A simple truth-"What people want and what is good for an mmo is not always the same thing"-mrw0lf

I just responded to one of those polls on the side of the web site, and when the results posted it said that 8.2% of respondents play MMORPG's more than 16 hours a day?

Is this for real?  For any of you that do...how long has this been going on?  A week or two, or are you able to sustain this for several months? (or even years)

Does it bother you at all to be doing this? I love playing games, been doing it for over 20 years and on a few occasions (when the wife/family are out of town) I've been able to play for like 12 hours.  It actually made me physically ill on every occasion. I felt nausious, my arse hurt like hell, my circulation to my legs was cut off. (hey, I'm old) and my head was actually dizzy.

Heck, I've had weekends where I've played like 8 hours Frid/Sat and Sunday.. .and I really started to feel like I was missing part of life. (fortunately the feeling passed by the next weekend)

I'm not trying to slam anyone here who plays a lot.. just curious if there really are people who "live" in a virtual world.

Why do you spend so much time playing MMO's

Its cheap entertainment
I always wanted to be a Night Elf (or Orc)
I have no life, and I must scream
If I win the lottery, its buh-bye gaming
Angela refuses to leave Brad for me
Nasa isn't taking applications anymore
TV really sucks these days
How else can I get away from the wife or G/F w/o leaving home?
Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!
What is this "real life" you speak of?

Most people do not play 16+ hours a day. Yes 8% do, but that's 8% of how many? A few dozen? In other words 5 people play these games too much and, unsurprisingly, also read the forums and post too much.

If you check a site with real data on hours playing games, such as the Daedalus Project, you will see that the average MMO player will play his or her MMO for about 20 hours a week. This sounds like a lot, until you find out the same gamer usually only watches about 8 hours of TV. By contrast, non-gamers watch nearly 28 hours of TV a week... In other words, people in general spend about 28 hours on "electronic recreation"... so that MMORPG players are usually replacing one recreational activity with another.

Back to the 16+ hour thing... The only way anyone could do that is if he or she has no job, no school, and so on... Anyone who had to work 40 hours/week would not be able to do 16 hours/day of gaming.

i play around there like around 8 - 9 hours a day. Since i dont have a job i need something to entertain me, so i go to online gaming. I voted for "tv really sucks these days" yea its true too.

Back in the UO year 1 days Id say 16 hours was a pretty normal session for me... I wasnt working and I would just wake up around 7am and play UO until probably midnight or later... sleep then do it again. Obviously I ate, washed, etc but other than that all I did was play UO for about 2 years.

When EQ came around I did a lot of long sessions there too. If your wanted your Dwarven Work Boots and you wernt lucky (Im not) you could count on 24-48 hours in that stupid Haunted House place that I cant even remember the name of now. Mine took over 30 hours to get and my wife even did some keyboard sitting for me while I caught a few zzzzz's between respawns...

We must be insane

Yeah of course there are people that play 16+ hours a day. There are people with too much money in this world and who really cares what they do, if they want to play an mmo 16 hours a day let them. Other examples of people who would play 16+ hours would be a gold farmer or a GM (maybe for some games), both are mmo jobs. Mmorpgs are above what a game is, just go on ebay and type in lineage 2 to see how much money people are making for playing an mmo. It's very profitable for doing literally nothing.

Yes, as sickening as it is there are definitly people who play 16+ hours a day. There was actually a man ( More like a creature ) that played an mmorpg (runescape) 20 hours a day.. 20 hours a fucking day for over 2 years. It was proven in many ways that it was true, because alot of people thought he autoed or rotate shifts on his account so he proved them wrong. But for the most part theres a very small percent of people who play that much thank god.

People who play 16 hours a day are mostly the unemployed.

No student or person working can do it. No successful individual in life can often do it either(as being a success often requires working). Not only are they not in school or employed but it's likely they aren't actively pursuing either.

Does it bother me that people do this? Not really. It's like any other addiction in the world. It's  unfortunate but not much can realistically be done. The onus is on these people to realize they need to cut back because truthfuly, those +7 gauntlets don't mean squat a few months later.

If push came to shove, they could feasibly play 8 hours a day and 16 hours on the weekend for a total of 72 hours a week and still hold down a job/go to school and still get a decent amount of sleep. That time commitment will guarantee you to be a dominant success in any mmorpg. Don't really need to go past that(unless they have nothing else to do in life).

back at the peak of my WoW addiction i would go to work from 9-5 get home and hop online from 5:30pm-3/4am.  Raiding...

I'm glad I quit.  Honestly I know from my own experience, that raiding for 8hrs plus can be a life killer.  I lost my job and almost my wife over that frakkin game.

During the first 2 years of SWG i could play 20 hours straight as i just finished high school and wanted to take a break from school and well my mom makes over 200k a year so she always bought me what ever i wanted plus thats when SWG was the best after that it just fell apart. Plus if i sleep more than 3 hours it makes me feel sick.

I've been guilty of spendings hours playing mmorpgs in the past, never as long as 16 hours though. Never again though, if mmorpgs persist in being excessively time-intensive then I'll doubt I will play them again.

I wish I had that problem....

Unless you aren't fully revitalized, then I guess it wouldn't be that great. Still, I wish I can surivive on that much sleep...I could accomplish so much, like more game time!

Or maybe something more important, like studying for damn finals.  :(

If anyone in college can post more than 5 hours a day in an MMO, I will gladly admire them. Hell, make it 3 hours.

Aye friend, im in college and i got huge essays and assignments to conquer before like..say next week lol. It's crunch time. But i do play about 5-6 hours a day i suppose...i play WoW from...4:40 to 10:30 and on some other days that i dotn have class i play from 1ish to 11 with breaks and chores in between..dinner and so forth.

Though my computer is next to my kitchen, between our living room and the kitchen so im always communicating with the rest of my family which kills the immersion and stuff, but it also keeps me sane. If i was all alone in my room i dont think i'd ever be able to turn my computer off...i'd just be glued to the screenn.

Well at one point in my life, I would just sit from 6 am till 3 am.  This was when i was "into" Everquest I.  It was very fun in my opinion at that point because I had nothing else to do.  I had no job, so there was no real reason to leave other then  eat, sleep occationally, and of course you have to visit some friends inbetween.

As time has past on I slowly started not playing as much, and even at some times not playing at all for 3-4 days in  row.  It took a while for me to come to this stage.  But i was playing rpg's at a young age.  My father would say, "Go outside like everyother kid".  I wouldn't listen and continued to play for massive amounts of time.

Now I am rarly at home so I only put in like 3-6 hours a week, but i like this better. It gives me time to get together with friends and have social fun.
