Samhain's Zergwatch

Samhain's Zergwatch is a blog that started in 2006 on a different gaming community server and has since evolved into www.zergwatch.com, a place to gather my twisted thoughts on the whole mess. Explore the oozing underbelly of gaming with me.

Rigor Mortis sets in Age of Conan
Funcom today confirmed that they are cutting up to 70% of U.S. staff. Everything has gone downhill for a once promising MMORPG developer. It all started when players hit level 40 and realized the game was unfinished and imbalanced and on top of it all, a GM was fired for engaging in cybersex with a player. Shortly after, game director Gaute Godager quit the company. Age of Conan had recently announced server merges to compensate for a dwindling player base. The only question left unanswered was which game failed more? Age of Conan or Vanguard: Saga of Heroes?

MMORPG's coming to a candy store near you
SOE has signed a deal with Topps, the baseball card manufacturer to bring its Legends of Norrath style trading card game to supermarket shelves for its upcoming "kids" MMORPG, Free Realms. Every pack of cards will contain an in game loot card. Free Realms is a micro transaction based free to play MMORPG that will attempt to suck every nickel and dime out unsuspecting parents.

The Wii heals wounded soldiers
While this is not the typical story I would put in this blog, I'm a U.S.M.C. veteran and this story caught my eye. There is a non profit charity called Soldier's Angels which is trying to give away Wii systems to wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts to help them during rehabilitation. Let's hope they don't come included with any MOH games and send these guys into post traumatic stress syndrome. Either way, its a worthy cause.

You can now apply for a PS3 credit card and save $150 on a PS3 purchase. This might help Sony move a few dozen PS3's this holiday season.

Those crazy Chinese gamers
"Five people died on Sunday after a dispute at a video-game centre in south-western China escalated into a pitched battle involving at least 20 people, some armed with knives and batons, state media said on Monday. " Achievements for the fight will be awarded this afternoon.

Howcome lvl 40 is to decide that the game is not finished.

Secondly, no servers merged yet. Investigate the matter more before you write something again.

Thank you for pointing out my typo.  The line hasbeen changed to "have recently announced server merges".  In peforming due diligence, I had also neglected to include the GM cyber sex escapade, thanks for the heads up.

At level 40, at launch there was an unmistakable wall which most casual players hit, which was the begining of the end of the game for many.  This can be confirmed with their recent patch to introduce much needed 40-50 content.

Remember that I read about 250 articles per day and sometimes mistakes can happen.  No reason to go all  Warhammer Fanboy Nerd Rage about it.

Whether or not you agree, AoC is doomed for failure. Here is an interview I did with them at launch and then questions they refused to answer to get your Nerd Rage going again:
