wanted to read we would go to the library lol. M |

yeah i'm burnt out, i played eve for 1.5 years, then wow for almost 1.5 years, now nothing really excites me. Maybe pirates of the burning sea. I'm not a fan of the standard toolbar games like vanguard, lineage2, rf online, all the korean ones, warcraft was alright cause I made one button masher macros to avoid too much toolbarage.
Edit: that's why I whore these boards now since my other subs are done :P

Funny enough I usually leave an MMO for a solid week to do other things [my class work usually requires me to do so and I just plain get bored], but I think either my tastes are changing or that everyone other MMO is just a rehash of the same paradigm. When in the hell are they going to allow players to have near permanent effect on the environment? Bleh! That at least would be worth some interesting times there. :( -- Bridget |

I'm currently in a state of MMO burnout, haven't played one in months, and really have no interest in getting addicted again until WAR launches.

I'm burned out too and I agree with the difficulty finding the social aspect like I once did. I thought for awhile it was just me getting older but I think I'm looking for the right game design. Balance of depth, graphics, story, content and social make-up. I like Mythic's RvR (PvP when I choose to) approach to PvP even though I rarely do it. I think I need to find a mature guild of fun loving, team oriented people.
I can play regularly and work towards team goals for everyone. Any mature guilds out there? The less you take yourself seriously, the better |

Yeah, I think the fact I decided to play EQ2 instead of trying some younger MMOs is what's stifling my enjoyment. I'm not down on the general design of EQ2, it's your typical 2nd gen MMO, mostly questing with some crafting, and limited PVP, and a refined 3d engine. So it's not bad, but it's not stellar, earth shattering, and all the other action movie words you can imagine analogous to exciting. But it does have some interesting parts, like the voice dialog that some characters do have. It's certainly more polished than MxO. -- Bridget |

I'm haveing a total game burnout. No mmo's doing it for me lately, just nothing in the way of player driven content or worlds. But fps games are near dead also, anyone who's played r6 vegas knows what I'm talking about. I'm just waiting for that next classic in any genre, but no developer seems to want to take the chance on one. No one wants to risk those initial subs and wait it out for a solid veteran player base.

I may be burnt out a little bit, but I keep busy with other games like Guitar Hero, and playing Wii. GunZ, Wolfenstien: ET, True Combat Elite, and Warrock (when it works) are for my trigger finger itch. >:) I definately agree that most MMOs have moved toward solo play... Which defeats the purpose right? I honestly would buy a single player version of half of the MMOs out there. Star Wars Galaxy, City of Heroes, Matrix Online, and MAYBE even WoW. Until then I just play other games until I crave some grind again.
Oh, and taking 15 credit hours, and somehow managing to keep my job eats up the rest of my time |

I wouldn’t say I am burnt out on the MMOG genre, but I am much less tolerant of crap games. I have learned what I do and do not like and to read between the lines of all the ridiculous developer hyperbole. If I do get suckered in to a bad game, I quit without hesitation.

Originally posted by atkafighterhahahha yes guitar hero rocks, okay so back to the topic. I had an mmo burnout just last year didnt like it one bit because i was bored. Then guitar hero came and drove my attention away from mmos for a while. I then got back into mmos when i went to my local gamestop and picked up FFXI and Phantasy Star Universe. Haven't had one since but i feel one coming, hopefully granado espada can entertain me for a while.

I burn out all the time, and am constantly swapping games hoping to find the original fun I had back in the '90s with UO. I had a great group of people to play with then and it was great fun. As often happens with these games that group slowly disolved and I was left trying to recapture that same feeling. I have played them all numerous times and cant seem to find the same thing. Its mostly my fault as I am shy (that original UO group found me not the other way around). So I wander from game to game as the solo action gets boring. In my rambling way I guess my point is: These games are about the people in them. If you can find a group of people you enjoy playing with it takes longer to burn out. Forgive me if I am simply pointing out the obvious. |

Burnout is just something that happens, atleast to me. After long enough playing MMOs primarily, I will take 3-6 months to play other games/ do other stuff, I called it "football season", but i have taken breaks at other times, sometimes you just need to take a break from the hamster wheel that MMOs are. |

Unfortunatly I'm stuck in the same boat. I've played a fair few mmo's, and have gone back to two (EQ2 and WoW) and now I'm regretting it. It was nice to have an expansion pack to add to it but even that's worn off. Everything is exactly the same when you get out of the starter areas. Actually thinking of getting dosbox and playing Albion again. Damn near one of the best ye olde dos rpgs I'd say :P |

Yea, I’m suffering from burnout right now, I want to play a new game, but when I think of the commitment, I just cannot get into it. That's life, I guess. I mean, I want to get home from work, relax kill some orcs, for a few hours but it seem the time commitment is just too much with the new batch of games, Vanguard. I wonder, with the time needed to play and the system requirement, how do people afford to play these games and have a life. |

Yes and No. a while ago, I was so burned out on the MMO genre that I purchased an xbox360. It was fun, lots of fun. I tried several mmo's again, but I just couldn't get back into them. Right now, I can only play MMORPG's that are unique and diffrent from the rest. I tried Scions of Fate and Lord of the rings online again, but I couldn't get into them because I all experienced before. I am absolutely hooked on Granado Espada because of its uniqueness.
My advice to players who are burned out on the genre: try the rare few games that are not part of the mainstream. Try EVE, try Auto Assault, try Granado Espada, and in the future, try Age of Conan and Aion. |
