I spent six months of my life playing WoW, then I stopped playing, gave account to a friend and removed WoW from my PC and that was enough for me. After that I tried loads of other MMO's and that WoW isn't even good. Few weeks ago I played WoW a bit and I didn't like it at all anymore.

Its all about opinion. Games, music, etc. Saying one is better over another is like me saying, "Try an onion, you'll love it." People like what they like. If a game has you enjoying yourself, more power to you. Thats what we are all in it for anyway. I play WoW, but I find my biggest problem to be with the community of the game in general. And stack on top of that my preference to roleplay my character and you can see my meaning. Even on the RP servers theres alot of insults and negative behavior. Not to mention people who play on the RP servers simply so they can cause grief. But, even though I have alot of horror stories, Ive restarted my account 3 times. Its a pretty casual game, and for someone with a steady job I can log on for an hour before bed and still feel I accomplished something. In the long run, Id have to say I enjoyed DAOC more. My fiance and I were in a great guild, and eventually she became the leader and we had some great PVP, raids, guild hunts. But its all releative to the player. Play what you like, man. Enjoy and have fun. That goes for everyone.

WoW is alright sometimes. If you can get into a good guild and make some friends on the way, then it will prolly end up being very fun. You dont always have to just grind, quest, raid, or lvl. |

I have to ask though Googelz, have you even tried the other mainstream MMOs? If not, most of them have a free trial, look around before becoming too entrenched. Ive seen a lot of players go for WOW first, never try anything else for months, then are totally surprised when they do find a game they really like. No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. |

To the TC/OP:
Enjoy it while it lasts, but don't neglect the rest of your life(be it school. job. or significant other) you will end up regretting it in the end. Trust me =) |

Firstly, nice thread, good read. Hits home, real hard. I played from the first hour (literally) of the first day (we got the game a little earlier in australia due to time differences and as soon as the servers came up we were on) until about December 2005. From September 05 i pretty much quit but got drawn back in a few times until december when i sold my account. I STILL didnt take WoW off my PC and the guy who bought my account used to get me to log on and grind with him to help him level one of his other characters on his orginal account, he now has level 60; hunter, rogue (mine) and druid and he's STILL loving it since joining on that first day with me.
Personally i think its a great great game with awesome graphics, great support and a beautiful world thats a pleasure to look at and run around in. My first look off the dam in Loch Modan during the beta was breathtaking (especially when i leapt off it) and the first time i managed to climb to the spot height at the top of Iron Forge (gnomish airstrip) i was also pretty happy with myself and the view. I loved the game but why then did i stop if not to break out of the addiction which i was quite happy dealing with? I couldn't play endgame seriously... thats the main reason... actually its 80% of the reason why i quit playing. I was an aussie playing on an american server and even to raid with one of the aussie guilds on lightbringer (or one of the oceana servers) i would have still been required several times a week for quite a few hours and i didn't have the time to put into that.. i have a girlfriend that's not made up of 1's and 0's (much to the confusion of some of my WoW mates who still think girls are hot night elves) and strangely (here comes the sarcasm which is due pretty much right about now) enough she dosn't understand why a guy would ignore her for hours upon hours on end when they havn't seen her all day because of work and then just want to play a computer game instead of (cough) eating dinner together (cough cough) or going out for drinks with friends or whatever else (personally we play basketball in the same mixed team amongst other activities).
So basically what im saying i guess..... is that i LOVE WOW and although i LOVE IT i just can't play it because it just DOES NOT cater for casual gamers. You just arn't part of the "Team" you never get the "Items" that apparently make a good RPG character and it just dosn't seem like fun anymore... it's a crying shame. if ANYONE can suggest a MMO thats populated by a shitload of casual players not hard core gamers then i'd be happy to know what it is... have fun guys.. This forum is the "General Forum" subjects relating to "mmorpg's" and therefore this topic fits just fine here. If we limited this forum to just those mmorpg's that weren't otherwise represented it would be pretty quiet here |

you wanna quit?
Agreed. Think about all those hours, days, months and years you've spent in front of a computer screen when you could be living life. Playing MMOs is fine, but when you can't quit or when you neglect other areas of your life, you should deinstall and do something else. Hell, there are even rehab centers now for people addicted to online games. Sad. http://www.TheGamersAssociation.com |

Most people play MMOs for the trill of having a second life and being able to do things in the second life that they can't do in real life. In real life I am a 33 year old married father that is an IT professional, but in game I can be an epic hero questing on mighty adventures for fame and fortune. It is this escape from reality that is addictive, just like why people use drugs, to escape reality.
I can't count the number of times I have tried to quit Warcrack. Blizzard has created their own legal drug. Moderation is thrown out the door for many, many people when they play games like WoW. Unlike tradition video games, the MMO player is compelled to play every chance to be able to keep up with the Jones. Everyone is compelled to play as much as the next person. The 30 year old parent with a full time job feels compelled to keep up with the 17 year old that is off on spring break. The 13 year old that has a bright academic outlook starts to let his studies drop in order to keep up with his 20 something guildmates that have made whatever MMO their second fulltime job. It is the beauty and the curse of MMOs. The beauty is you always feel that you have something to work towards. But the curse is that you have to spend countless hours in order to keep up with the next guy or girl. I really got into WoW big time shortly after my daughter was born. At first it really worked out well, she slept all day, I got to play WoW and just had to do the occasional diaper chance. But then soon she was crawling and then walking and my while my free time with her should have been 100% directed towards her, often I would be come distracted by the game. While I never let the game come before taking care of her, I can easily see how some people could allow the game to distract them to even ignore their children, friends or spouses. WoW holds a funny place for me. Personally I don't really know why I like the game so much and keep coming back. I have played other MMOs that I enjoyed the storyline of much more and so on. Yet for some reason I always find myself coming back to it. I recently took a month break from the game, yet not a day went by that I didn't think about playing again and of course finally gave in. I don't know what it is that Blizzard has managed to do with WoW, but there is something about the game that is so addictive. For as much as I loved other MMOs while I played them like EQ2, GW and such, none of them have ever had the hold on me that WoW constantly manages to maintain. I do believe that people need to practice moderation and self control. But I also know that sometimes that is easier said than done. In the end I really don't think it is a great conspiracy or anything. I just think that Blizzard has managed to make a game that while isn't anything truely special has the right balance of gaming elements and user controls to make it so easy to get into and play. Sorry for my rambling. -------------------------------- Looking forward to: Guild Wars 2 Quit: Eden Eternal, Wakfu, DDO, STO, DCUO, Sword 2, Atlantica Online, LOTRO, SWTOR, RIFT, Earthrise, FFXIV, RoM, Allods Online, GA,WAR,CO,V:SoH,POTBS,TR,COH/COV, WOW, DDO,AL, EQ, Eve, L2, AA, Mx0, SWG, SoR, AO, RFO, DAoC, and others. |

It's EverCrack with solo play, what's not to get addicted about? It's everything us EverQuest players with little free time have been asking for years. About the only real difference between WoW and EQ besides the ability to solo is that your char is limited to two tradeskills..that's kind of odd, but other than that I couldn't ask for anything more.
That's not to say that some other games arn't addictive though. The randomly generated missions in City of Villains and Anarchy Online are fantastic, but the leveling rate is too slow for my personal taste in CoV and Anarchy Online isn't my cup of tea. |

Someone tell me what there is to do besides raids after you hit 60 ? PvP = Raid gear required to comepete and win, Rep grind = boredom beyond belief for crappy rewards. How many times can you run UBRS, LBRS, DM, etc....untill you are bored out of your skull ? Yeah you don't have to raids but then if you aren't doing raids for gear to advance you character you might as well not play the game.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2. Game(s) I Am Currently Playing: GW2 (+LoL and BF3) |

Well isn't this the case for all MMOs after you reach level cap? I mean really what else is there in an MMO after level cap other than PvP, Rep grind, Gold Grind, and rading, and just hanging out with friends and waiting for the next expansion and level cap increase? As far as WoW gear to advance, if you don't raid you still can get decent PvP sets, but either way you are still going to have to spend crazy amount of time in order to keep up with the jones. In the end to me even though I continue to keep coming back to WoW, it is always an Arms Race to get the best gear. I have always hated that gear dependency. -------------------------------- Looking forward to: Guild Wars 2 Quit: Eden Eternal, Wakfu, DDO, STO, DCUO, Sword 2, Atlantica Online, LOTRO, SWTOR, RIFT, Earthrise, FFXIV, RoM, Allods Online, GA,WAR,CO,V:SoH,POTBS,TR,COH/COV, WOW, DDO,AL, EQ, Eve, L2, AA, Mx0, SWG, SoR, AO, RFO, DAoC, and others. |

It's amazing that grown adults realize when they have an online gaming problem, and can't find a way to quit.
Cancel your account, deinstall the game, then throw away your CDs. Problem solved.

Im not sure the OP meant "Addicted" literally. More like an exxageration, like me saying "Oh my God this is the best pizza in the world", or "That is just the worst". More of a figure of speech. Gotta add in though, lately my WoW playing has suffered from console games. Splinter Cell Double Agent, Justice League Heroes, and Phantasy Star Universe.(havent played online yet) Also rediscovered some old favorites like D&D Heroes and Prince of Persia:Sands of Time. Been having a ball with my dusty old X-Box again. He was so lonely..... "The touch is cold |

WoW addiction, is MMO addiction of the WORST kind. If you want a competitive character you are basically forced to raid 30+ hours a week during primetime. Mainly because of a terrible cycle, if you want to be in the leading guilds you will be required to attend the majority of raids. Raids are usually only ran during primetime due to the 40 man requirement. Additionaly raids take a minimum of 3 to 6hrs to complete. Its also difficult to get 40 solid players together. The gear dependency of the game, is what ruins the game for me. I was leader of the #2 guild on my server during the first year of the game, we had just beat the top boss, Nefarion at the time, I was pretty much fully geared tier 2, then Blizz announced they were going to release a patch with more higher gear, also they announced a future expansion was underway with more dungeons and a higher level cap. I knew at then, it was time to leave. I couldnt imagine spending that many hours again just to have good gear. I actually sold my account for $1200 and another $900 for the gold. $2100 for wasting my life for an entire year? Definetly not worth it. At least in DAOC you could get the good gear/levels/ML..., after that was out of the way, you could log in whenever you wanted and pvp for a few hours at your leisure. In UO (casual gamers paradise), you could log in anytime or very little and always feel like you were accomplishing something worthwhile. So many things you could do. Compete, Casual and WoW absolutely do not mix. Thier is no casual in WoW and still being able to do endgame content. You are either immersing your entire life into a video game, or you have to live with the fact that you wont be able to be in the guilds with highly skilled players. |
