The Daily Zerg - 11/28 - Hey, that's my gold bag

Welcome to the Daily Zerg, a snippet of video game news stories from zergwatch.com, a video game news syndication and mashup service. Each day, hundreds of RSS feeds from gaming websites around the world are catalogued and bookmarked. I pick a handful of what I think are the most interesting stories each day and give my 2 cents. Here is the Daily Zerg for Friday, November 28, 2008.

Warhammer woes
Anyone who has played Warhammer can tell you that your effort and contribution on Public Quests and RVR sieges in no way reflects your rewards. This week, media outlets started picking up on this, though the player base has had suspicions that your loot roll in the game was most likely an arbitrary process of some kind. Personally, I have been involved in many PQ's and RVR rolls where I afk'd my way through and came out with a gold bag. It's one of the reason I lost interest in the game, aside from the fact that Wrath of the Lich King had decimated server populations over night. While those who played War knew this all along, it has been this week's War soapbox message for the masses.

If a tree falls in the forest
If another European MMORPG launches, does anyone play it? Chronicles of Spellborn has launched today, but after many recent MMO failures, are there any players left willing to give yet another small market MMORPG a look, even if it might be somewhat deserving?

It's not SWG, I swear
7 new screenshots were released today on www.stor.com today, giving anxious Star Wars Galaxies refugee another sneak peak at the game they all hope can fill their void. The new screens are less than revealing and really don't give any further insight into the game itself. While the SWG homeless are praying for SWG 2, all indication so far points to an MMORPG that will be similar to the KOTOR RPG games.

A cure for the Red Ring of Death
It was reported today by Electronica that the Jasper based versions of the Xbox 360 promise to end the issues with the Red Ring of Death. The console has had an internal makeover that includes a motherboard redesign and a new graphics chip which improve the console's overall reliability. In the past, the console's graphics process has been burdened by overheating which caused other internal problems, eventually leading to the ultimate death of the console... the Red Ring of Death.

Today's Releases
Nothing worthwhile is being released today.

The daily zerg is a random collection of thoughts regarding a few headlines deemed interesting.. by me of course.  Keep up on the gaming zerg at www.zergwatch.com

The Guild Season Two
The MMORPG satire web show, The Guild returns for a second season with pretty much the same skits done over as the very first episode. I've never quite understood the fascination of watching a web show that mimics the real lives of gamers. It's bad enough to have to sit in ventrilo with these people, I really don't care to watch a low budget web show. Maybe you do. That's why its here.

World of Warcraft turns 4
This week, World of Warcraft turned 4. Four years ago, the MMORPG industry was changed forever. Changes embraced by millions and QQ'd over by a few hundred thousand. While it is unknown just how many MMORPG murders WoW has committed, many MMORPG failures over the past 4 years can be directly or at least indirectly attributed to WoW's success.

Information Week pwns Xbox360 kids
A typically low brow tech rag, Information Week, skidded off the rails to ridicule Microsoft's new "An Xbox 360 costs about as much as a family dinner out" campaign. On the site Microsoft lists XBox 360 starting as low as $199 and compares it to a $199 family dinner out. I'm not sure where the fuck Microsoft goes out to eat, or what the prices are like in Seattle, but a $199 dinner better come with a happy ending.

Sony films return to Netflix, 360.
Well, sort of. A portion of Sony's Columbia Pictures movies have returned to Netflix overnight, both sides are still staying mum as to what has caused this issue. It's widely assumed to be sour grapes on Sony's part, or some sort of licensing issue, but to the average Netflix customer, it's just a plain old shitty way to be treated by all involved.

Fallout 3 Editor
Yes, that's right, but only on PC. The Garden of Eden Creation Kit will allow users to build their own locations, characters and more in the PC version of Fallout 3.

PS3 Home coming today?
No, but Sony is pushing a patch that will finally include full screen support for Adobe Flash, something that has been a nuisance for PS3 owners since day 1. Most importantly though, will be a new power saving function to stop your controllers from draining the battery when you're not even using them.

WTF? The Shield Season Finale
Every now and then, I'll inject something that is completely unrelated, but my 2 cents need to be spent. If you are a fan of The Shield and have not seen the final episode, don't worry, there's no spoilers here. WTF? Shane committed suicide, killed his wife and his child, Vic got stuck on a desk job, Dutch implicated in a murder, Vic's family sent to witness protection, Ronnie gets arrested and it ends!?! While it was a great ending, it sucks that it ended.

Today's Releases
Nothing worth mentioning being released today.

The Daily Zerg - 11/25 - The Funcom ship has run out of life jackets, sinks deeper.

Rigor Mortis sets in Age of Conan
Funcom today confirmed that they are cutting up to 70% of U.S. staff. Everything has gone downhill for a once promising MMORPG developer. It all started when players hit level 40 and realized the game was unfinished and imbalanced and on top of it all, a GM was fired for engaging in cybersex with a player. Shortly after, game director Gaute Godager quit the company. Age of Conan had recently announced server merges to compensate for a dwindling player base. The only question left unanswered was which game failed more? Age of Conan or Vanguard: Saga of Heroes?

MMORPG's coming to a candy store near you
SOE has signed a deal with Topps, the baseball card manufacturer to bring its Legends of Norrath style trading card game to supermarket shelves for its upcoming "kids" MMORPG, Free Realms. Every pack of cards will contain an in game loot card. Free Realms is a micro transaction based free to play MMORPG that will attempt to suck every nickel and dime out unsuspecting parents.

The Wii heals wounded soldiers
While this is not the typical story I would put in this blog, I'm a U.S.M.C. veteran and this story caught my eye. There is a non profit charity called Soldier's Angels which is trying to give away Wii systems to wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts to help them during rehabilitation. Let's hope they don't come included with any MOH games and send these guys into post traumatic stress syndrome. Either way, its a worthy cause.

Save $150 on a PS3 with a PS3 credit card
You can now apply for a PS3 credit card and save $150 on a PS3 purchase. This might help Sony move a few dozen PS3's this holiday season.

Video games cause sex and violence

This year's hitlist of games to avoid include Blitz The League II, Dead Space, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead, Legendary, Resistance 2, Saints Row 2 and Silent Hill: Homecoming.

Those crazy Chinese gamers
"Five people died on Sunday after a dispute at a video-game centre in south-western China escalated into a pitched battle involving at least 20 people, some armed with knives and batons, state media said on Monday. " Achievements for the fight will be awarded this afternoon.

The Daily Zerg is my interpretation of the daily zerg of gaming articles that pass through Zergwatch.com each day.   Every Mon-Fri, I pick what I feel are the most entertaining reads and add my 2 cents (which is worth about .05 cents.    Enjoy and see more like it at www.zergwatch.com

Lost In Space
Shortly after his return from Space, Richard Garriott, creator of Ultima Online and executive at NC Soft announced that he has found a higher calling in life, announced his resignation from NC Soft, a seemingly failing MMORPG publisher plagued by a year that included layoffs and a dismal launch of Tabula Rasa. Last week, NC Soft announced that Tabula Rasa will be shut down, making it the second NC Soft MMORPG to fail in the United States. In July of 2007, the automotive MMORPG was shut down. In preparation for their next MMORPG failure, NCSoft is currently developing Aion: Tower of Eternity, another niche market MMORPG using the same Korean influence formula that has so often failed in front of an American audience.

Picking the holiday winner
The Nintendo Wii is out selling both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 this holiday season despite drastic measures by both Sony and Microsoft to make their consoles more wii-like. While Sony and Microsoft have been slashing prices and reinventing their systems. Both companies are feverishly working on Wii remote like controllers like the PS3 Waggle and the in development motion sensitive xbox 360 remote. While I wouldn't expect a product on the shelves this holiday season for either company, I also wouldn't expect sales figures to be impacted too much once they develop the perfect wii motes, to go along with their newly installed Mii systems.

More Nico on the 360
On February 17th, Rockstar Games will release the first of two new episodes of the XBox exclusive DLC for Grand Theft Auto IV entitled "The Lost and the Damned". The new update will include new vehicles, new weapons and new music, but it's just for the XBox 360. In a response to PS3 owners and future PC players, Rockstar Games says "WTF, buy a 360".

If you smoke pot in your car, leave your Xbox at home
Orange County Sherriff's officer jacks a black man's XBox 360. They pulled the man over because they smelled marijuana, but found no drugs. Instead, the officer took the man's Xbox 360 console and 8 games. The department later explained that there have been several Xbox360's stolen from houses in the area and since he was black, it must have been stolen. When the deputy's son was asked what he wanted for Christmas, he explaied "Daddy already told me Santa got me an Xbox 360 with 8 games."

ZOMG! God of War III
David Jaffe claims to have seen God of War III firsthand this past weekend.

David writes "ps. I saw GOD OF WAR III when I was in Santa Monica last week. I can and will not give away details. But I think it's ok for me to say two things: I thought GEARS OF WARS 2 looked about as good as a next-gen game could look....and that game is currently- and will probably remain- my game of the year. And hell, I think I actually get to vote on that kind of stuff in some circles :) And unless I get blown away by POP or something else I missed, GEARS 2 is the SHIT....this year. Dudes and dudettes, fucking WAIT till you see the amazing graphics...just fucking wait. And yes, Xbots, accuse me all you want of being a Sony fanboy. Just remember two things.. (blah blah blah)" The word "fuck" was also used 34 times on his blog page, which means it must have been a good game?

Today's releases
Age of Mytholyogy (DS)
Well, that's about it for today.  No point in explaining this one. It's AOM but smaller, more portable and not as good as the orginal

The Daily Zerg - 11/21 - Hoth: The Empire Strikes Out

Today is a short Zergwatch as I'm on the way to the hospital for the birth of my 2nd child, a boy. I couldn't let the gaming masses down today. ZOMG! it's cold out there today.

Five years later and three years too late
SOE this week released the Battle of Echo Base, a Star Wars Galaxies battleground themed after the famous battle on the planet Hoth from Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. When SWG was released rumors spread that Hoth was a planet already in the game, but disabled. Later rumors spread about a Hoth expansion. Now, only five years after the release of the game, it's finally here. This is great news for the 200 people still playing this game.  Unfortunately for SOE, the Empire Strikes Out as the expansion comes 1,295 days too late for many people to get excited over it.

It's either me or the game
The Mixed Martial Arts organization decided to drop John Fitch over Fitch's refusal to sign a lifetime contract for the use of his likeness in the upcoming MMA fighting game to be published by THQ. The game is a highly anticipated game for fighting fans and surely, none of them will notice John Fitch's absence.

City of Heroes coming to the Mac
Two extremely small niche communities rejoice as NC Soft announced City of Heroes is coming to the Mac. Once again, 200 people rejoice.

You better have trophies
Sony has confirmed that all new games being released for the PS3 in 2009 must support the trophy reward system in order to be published for use on the console system.

CTA strikes back at violent video games
Just a day after Grand Theft Auto ads made their appearance around the Chicago Transit Authority, the CTA decided today that any games that advocate mass murder, mob hits, car jackings, reckless driving and other violent video game behavior will no longer be acceptable for CTA advertising. This does not affect the GTA IV ads, but bans future games from being displayed on CTA advertising properties. Brucie, a resident of Liberty City said "Chicago's just not alpha like me and you, bro."
Today's Releases
There is nothing worthy of mentioning being released today. Lots of great games came out this week. It was an above average release week.

The Daily Zerg - 11/20 - Never been kissed by a girl

The Daily Zerg is my take on what I see daily on Zergwatch, a video game social bookmarking and media syndication website.  Each morning, I check the Zergwatch wires and pick the most appealing stories to give my semi-warped opinion on the whole mess.  I hope you enjoy today's installment.  Being a fan of MMO's, I try to include at least 1 MMORPG entry each day whenever possible.

Wrath of the Lich King is too easy
This is what the diehard power gamers are saying. You know, the ones who have spent every waking moment since Burning Crusade running end game raids until the pile of Mountain Dew cans and Doritoes has been declared an EPA superfund site.

Fortunately, for the normal gamer who does not live in mom's basement or those who still managed to keep their full time jobs, there is no worry. The content being cleared in Lich King by such guilds as the Nihilum and SK guilds can be considered feats by, as Triumph the Wonder Dog says, super nerds. We tried to get an interview with guild leaders from those guilds, but they were busy wondering what to do with their lives now that they have beaten the game. When asked for comments by their spouses, their moms informed us "They don't see girls that often".

Nico Bellic spotted in Chicago bus terminals
The Chicago Transit Authority pulled Grand Theft Auto signs from their buses and stations, resulting in a lawsuit filed by Rockstar Games against the CTA after a Fox news report spread fears that would be 15 year old Nico impersonators would be running around the streets jackin' homies for their stash and running over innocent civilians in stolen Escalades and Hummers. When reason finally took hold, the ads were once again shown across the city. Rockstar Games paid approximately $300,000 for those ads and didn't want to miss the opportunity to sell more copies of Grand Theft Auto IV to inner city youths.

GTA IV DLC, entitled "Lost and Damned" should be available in February.

Lively turns deadly
Google's Second Life clone, Lively, which most people probably never even heard of for obvious reasons has announced it will be shutting down at the end of this year. In a statement to beta testers who have created lavish productions within the game, Google said "It's done. We failed. GTFO!".
http://www.lively.com/html/landing.html

Where in the world is Playstation Home?
While console makers compete to make a better Mii system, Xbox New Experience went live this week, but we have not heard anything new from the folks at Sony regarding Playstation 3. While there was a rumor that the project would go live November 20th, it doesn't appear to be true. Today is the 20th. According to the official Home forums, the anticipated release date is some time in December of 2008. It wouldn't be the first time Home was delayed, if not.

Don't do a full install of Halo 3
According to Bungie Chief Caching Officer Mat Noguchi, it is not wise to do a full install of Halo 3 to your XBox 360 hard drive. While most gaming journalists try to decipher comments made by Mat, we're trying to figure out what the hell a Chief Caching Officer really is.

An ironic twist
Sony, a pioneer and champion of copy protection schemes to protect their rights has now been sued a second time for pirating technology. First, they lost the lawsuit for stealing the dualshock shaking technology from Immersion Corporation, costing them a mere $90 million. This week, they lost their infringement lawsuit to Agere Systems and now has to shell out $18.5 million to the company for hijacking algorithms for storing music headers on storage chips.

Majesco to PETA "You're retarded"
Cooking Mama, who was the latest victim of a ruthless and unprovoked assault by PETA spoke to the media today. "I would never put rat in my Ratatouille," said a feisty Mama while beating some eggs. "Like any accomplished cook, I create my recipes to appeal to a broad range of tastes and preferences. My only goal is to ensure you leave the table well fed."

The new Cooking Mama World contains over 25 vegetarian recipes, slammed by PETA for it's meat filled yummies, does in fact cater to the vegetarians of the world, no matter how wacko and extreme they may be. Calls to PETA went un returned as they are on their "Kill A Turkey in Preschool" program, aimed at education 3-5 year olds about the horrors associated with Thanksgiving Day feasts.

The Last Remnant (360)

People used these objects for their awesome powers ? a choice that eventually began to cause a rift in the world's balance. Equality was replaced by those who ruled and those who were ruled over. War was inevitable. A thousand years later is when this story begins...

New XBox 360 Experience goes live
The much heralded XBox New Experience goes live today. While Microsoft touts the NXE as rivaling the invention of the television and as a new era in home entertainment. In reality, as is customary with Microsoft, they have just taken what was available on the market and put it into one package. While convenient and creative, copying the Nintendo Mii system is not what one would call a new era.

No Sony movies on XBox 360 Netflix
Netflix subscribers eager to watch movies after the New Xbox Experience update were disappointed to find that they cannot watch movies from Columbia Pictures, a Sony Pictures Entertainment subsidiary. Is this an evil plot by Sony to throw a wrench into the NXE or a simple case of contractual misunderstandings.

Netflix Vice President Steve Swasey explains "As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices. We're doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal. Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time. In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console. Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers' computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they'll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly."

Chronicles of Spellborn beta and release date
The somewhat mildly anticipated MMORPG The Chronicles of Spellborn has announced beta testing will begin November 27th and the game will be released to the public in January with a paid subscription model offering low level gameplay for free. Players who want to journey outside the starter areas will have to subscribe. In other news... 12 million people play World of Warcraft.

While we're talking about World of Warcraft. again. and again.
The UK's The Independent published an interesting article about the violence in World of Warcraft. It's a somewhat scary yet strange insight into what makes World of Warcraft players tick. Did we mention? 12 million people play World of Warcraft?
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/features/is-world-of-warcraft-just-mindless-violence-1024311.html

Look! Mo' MMO's!
Cryptic Studios, creator of City of Heroes, Star Trek Online and Champions Online says they want to take MMORPG's to the PS3 in a bid to match rival SOE's console ambitions. To date, the only MMORPG's to have had any success on console platforms was SOE's Everquest Online Adventures and Square Enix's Final Fantasy MMORPG.

Looking out for #1
There was a time when MMORPG publisher would delay product updates, expansions and even new games as to not compete head on with World of Warcraft. Times have changed. Both EA Mythic and Turbine have made head to head challenges against Blizzard by releasing expansions and critical updates in the face of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Turbine released its Mines of Moria expansion only days after Lich King and EA Mythic announced its first major update and game event in the wake of a community exodus back to Azeroth. It is highly unlikely that either of these direct challenges will succeed.

If you cook a cat in a microwave, you can't play video games
Unless of course, you have your parent's permission. A judge in Edmonton, that's in Canada btw, sentenced two teens to a video game ban. It also stipulates that in order to play video games they have to have their parent's permission. "Nobody knows why these young men did what they did," said Crown prosecutor John Laluk, so yes, it must have been video games and not their 80's coke snorting hippie wanna be parent's lack of parenting skills.

Mugshot Slots anger former victims
In an effort to help catch alleged criminals in Japan, Famista, Inc. is releasing a video game that shows mug shots of Japan's most wanted. This doesn't sit to well with victim's families who claim that a commercial property is being established which capitalizes on the victims of crimes.

Street Fighter, a legend in the arcade and the living room returns in an all new 3D release expected in February. In this installment, Street Fighter goes 3D with the original cast on console platforms only.

Another player pulls up a chair at the MMORPG table
Ubisoft has announced a plan to slowly ease themselves into the MMORPG market, potentially with a Tom Clancy themed project. Even in the face of failure after failure in the MMORPG market, Ubisoft feels there is room for yet another in the space. These days, unless your game is set in an Orc vs. Human aligned world with PVE character progression and the name "World of Warcraft" in the title, it appears your game is doomed to never break the 1,000,000 subscriber mark.

D-Day minus one
Tomorrow, Microsoft will roll out its New Xbox 360 Experience, a move similar to a previous New Game Experience, that of Sony's Star Wars Galaxies MMORPG back in 2005. Like SOE, Microsoft has decided that the Xbox 360 needs to reinvent itself from the ground floor. How will this New Experience be received by millions of gamers has yet to be determined, but its doubtful that people will stop playing their XBox and start playing World of Warcraft because of the move.

Netflix on the Xbox 360
In a move that goes unnoticed to most Xbox 360 users Netflix services will be available on the console tomorrow. For fans of Netflix, this is a huge addition to home theater experience as the Netflix online catalog includes over 12,000 titles including movies, television shows and hard to find anime and classic television making the XBox 360 a bit more attractive to middle America looking for a gaming / home entertainment system over the PS3 and its Blu-Ray.

Playstation 3 & Blu-Ray bundle at Amazon
Amazon.Com is now offering a PS3 bundle which includes a new 160GB PS3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, PAIN download voucer and a Dualshock 3 controller for $499. Other retailers followed suit including Target, offering a $40 gift card when you purchase the 80GB PS3.

Going completely unoticed
Lord of the Rings Online has just released a new expansion, The Mines of Moria while in Mines of Moria, it's basically the same as the original, except this time it all happens underground. Unfortunately, most MMORPG players don't care as Wrath of the Lich King also promises more of the same except that it has 12,000,000 addicts worldwide.

PETA enters the video game market
PETA today announced their new game, Cooking Mama Mama Kills Animals. While the game is intended to warn us against the evils of the Thanksgiving experience, it's damn funny. In fact, this is one of the best web games we have seen to date and we hope it pushes the envelope on browser based video game violence. This game gets a 10/10 from Zergwatch. While PETA urges you to contact Majesco, creator of Cooking Mama to ask them for vegetarian recipes, I don't think you'll be seeing Cooking Mama: Look Ma, No Meat! anytime soon.

Boy collapses after playing Lich King for 24 hours
"A schoolboy collapsed and went into convulsions after playing a new version of the World of Warcraft computer game for 24 hours straight." according to the Times Online, a UK media service.

While WoW addiction is nothing new, admitting you had to be rushed to the hospital because of your WoW addiction is pretty rare.

Battlefield Heroes a no go for 2009
EA Dice pushes the release date of its upcoming Play 4 Free release to 2009. The game had a beta and May and while EA promised users a Q4 2009 launch, but instead the beta was taken off line and EA returns to the drawing board. Perhaps a free to play game is not the right business strategy at this point, considering our economy.

PS3 Turns 2
The Playstation 3 console turns 2 today, however during these two years, we have lost track of how many times Sony performed makeovers on the console in an effort to dig itself out of the number three spot in the console market. At this time two years ago, the PS3 could be found on Ebay for over $2,000. Today, you can find used units for as low as $150.00. So if you were one of the people who bought a $2,000 PS3, you still made a better investment than if you bought GM stock instead.

The Xbox Experience turns your Xbox in to a Wii
To compete with the Wii this holiday season, Microsoft announced price cuts and Mii's for their gaming console. On Wednesday, your XBox 360 will become Wii 360 as the competition to cut and paste what works for your competitors is taken to new levels.

Wii Music flops
After 11 days, Wii Music sold just under 81,000 copies compared to 700,000 boxes sold by Wii Fit in its first 11 days. While the concept seems kind of neat and the title might be revivable with Rock Band type accessories, I think anyone who wants to be a virtual rock star is already on board the Rock Band train.

Miley Cyrus dies again
While this is not video game related, Miley Cyrus' YouTube page was 'hacked' once again, this time the video posted depicted Miley's alleged death at the hands of a drunk driver. Just something interesting to Google while you're at work. If this doesn't inspire you to buy a Hannah Montana game, I'm not sure what would.

When the going gets tough, the tough play video games
An NPD report states that the video game industry experienced an 18% overall increase in 2008, while the stock market has dropped nearly 30% during the same periods. During hard economic times, it is natural for "comfort" items to surge in popularity as things such as vacations, new cars and lavish luxuries become a thing of the past. While most admit that the industry is not 100% recession proof, the console market is one of the few U.S. industry to experience growth in 2008.

Has Blizzard KO'd EA Mythic?
Seemingly overnight, Warhammer Online server populations were hovering at the low to medium mark, not even 24 hours after Wrath of the Lich King has been released. Warhammer's RVR zones seemed like ghost towns and scenarios had queues up to 20 minutes, when just hours before Lich King's release, queues were in the single minutes. This drop was evident across the board as those who have freed themselves of Warcraft's changes, seemingly flocked back to the game in bulk.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles rumors shot down
Square Enix has stated that rumors spreading about the cancellation of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles are just indeed rumors. While they never usually comment on such rumors, this one seemed to have spun far out of control and the company issued the statement to put to ease any fears of cancellation.

Athene gets banned
The self proclaimed greatest World of Warcraft Paladin gets banned once again from the game, this time for allegedly exploiting in Wrath of the Lich King. Made popular by the WoW subculture for his ability to power level World of Warcraft characters, his website claims "World first level 80", however his recently published YouTube video shows that he got banned at level 79, so the race for first World of Warcraft level 80 is still up for grabs.

Cheaters never win
Microsoft announced yesterday that Xbox 360 console owners who have modified their system will no longer be able to connect to the Xbox Live Servers. This is just one step in Microsoft's strategy to combat software piracy.
