So, I want to get a degree in England in a programming related course (Computer Science(SC)/SOftware Engineering(SE)).
I've done some research and I finaly got my 6 options. What I would like is for you guys to:
- tell me if they are good options
-put them in order of quality from best to worst (if that isn't to much work)

I'll start by saying what I want to do for a job:

I want to become a software programmer, and hopefully get a programming job in the games industry(not necessarily after I leave university..).

These are the courses I choose (from what seems best -> worst), togheter with the other courses I can change to during 1st/2nd years:

1. University of Southampton, Computer Science - universityofsouthampton.immediacy.co.uk/default.aspx
(CS w/Artificial Inteligence - universityofsouthampton.immediacy.co.uk/default.asp)
(SE - universityofsouthampton.immediacy.co.uk/default.aspx)

2. University of York, CS - www.cs.york.ac.uk/prospectus/admissions-leaflets/overview_of_programmes_available.pdf

3. University of Hull, CS - www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/ug/outline.htm
(CS w/Games Development - www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/ug/outline.htm)
(Computer Software Development - www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/ug/outline.htm)

4. Newcastle University, CS(Games and Virtual Environments) - www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/course/G450
(CS - www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/course/G400/Computing_Science)
(CS(SE)- www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/course/G600/Computing_Science_(Software_Engineering))

5. University of Sheffield, SE - www.shef.ac.uk/prospectus/2007/coursedetail.php
(CS - www.shef.ac.uk/prospectus/2007/coursedetail.php)

6. Durham University, SE - www.dur.ac.uk/resources/faculty.handbook/degrees/frameworks/g600.pdf

So, those are the courses I picked. I picked them based on theire programs and contents.... What would you say?

Thx

Can't really comment on the courses, I'll let someone who is studying CS to. I do however have to say:

  1. Hull is horrible, I've been there. It was also voted the worst place to live in the UK.
  2. Keep in mind the 'with' courses aren't always as good as you may hope. For example if you did do CS with AI, you may hardly do any AI, while the same course elsewhere may do 50/50. It's up to you to contact the course leader and find out for yourself exactly how much is taught.
  3. If you do go to Southampton, you're like 20 mins away from me. :P
  4. If you do go to Southampton, do not go to halls. That was a major turn off for me when I was looking for my university. The rooms are tiny and look like prison cells.

You mean any hall in Southampton?... I'm not thinking of living anywere else during my first year.... are they really that bad?... Southampton seemed really cool.. still, I always had some passion for York.... semms really cool, and a rather beatifull place.

Still waiting for those reviews!

From what a friend of mine said, all halls in Southampton are bad.

Looks like there is noone elese around to reply... anyway, let's keep chatting...

What do you have to say about Manchester University? While they don't really say much in theire website, it seems to be well placed in the Times list (much like Durham)... and I like it when they say you have a big variety of options and it is a versatile  course..

And another thing... is there any big benefit in taking an integrated masters over a Baccaurelate (however you write it...) and then taking a postgraduate degree separatly if needed?

Manchester University? Sorry, never intended to go there, so I'm not sure. Also, do keep in mind that some Universities specialise in certain fields. For example in the Times guide, my university is ranked 69th as an 'all rounder' University. Nevertheless, Bournemouth is known for being a very good media school, so when you have a look at the media University guide, we were fourth in 2004 (can't find a more recent one) and the only University to get the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice award.

Keeping that in mind, one such CS specialised course that I can recommend is BSc Computer Science at University College London. One of my friend's brothers graduated from that course last summer, and now works for an IT firm in Portugal. He's had many requests, from big companies like IBM, to work for them.

As for your last question, I'm sorry I'm not familiar with an intergrated masters. Do you have someone in your high school who could guide you with that?

I don't really want to go to London... or even the South, I only included Southampton in that list because it was the only South University outside London (excluding Cambrige/Oxford) that had a better rating in the CS field than York...

So your friend came to work to Portugal???..... Was he even aware how bad we get paid here and that we have lots of problems with the economy...? Anyway, is he enjoying it? Earning good money?

About that masters.... most courses I posted allow you to change during the first year to other realted courses... and if I'm not mistaken those courses include the Integrated Masters version of the course, so no big deal, I can get that info once I'm in the uni.

Tomorrow I'll write my personal statement, insert the pretended course (after revising all of them, and the prices/location) and send it! Wish me good luck!

P.S. So now you're part of the staff??? When did that happen? Grats

Try Huddersfield decent nightlife, 24hr trains to Manchester and Leeds if you get bored too. As for courses and facilities its very good I visited several universities whilst looking for the right one for me and well it was the best. I have a friend at sheffield doing the Software Engineering course too he isnt too impressed with it all and is looking to transfer to another university for his last year.

Well thats my 2 cents hope it helps.
