Bashing popular books is like cool, that's why people say they sucks, read them and they are pretty good, of course they are not close to the Chronicles of Pern serie (if you like dragons but dislike magic lol) that has a lot more depth to it, but well Anne McCaffrey got a lot more experience writting ;) (Cant go wrong with the first female writer to win a nebula award in 1968 for "Dragonrider" one of the chronicles of pern)

Popular books never win any awards if you didn't notice. I tend to respect the opinions of critical, experienced readers rather than some kids that loved Harry Potter. That's why I read literary reviews and check up on what a novel has won before I read it. People told me Wheel of Time was good, but after reading 6 of them it is just cliche rehashed bullshit. Then I looked it up and it hasn't won anything, and respected critics didn't give it rave reviews. Go figure.

In Eragon's case, it hasn't won anything at all.

I agree on LotR series however I think Prisoner of Azkaban could have been better.

Goblet of Fire was a downright awful adaptation of the book and, generally speaking, was really poorly directed and edited which is a shame since it was one of the better books if not the best.

C'mon now.  Eragon and Eldest were entertaining books but they are far from great literature as you seem to agree.  They're TOTALLY cliche'd and predictable yet that hasn't stopped so many of us from rewarding Chris Paolini's efforts with out hard-earned dollars (I borrowed Eragon but bought Eldest, the final will be library check-out!)

That's what i mean, they are far from literature classics, but they dont suck like lot's of people said in this thread , i m not saying that they are the best, but they are entertaining. What i meant was, lot's of people are bashing it and saying it's utter crap without even reading it because it's cool to bash popular things, even if not perfect those books are fun, and that's what good books are made of, fun

Of course you can always compare it to what i call classics like, M. Moorcock's Corum, Elric and Hawkwind sagas, to R. Zelazny's "Amber Saga", or even R. Hobbs's "Assassin triology" and it will fall short, but it's still a fun and entertaining reading.... not some Salman Rushdie "highly inflatted by controversial content using, utter crap".

Sadly if you are an avid reader, your disapointment will not end with this.

Is it any wonder, despite numerous offers and big sacks of cash, Terry Pratchett has never allowed it to happen to his books.

Until...

I'll be tuning in on Sunday just to see how badly they do this.

Pessimistic? me?

I liked MMOs better when gamers didn't play them, and just geeks did.

I agree 100% with the OP. Worst movie I've seen in years. If you liked this movie, you are either under 10 years old or midly retarded (pwetty fwying dwagon...YAY!!). I've never felt as though a movie was trying to rush me out of the theatre quite like Eragon did...though it didn't have to push, I would have left willingly.

I understand that movies never truly do a book justice, but to butcher/copy/paste a good epic fantasy story into this crap storm is just downright laughable. I now have to go back and read the first book over again to get the stain that is this movie out of my brain.

Oh, by the way, SOMEONE FORGOT TO PUT ARYA' ELF EARS ON!

This movie sucked so hard I can't even to be able to warn fans of the book to stay away....

I went to see this movie last night, I have no idea what it is about, I left about 15 mins into the movie, the first 15 mins were pretty bad, and I thought the idea of wasting so much time in this movie as oppose to playing with the girl I picked up yesterday morning was too alarming to allow happen. From what everyone seems to be saying I did not make miss anything. Is this not the first part of three other movies or something like that? Bring it on down now.

It was as I expected:  An "okay" movie.  There was a lot of potential, but the script was pretty lame and the story itself was rushed.  Especially since the books are a trilogy.  I think the film speaks for the idea of looking at the parts too closely and forgetting to look at the whole.  Something tells me the following movies will feel a little spliced when watched together.

I havent read the book so cant say about that.  Saw the movie and thought it was ehhh.  It was like they took Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and mooshed em together and voila!  Eragon!  I thought the ending was kind of underwhelming too.  Ohhh a big battle a la Lord of the Rings.  Wait, just the dragon and the demon thing flying around..../sigh.

im gonna state all the problem with the movie and compare it with the book (maybe sad but i feel this should be done)

Problem: 1.there arent ment to be guards in carvahall and the time which the guard scenes took up should be used in bits that they missed out.
2.Roran (Eragons cousin) leaves for the wrong reasons he is ment to leave because he wants to get married to his girlfriend katrina in the film he leaves because hes afraid he will get recruited.
3.Saphira grows way...too quickly she doesnt just transform into a big dragon while shes flying she grows over a few days.
4.Eragon is too old in the book hes ment to be 15 going on 16 but in the film hes 17.
5.Eragons uncle doesn’t die like that hes ment to burn in a fire were hes rescued and taken to i think its Horsts house were he dies of a fever.
6.Angela the fortune teller person is in the wrong city as thats were all the villagers were killed and she ment to be were Jeod lives which is another city oh and jeod isnt in the film.
7.Urgals look wrong they are ment to have horns.
8.Eragon is ment to be captured were he finds Arya but instead in the film he goes and rescues her also murtag came in at the wrong time and was ment to shoot durza in the end but instead Eragon does.
9.Arya is ment to be unconscious through the whole journey to the varden.
10.giant urgals called the kull are ment to be foloing them not just normal urgals.
11.when they reach the waterfall eragon is ment to say some special words to open the stone wall to the varden.
12.3 characters arew missing the twins and orik who is a dwarf.
13.there is not one dwarf i see in the film and there arel ike hundreds in the book.
14.some random character the one with blondish grey hair and has a staff i thought maybe he was one of the twins but im not rly sure.
15.urgals in the battle were not all ment to die so quickly they were ment to fight each other when durza was killed.
16.durza is riding..well i dont know wtf that thing is and well its not in the book.
17.i shouldve put this problem further back but just remembered.they didnt even go through the Hadarac desert.
18.murtag is ment to be freed were he fights in the battle.
19.galbatorix armies are not even ment to be in the battle only the urgals.
20.eragon is ment to get his armour and dragon armour from the dwarves.
21.saphira was not close to death in the book only eragon was.
22. i missed 3 other problems out which i just remebered now brom is ment to die by the razac and the razac dont die in the first or even the second book but im not sure if they were killed cause well they sorta dissapeared.and eragon should be chasing the razac but in the film the razac are chasing them.

There is probably other problems but well cant think of them anyway i just wnated to point out how many problems there were cause i rly liked the book and the director or whoever made the film ruined it oh and galbatorix shouldnt be in the film at this point and were the hellis solembum the werecat he was cool in the book.

Do you agree wth me or not?

Yes
Some of it not all
No
Undecided
Don't Care (dont even know why i read it)

i would just like to comment on two of the points that the guy who opened the eragon topic said.

point.1:eragon and arya dont travel to ellesmera till the second book and so this wouldnt be in the movie and ajihad and murtag wouldnt get attacked by urgals until the beginning of the second book aswell so they also wouldnt be in the movie but all the rest is correct.

Sure, but the first book ends with the battle (if I'm not mistaken) but the film goes a bit further.. they showed arya travelling alone to Ellesmera.... and they showed murtagh alive and kicking next to Eragon a few days after the battle.... they went after the Urgals right after the battle ended.. right? I'm not sure on this point though.

Joe, that's a pretty narrow-minded way to approach reading.

I have dozens of books by various authors on my shelves that have never won any awards, yet are still well-written and enjoyable. I'm not defending any particular series against your personal tastes, just saying that you can't limit yourself to award-winning books. Anyhow, I disagree with critics on a regular basis.

Eragon sucked ass, though. It's rare that I won't finish a series I've started, but that one I had trouble finishing the first book. Ugh. And the movie...! Well, I got in for free and I still feel like I got the raw end of the deal.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

Oh, I agree that you should read books that may interest you, regardless of what critics say. All I was trying to say is that I have no intention of reading Eragon just because some kids tell me it's a good book. I need to hear it froma credible source, or have some personal interest in it.

As I said before, the last time I started a series based on the reviews of a fan-based discussion, I started the Wheel of Time. After 6 books of nauseatingly cliche plotlines and characters, I dropped the series.

I find it best to stick to authors you like. You are rarely dissappointed. I'd recommend some Gene Wolfe for off-the-beaten-path sci-fi/fantasy, or Ursula Le Guin. But to each his own. I am just sick to death of these "underdog turns hero" plotlines.
