A few years ago i was a very hardcore roleplayer, in the dice and paper way, along with my buddies. But then i grew up and the game lost charm. The same thing is happening to me about PC and console games. But thats not the point in this topic. What i want to ask is, have you ever roleplayed in a MMORPG? like "Hi i'm Sorak of the hill people and i defend the NPC's of this world"... i actually can't roleplay in a MMORPG, maybe because i don't have to use my imagination since i'm actually seeing the stuff, and 'cause i'm an old school roleplayer, i need to imagine the things so i can actually play the game. But that's just me, how about you? can or had roleplayed in a MMORPG? and if you have, why did you stop doing it?

Yep I have. Several times. Mostly in games with small communities. For some reason its easier there. Having an explicit chat channels really helps too. Though even then I had the terrible immersion-breaking habit of trying to climb on top of buildings... Its like I can't help myself. My characters are all like that crazy priest in Half Life 2.

UO, RPed an orc, guess what his name was. Gor' ukha :)
EQ, RPed an Ogre, BADLY. Gudbasher Every game ever since haven't RPed once. Unlike UO where you could actually defend npcs and RP with very little limits, the following EQ and its brood make it a point to squash any possibility of RPing and having your actions reflect that. I don't consider myself a role player but I have RPed :) |

I did roleplaying in NWN. It was a tad easier, since the PW i played on had lots of tools for the RPer to use(Enforced RP on the server), and there was always GMs for assistance. In MMORPGs, it ain't gonna happen.
But generally i dislike roleplaying over the PC. PnP is much easier, i like to use my imagination. |

When MMORPGs came out it seemed the ROLEPLAYING heaven was born.
Roleplayers from all the world swarmed early MMORPGS. Ultima online, Everquest. Then World of Warcraft landed on us and made MMORPG popular, really popular. And all other gamers came. Suddenly MMORPGs are played by majority of people that dont even know what roleplaying stands for. The truth is , and this is in the face of every other gamer (that doesnt know anthing about RP) Or everybody roleplays , or nobody roleplays. Forget everything else. In this way almost all the mmorpgs make roleplaying ridicilous and imersion impossible. In some way this could be compensated with some roleplaying guild interactivity. But it is just stupid. You want your roleplaying to affect the world you are playing in. And this is just not happening in MMORPGs of today... Well with few honorable exceptions 1. NWN and NWN2 - PW or persistant world servers are heaven for roleplayers. You should search for "Roleplaying Enforced" ones. There RP is mandatory. Who doesnt like it , gets kicked faster than you can say BAN. 2. Saga of Ryzom - The word is SoR is largely populated by roleplayers, and quite good ones aswell. 3. EvE online. - Eve is not roleplaying game and do not expect even 0.001% of roleplaying. But sandbox living universe makes you take active role and practically play/live your role with no need to pretend play...perhaps next step in roleplaying ? Again i strongly recomend buying and playing NWN2 when it comes out in two weeks time "Before this battle is over all the world will know that few...stood against many." - King Leonidas |

Yes, I have, I do, and I will in the future. I am first and foremost a roleplayer and in fact I see no reason to play any MMORPG (or pay their subscription fee) unless I'm going to be roleplaying. I can game with friends only, and NOT roleplay, without paying a dime in subscription fees (by playing games like Empire Earth II or Madden NFL with them online, neither of which are RPGs, and neither of which has a subs fee last I checked). And I am not alone... I am part of a roleplay-oriented guild, the Order of the Pen and Sword, which maintained a presence in several games, though for now we are down to a few in COH and the rest mostly waiting for something decent to come along. I am also a member of an RP-oriented guild in Saga of Ryzom (different guild). Everyone in these two guilds is a roleplayer in MMORPGs. C |

Totally agree with the "Everybody roleplays, or nobody does" comment. It requires a company and a community willing to rigorously enforce it. Only time I ever roleplayed and enjoyed it was in Seed. I actually got angry in a meeting and stormed out. Most of the time RP ends up being lame. But when it is good, it is really good.

To truely RP in an mmo you need the community for it as has already been pointed out.
I RP'ed in Seed as well and a part of that community has moved to other games to keep the roleplaying alive. It can be done, and enjoyed greatly, if there are enough people willing to do it. After having roleplayed in an mmo I really dont feel like playing online games without a roleplaying element to it anymore. I used to play PnP as well but I dont at the mo. Roleplaying online will most likely never be quite the same as PnP... but it can come pretty close. |

Wouldn't be cool if a game creates a roleplaying server? i might even return to my roleplaying days if that was the case, but it would have to be something like shadowbane, with open PvP so evil people can murder others, while the khights guild hunt them down and give protection to the carebears like myself. Maybe even a mafia type of guild could arise in that situation, that offers protection for a price. That would be awesome.

Back when SWG first started out, we didn't even need to put up RP tags. Everyone roleplayed. Even if you never intended to, or were lame, you ended up playing in character, and playing a role, without even realizing it. A person really had to work hard not to roleplay, since if you were a wookiee, you talked and made noises like a wookiee through the speakers, and you knew all about how wookiees act by watching the films. But this was in 2003, before TS and Vent really took off. When the people wouldn't chat in spatial anymore, or do emotes, then roleplaying pretty much died. Ain't nobody going to be fooled by the wookiee noises, when you have the sound off, and are speaking like a regular, 21st Century American through the speakers. __________________________ "...when it comes to pimping EVE I have little restraints." I've tried roleplaying in pretty much every game I've come aross. You
need others who are doing it, and it helps vastly if they can do it
well.
The reason why I'm not currently actively roleplaying is because finding that community in a game you want to play is hard. If a game will occupy you easily and pull you into doing whatever it will pull people away from interacting with each other and using their imagination and will push them towards the gameplay. |

I love to RP in MMOs but i never really RPed until WoW. Yes, WoW. This is when i really got into RPing but the community can really ruin the experience and makes it feel like crap. I just hate to see people with the name like "Iownu" and "Thekiller" on a RP server. If your lucky enough to find a heavy RP guild then that always works pretty nicely. I cant wait until NWN 2 to come out!

roleplaying in an MMORPG can be as simple as donning or fitting your toon into a personality and acting out in that personality ...
when i played star wars galaxies i was a bounty hunter .. back when we could only hunt jedi ... i donned a personality which was shady ... criminal .. and underworldish ... quiet but brazen ... with a very cynical sense of humor ... and it of course came natural because of the situations id find myself in being a bounty hunter ... when id hunt jedi id adopt gthe " feel" of it .. hiding in the shadows .. waiting to strike in an ambush ... playing off his friends for information on his whereabouts ... and when finally confronting him ... using insults and mind games to throw him off his concentration in order to win ... and the funny thing is .. you dont realize your roleplaying untill you think about it later ...because everyone who probably met me in game ... thought of me as bounty hunter scum ...

Never been the roleplaying type, but I don't understand how following a predeveloped lore or class structure could be considered genuine roleplaying. I always thought RPing was more about creating your own character, not living up to someone else's expectations.
What greater tribute to free will than the power to question the highest of authority? What greater display of loyalty than blind faith? What greater gift than free will? What greater love than loyalty? |

I try to RP in MMORPGs. I really do. I'm on a few WoW RP servers (they're the only reason I actually play). But I just can't stand it a lot of the time. Maybe it's because I developed my Role Playing style on Forums, but I just have a hard time in MMORPGs. Even when there is a nice storyline someone has running, there's no way for an outsider to get in. I even went as far as to install FlagRSP (RP AddOn) and set my status to Fulltime Roleplayer, Looking for contact.
I never once got in an RP situation unless I sort of intruded, and then it felt awkward. Then you have the trolls who hate RPing, people who break character all the time... it just ruins it. |
