May I suggest Adellion, a world created for roleplayers, by roleplayers!
It has enforced RP, and people who do not RP mysteriously catch a rare disease for a while. It also has devs as Cultural Leaders to drive the stories and events at the beginning, is skillbased (with hidden progress!), and has probably the greatest realism I've yet to see in a game, and it is still a fantasy game! The game is not out yet, nor has it gone into beta, so it will still be a few months at least before you'll be able to play it, but the community is great, and there is much roleplaying to be done out of the game before it starts if you wish. Take a look, and see what you think! |

When I started reading this post, I thought that an only Role Playing MMORPG would be great for devs because lots of people like RP and I think they'll easily find gamers. No doubt most WoW players would quit this game and start a new adventure in a real RP world, so Adellion, if the devs work correctly on it shall find a large community.
Guild Wars is a good MMO (even though Arena Net call it a COORPG) for playing RP, because all the world, except the outposts and cities are instanciated, and so you can easily find a guild of RPers, wherever you're from and RP in this world easily I think. I haven't tried it already but there's been a long time since I thought about it and I often promise myself I'll find a Guild and play RP, but I'm the kind of people who hardly do what they planned to Neverwinter Nights 2 is a really good game of course but in order to play in multiplayer mode, it's better to play in LAN because online it would be hard to find RPers and meet them at least once a week and play only together. Another good game for playing could be EVE Online ; as to what I read about it in magazines it seems to have its own life, and to be a real alternative world that players can change by themselves, but I don't really know if it is really RP or not |

well, that is a pity. EVE is the best game to roleplay, as long as you understand that roleplaying isnt killing orcs, rescueing princess and talking like "thee" and "thou". |

Thank you for all your answers. I went to Adellion.com and I signed in in the forums. I even started RP in two threads of the Interactive Roleplaying section. But do you know if it's going to be free or payed after the beta testing ends? I decided not to ask the community there I was a bit...shy

you shoulda been around for Trials of Acension
sadly the game is on it's death bed and will probaly never stand to show it's potentional. WHat I'd pray to see is stil a game like horizions ((the real one david allen tried to make)) or Traisl of Ancesion finaly come out and show us what a RP oriented world can be. You should check out my thread in the pub section and post. seems people aren't realy following me and deciding to flame me but oh well. |

Personally, although I am still at a low level, Vanguard seems to have an excellent community of Rp'ers on the server Florendyl. The only weird thing I've seen yet is a lady selling tea in general chat. If you claim to not like tea she puts you on her ignore list. (very odd i know)

The best games I've come across for roleplaying are:
Nexus TK - Kingdom of the Winds EVE Online City of Heroes/City of Villains Nexus TK is a very old game but it has a very strong community build up through player run content. The game mechanics are terribly outdated and the graphics look like something from a crappy doll-maker website, but that's to be expected from it's age. I used to play it but since they changed the graphical style I'm really turned off from it. Back in the late 90's when this game was in it's prime I really loved it's distinct atmosphere, which was based off of mythical Korea. Now it's not much, but the key behind it is player run content. I can't stress how important player run content is in a good Roleplaying game. EVE Online is the best sci-fi RPG that I know of. The graphics are beautiful and you really get a feel for the immense size of the universe. This is a great place to roleplay if you're into science fiction. Most players of EVE are adults, which the majority of are males. EVE is a very complicated game, though. It's a learning experience every day no matter how long you play; but don't get me wrong, that's actually a good thing! I recommend grabbing one of the 14-day free trials if you can just for a change of pace at least. Because this game is so enormous, I haven't had a chance to experience any player run content. City of Heroes has a great roleplaying server. (Virtue) I've never played a more inviting game. It's easy to pick up and fun to play. The game mechanics, in my opinion, are really great. The player run content in CoH is very good. If you can find a close-knit supergroup (guild) or coalition then you'll have no shortage of roleplayers to socialize or fight crime with. It's a great community and I recommend it personally. At the moment what I'm really craving is a fantasy MMORPG with a lot of originality and extensive player run content. Unfortunately these kinds of games seem to be virtually non-existent. If you do find anything like this, please let me know! =========== |

If you only want RP, you should play SWG The whole game was designed for inviduality and player interaction. You can have your own house and get what furniture you want. Character creation is advanced and you have hundreds of appearences to create. The whole game have a live story line and there six movies to find inspiration from...
I played it before the famous NGE, so im not proud to recommend the game to anyone... But if you want hardcore or casual RP, then SWG is your game. This is no opinion, its fact. |

Just in case any of you were thinking of buying Vanguard Saga of Heroes, I strongly suggest that you research the Vanguard forums first. If any of you are already playing Vaguard and are happy, then you have had more luck than me. I have just cancelled after three weeks of annoyance and frustration with the game mechanics and also the absence of effective support. Meanwhile if anyone finds a newish game where one can play solo, I would be obliged for the information. |

I have come across many MMOs and the problem with close to all that I have found. None of them really have any role play involved. The only RPs I have been able to perform were in Muds. But all of the text in muds can get painful on the eyes. And the typing oh my god the typing. I find that the people that get these MMOs are not really in it for the Role play eperience but to power level there character and try to sell them on ebay or something for newbies that just started. I guess if I want role play and story I need to stick to Muds or table tops.
I reject your reality and substitute it with my own. Sygfreed |

The search for the perfect rp mmorpg may be a rather long one given the realities of the market. What Id recommend is to draw up a list of mmorpgs that you like for other features and then take a look at their forums etc and see if there is are rp guilds or community. Good luck. |

Originally posted by ferndipQFT. In NWN 1 and 2 you can find some of the best roleplaying communities. Downside is that they are not exactly "MMOs" Most of the active servers have about 20+ people on at peak hours, but on the super active servers with 60+ people on at peak hours... I've found that the RP is lacking. I have yet to play online with NWN2 (the online didn't work for me, and then my internet crashed on the computer with NWN2 on it, and then then windows stopped working) but I'm sure it is as excellent as NWN1. |
